I sat down recently with the fall TV season’s biggest breakout star Jane Lynch — who plays beastly cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on Glee — to talk about what makes a deliciously heinous character. (Lynch’s Sue, naturally, made our list of Best TV Bitches in EW’s Nov. 20 issue, along with Ugly Betty’s Vanessa Williams, 90210’s AnnaLynne McCord, and The Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder, among others.) Apparently, you take a little bit of inspiration from Oscar nominees Eve Arden and Eileen Brennan, add a dash of horse estrogen, and throw in a little bit of philosophy from Twitter. (Speaking of Twitter, follow me at @EWMichaelSlezak!) I’d say more, but why not let Lynch tell you herself. Press play below, then perhaps you might like to start the inevitable Emmy nomination campaign in the comments section below. (Related: Jane Lynch aces Tonight Show; your move, Lorne.)

Slezak, you rule. Quit teasing and give us the whole interview!
Yes, she is the best on “Glee.” But she is wonderful (with Meryl Streep) in “Julie and Julia.” We are talking Oscar-worthy. Now if they will only make a “buddy movie” with Meryl and Jane. Truly supreme.
Lynch will surely be dealing with an Oscar campaign for her contribution in “J&J” long before Emmy season ( as such ) comes down the pike…which will increase the drumbeat for her inevitable emmy nom….Brava…
BTW Kimberlin Brown was a master of the “raised eyebrow” when she played Sheila Carter on the soaps B & B/Y &R
So true…no one has ever been a villian like Kimberlin Brown…Sheila was a classic!!!
Did you see Eva Longoria when she was on Y&R ? She was a great too.
Jane Lynch is a comic genius. I think I’ve seen every movie she’s been in, and every character she creates is a marvel of twisted complexity. Hated that she wasn’t in this week’s “Glee.”
Actually, it shows the strength of the show that my favorite character was not on and I STILL loved it. It’ll be good to have her back next week though.
“Punched a man in the soul.” I love it. Remember that day that #suesylvester actually trended? That was a pretty great day.
Get ready to give her the golden globes, SAG, emmy etc. She is the best!!!
Yes let’s get started on the Golden Globes-they tend to reward new shows faster than the Emmys and it’s only a few months away.
Lynch is a good actress but I didn’t miss her in tonight’s episode. In fact, I forgot she wasn’t in it until I read these posts.
The show is better when it concentrates on the kids and not the adults. They have to get rid of Terri and her fake pregnancy, too.
I agree, the whole fake pregnancy thing is awful. Detracts from how good the rest of it is.
Has this show won its Peabody yet?
With the pregnancy storyline? It doesn’t deserve one.
OMG Sue has thee best lines ever!!! i have no idea how the cast can keep a straight face when she’s around … i think they should give her the Emmy already
Did they hold this interview in a bathroom?
I hope Sue Sylvester will sing “Poor unfortunate souls”. It suits her perfectly!
LOL! Love it! I can almost hear her singing it! Great idea! Call Fox, Michka!
I love Sue….She makes Glee!!! But she is good in every part she does
Love Jane Lynch…but I gotta totally off topic questions. Does anyone else get the feeling that they are setting up Quinn for a “Papa Don’t Preach” song? Or am I just wishfully hoping and thinking?
Actually saw an interview with Dianna Agron (plays Quinn). She said they had already filmed her singing that song – before the all-Madonna episode! Can’t wait, it’s perfect for the character.
Would love to see Sue and Willie have a crossover!
The only reason I started watching Glee was Jane Lynch, and the main reason I stay is for Sue’s lines. Some of the dialogue is so bad I have to leave the room to heave, but Sue can do no wrong. “Ginger Pygmy” made me rewind at least 3 times.
…with bush baby eyes”!! LOL
