'New Super Mario Bros. Wii' review: Saving the princess is somehow still fun

Despite its ungainly title, there really isn’t anything all that “new” to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the umpteenth entry in Nintendo’s vast Mario empire. Read the full post.

why haven’t they done something new with the Super Mario 2 storyline? i’ve asked myself this over and over for years.

Because SMB2 was am entirely different game starring a completely different set of characters that was redesigned for the US.

Super Mario 2 was kind of a quick release deal to satisfy demand after the success of the original. I heard that they took a Japanese videogame, unrelated to the Marioverse, and changed the avatars to match the world of Mario. That’s why they haven’t followed up on it.

HISTORY TIME!!! The Original Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan was identical in terms of artwork and gameplay to the original Super Mario Bros. What Nintendo did was they took one of their protoype games called Doki Doki Panic and replaced the main character of the game with Mario and firends but left the villains and story intact. They renamed Doki Doki Panic, Super Mario Bros. 2 and released in America. In Japan that version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was named Super Mario USA. To this day villains like the Shyguys and game mechanics like carrying and throwing the Koopa Troopas came from Doki Doki Panic are now part of the Mario Universe. The Original Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 went on to become Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels when released here in America. :)

I loved SMB2. The “indoor” music rocked.

Mario is the best videogame and one of the few I still play from time to time… But I know I will never have a wii so I’m sure that I will never be able to play with this new version…

After playing the new super mario bros. Wii you shall be buying a Wii. Plus they are only $199, I know you are not part of the dumb buy only America xbox clowns; because gates really does not care about us. I can see a lot of us are in our late twenties and early thirties here. Great times are back people.

First to answer your question Adam B Vary, Robot Chicken already answered your Grand Theft Auto question in a episode a couple of years back. It did not end well for Mario and Luigi, and poor Yoshi ended up in Racoon City at the end of the short and that did end pretty for the dino either. Super Mario RPG, a joint collaboration with SquareSoft at the time, was an awesome game, wishes they put Geno in Smash Bros. And Bowser has 8 children, Larry, Morton Koopa Jr., Wendy O., Iggy, Ludwig Von, Lemmy, Roy, Baby Bowser. Wish they introduce us to Mrs. Koopa.

Thank you for using the word embiggen in your review. It’s a perfectly cromulent word you know.

    • Daniel Fidler

NJ, you *just* beat me to the punch. I was gonna comment on this! :)

      Hi-fives to both of you!!

Heh? Sounds like a semi-glowing review! People need to stop being afraid of giving out 9′s and A’s.

    • azul120

If only it were for something more legit than a purported “lack of innovation”. Jeremy Parish’s 1up review may have been one of those A+ reviews, but it actually broke down the game and its merits in respectable detail.

Sooo excited to play this; I recently broke out the old school NES and played through Super Mario 3, & I don’t mind if they don’t change the formula much. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it!

  • Tony

I want to see a revisit of the Mario 2 universe in a Galaxy/Sunshine style game. I’m really excited for this game. My wife and I are renting it (and Rabbids Go Home) tonight.

I think this will also appeal to people who don’t like video games (me), yet are subjected to watching video games because of spouse and/or friends. The last time I played a game and had any fun was back in the day with Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World. The “3D” stuff never interested me. I want mindless and routine, like in the old days. I don’t want to solve mysteries or go around shooting people. I’d rather watch a movie.

    Multiplayer is SO frustrating!!

    • Courtney

Agree! My kiddo insists on playing multi-player on this one and then proceeds to jump on my character all the time or lag behind…..I usually end up dying trying to get her to move along.

      • Mandy

Play with someone your age or your skill level. My boyfriend and I play multiplayer and it’s so much fun!

If someone falls down or is lagging behind, get them to press A to bubble up to you.

    • Lauren

I love playing the multiplayer with my boyfriend, but I died 10x more playing with him than on my own lol I definitely started getting ?!?!?! after a while. I had been doing great on my own! But it’s a great game so far – I am so glad they released another just like the old faves!

    Nice use of “embiggens”.

A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.

  • Funback Joe

So embiggen is now a word??

    Good ol’ Simpsons….
