Score one for Nickelodeon in its unspoken kiddie-programming arms race with the Disney Channel: The network has signed High School Musical writer Peter Barsocchini to make a half-hour comedy pilot about summer camp. No word on whom they’ll cast yet, though the offspring or sibling of a famous person is always a good bet. Barsocchini will likely be zipping up his writing a little for the slightly edgier net (we’re talking more tolerance of pop culture references and passing references to puberty here, not The Sopranos). And I’m guessing he won’t be bringing his penchant for incorporating musical numbers to this project, lest Nickelodeon end up with a half-hour rip-off of the Jonas Brothers’ hit TV movie Camp Rock. (Then again, maybe that’s exactly the idea here.) At any rate, it almost doesn’t matter whom they cast or what the show’s like, as it’s a big enough coup for the Slime Network just to lure the guy who wrote the movie series that served as Disney’s official cash machine the last few years.
What do you think of this idea, PopWatchers? Will you tune in to see what the High School Musical writer can do in a sitcom on Nickelodeon? Whom should the network cast? Should there be singing and dancing at camp?

So they’re re-doing Salute Your Shorts?
I was about to say the same thing…
There’s nothing new about Nickelodeon ripping off Disney ideas. They’ve been doing it for years. Unfortunately they are never as good as the Disney version. I won’t be watching it.
Ditto. High School Musical and Camp Rock were good but not great. Certainly not good enough for me to watch remakes.
Nickelodeon=better than Disney! well at least for tv shows… Zoey 101 was at least watchable unlike Hannah Montana!
No way! Disney has better talent. Nick always has lesser writing, worse talent…they just wrap it in fart jokes and people think that makes it cooler and edgier.
did they not already make a musical summer camp movie called CAMP.
I remember listening to the dialogue in “High School Musical” and thinking to myself, “That writer is going to move on to bigger and better things…like Nickelodeon.”
Talk about rerun! Of course, maybe it will be a mix of “Hey, Dude” and “Salute Your Shorts” ie Teenagers working during the Summer at a pre-teen Summer Camp. Sad to see remakes, even if I loved those shows when I was a kid.
I’m going to guess the camp owner/director is the bad guy, some boy character causes trouble, and the hot and popular girl will see the meaning of friendship (in more than one episode)via the main goody girl character. How original!
NOTHING will EVER be as good as Hey Dude and Salute Your Shorts! They need to get it right or pay the price
I LOVED Hey Dude! I can’t believe anyone else remembers that one! It’s the show that brought us Christine Taylor!
Totally thought the same thing about Salute Your Shorts.. they should just bring that show back.. it was so good!
As soon as people started talking about Salute Your Shorts, I began to giggle incessantly and now I’ve forgotten what this post is about.
