'Dancing With the Stars': Who's going home, and why hasn't season 9 been more ridiculous?

dwts-final4_l

As I mentally prepare for tonight’s penultimate performance episode of the 100,000th season of Dancing With the Stars, I can’t help but feel a bit underwhelmed. Sure, the flu bug that loves to infiltrate spray-tanned bodies did heighten the drama for some weeks, the costumes were as garish/awesome as ever, and Samantha Harris has hit every jewel tone in Aladdin’s cave, but the season has been lacking in important areas. I’ve narrowed it down to three: 1. Over-the-top desperation of Stars; 2. WOW! performances and/or total wipeouts; 3. Colossally inappropriate song/dance combos. We’ve seen some evidence of each (especially 3.), but now that Aaron Carter’s gone, Donny Osmond, Mya, Kelly Osbourne, and Joanna Krupa really need to ramp it up tonight. I have faith in Lord Mirrorballus that it’ll happen, especially since tonight is typically the episode in which Len Goodman’s DANCMSTR vanity plate makes its once-a-season appearance.

How would you rank season 9 on a scale of Merely Ridiculous (1) to Perfect 10 Stuffed Shells With Ridiculata Cheese (10)? I’d call it about a 3 or 4, or “mild pesto gouda.” Also, vote below for who will go home, and come back for my recap tomorrow morning or DANCMSTR will have his assistant have his limo driver take you out.

The show is not as enjoyable because it has become over produced. The judges have manipulated the scores to favor certain couples and the packages are presented to make some look bad. They brought in raunchy dances which Derek made indecent. The show has lost its charm and is no longer entertaining.

    • brandon

      agreed

    • Joanne

You are spot on. They’ve gotten too heavy handed in their manipulation.

    • Shiny

I agree, Debi. It also seems that, perhaps in seeking to keep our attention, they’ve added too many gimmicks. With new dances, add-an-era, teams, groups, dance-offs, and who knows what all, it feels like the show has gotten cluttered. Also, I cannot say how much I have been disgusted by Derek’s manhandling of his partner. I’d love to see less “stuff” and more class next season.

  • Doug

I want Kelly to win! I barely watch the show, but she was fantastic on Life As We Know It. Irrational reasoning, ftw!

  • Taya

I want Kelly to stay cause I loooveee Louis. :)

  • BOB

I will just say this…a better poll question might be “Does anyone really care who will win this season?” The fact is none of the four are great dancers and technically the worst (Donny) will end up with the win. Good for the Osmond ego but very nad for the show. So, of these four who is the best dancer going into the semuis? ans: they all stink in their own way. Will wait until next season and hope that they will be able to recruit actual celebrities with at least one talented star.

    • elr

Keep on wishing, but it won’t happen.

    • kell

i dont really agree with that statement. But thanks for your opinnon. i don’t really like the comments from the judges especially Bruno. Also Derek and Joanna their dancing! Not approiate. And to show the Playboy!Wow

  • Bobby

I wish they would all go home and never come back, what a horrible, horrible show.

  • Peggy

I don’t know if the judges are not as free with the 10’s or if the dancers just aren’t as good as in past years, but I think it’s interesting there has only been one 30 this year and it was just last week. There haven’t been any real characters this year (Cloris Leachman, anyone?) and that may be another reason it’s kind of boring this season.

  • Matt2

Aaron Carter, like Mya, had a target on his back all season. After the one-two punch of Mya and Donny he definitely belonged in that third spot. That would have been a phenomenal finale. Instead we end up with the possibility of at least one slacker in the mix. It’s a shame the judges and producers of such a wonderful show would deliberately set out to ruin a fantastic season. What happened to common sense judgment? ABC should put their foot in the a$$es of the producers and judges next season and say get your sh… together. But yeah definitely voting for Mya and/or Donny tonight!

  • DVaRmy

as far as least technique, Joanna should go home. She is with Derek and he is very popular, but I would be fine seeing her fake tan [amongst other fake things] to go home, really all she does is follow Derek while he forces her around the floor.

    • Joan

I agree. I do think that the producers have already picked them as the winners. I would like to see Kelly win.

      • jen

Why? Because she cries at every opportunity?

  • Tess

I think the show could use a break from Derek and Mark. Tired of them both.

    • Lin

      A-freakin’-men!

    • EJ

Me too. I thought Derek was annoying last year – this year he’s even worse. Mya did the best last night, but I don’t think she will win. It will probably be Donny – he has the biggest fan base.

  • Mothra

It is kinda boring this year, not much controversy in the lunch room. No passionate debates, just a lot of “Meh”.

I like Kelly and I don’t really know why. DON’T like Joanna, she’s so obviously a teacher’s pet, only good from the navel up… Donny’s like a train wreck of cheese: you can’t stop watching him but you sort of hate yourself for doing it. Any Mya, well, the girl can dance, but watching her do so is like watching paint dry. Hope the next edition is more fun!

    • Jenn67

Mothra, you hit the proverbial nail on the head with every one of your observations. I agree wholeheartedly.

    • jenna

I disagree about Joanna being the teachers pet, Kelly has been babied the most throughout the show, mostly by Carrie Ann. First she danced to one of her dads songs, then it was her bday and tonight her dog died. she still isnt that great a dancer. Mya is the best

  • APRIL GOSA

    KELLY WIN

  • traci

I agree that there haven’t been any “WOW” dances, but it is nice not to have one person that is a sure thing. I’m glad there hasn’t been as much drama manufactured by the producers. I just think none of the four have a big personality, but I still enjoy the show. But they need to get back to the basics the way it was a few seasons ago, before they tried to hype every little thing.

  • Mary 2

I hope Joanna doesn’t win. She has been favored so much this season, when she actually is not all that great. It has been ridiculous how the judges have fawned all over her. I don’t get it. ABC had her on their stars/sports show this summer, and she was totally unlikeable and obnoxious.

  • watson

One problem is that by now the professional dancers are more famous than the so-called “stars.” There’s not a lot of fun in watching someone you’ve barely heard of learning something new.

  • gus

i agree with you debi. this season is so overproduced and manipulated. joanna is so overrated and is staying so long on the show because of derek. i think that the producers need to get back to the original roots of the show. that’s what made the show popular in the first place.

  • Lisa

I have taken DWTS off my DVR. I found myself watching 20 seconds of each dance then seeing the scores. 3 hours a week is just much and they’ve brought in too many new dances. Way too much filler.

  • Mr. James

Who’s going home? I wish that Samantha Harris would! Does the show really need her?

    • DVaRmy

she is still better then when they had Lisa Renna fill in…that was horrendous!

      • Anthony

Samantha is useless. I’ll give you that. But Lisa Canning who co-hosted season one before Samatha was the worst. Watching her was like watching old people eat. Thank goodness they kicked that inane drone to the curb after 1 season.

    • Dee

I also could do without Samantha Harris. I actually thought that Drew Lachey did the best job when Samantha was on maternity leave. Who says they can’t have two male cohosts?

      • Agree

Drew Lachey was charming, actually listened to the dancers answers and was able to ask questions off the cuff….I say bring him back pronto

  • marie greene

I think Mya is technically the best dancer, but still lacks any personality, and I odn’t think dmitry choreographs her very well. kelly is adorable, but technically not as strong. Joanna is only still in it because Derek is so popular and a master of choreography and a great lead. I actually think kelly is better technically than Joanna and has tons more charisma. Donny’s expertise is somewhere in the middle, but the man has got personality. I predict it will be Mya and Donny in the finals and with Donny’s fan base, I think he will win.

    • jen

Even though I think Mya is hands down the best dancer, I could deal with her and donny in the finals. Any one but Kelly.

  • seattle_girl

Such a blah season. I always have found someone to root for that’s fun to watch and gets me invested. Not this year. I hit the point several weeks ago where I can only pick who I desperately want to go home (**Joanna**) rather than who I want to stay. Sigh, I need another Apolo Ohno….badly.

  • Dee

I agree that this season really doesn’t have any big surprise like the years Drew Lachey and Emmitt Smith evolved and turned out to be really good dancers. The last few seasons have really disappointed because of the best dancer being sent home too early and someone more popular winning. Gilles Marini soooo should have won last season!! Don’t like some of the new dances. I also agree that some of the professional dancers are more popular than the stars and people may be voting more for them than the celebrities. And some of the professional dancers are much better at showcasing the strengths of their partners than others. I think in some cases, stars that may have great potential never get the chance to develop simply because they are at the mercy of who they are paired with. And I did not like the dance off. Why bother to have us vote at all if the judges get to make the final decision? Mark Dacascos really got a raw deal this season. They saved Aaron at Mark’s expense and I knew that Aaron would just get voted off the next week as the fans did not make any secret of how they felt about Aaron and Karina from the beginning of the season.

  • pt

I don’t know. I am gonna go w/Mya. Can’t stand Joanna. Kelly has grown on me. Donny is wellllll …. Donny.

We mainly watch anymore for the pros. Can’t deal with Derek anymore. He annoys the crap out of me. Never liked Karina. She would be the “Slut” of the show I say.

    • Lorie

YES, Donny is,.. Donny!! No other like him, a well rounded, great person. Go Donny

  • kate

Wow, people – I think you should quit watching. It sounds like it only makes you miserable. Personally I enjoy my cheesefest each week and don’t really worry about who wins, since I can’t vote, being in Canada.

    • bmore

Hallelujah! I agree. What a lot of negativity. I enjoy the heck out of this show. Everyone is being WAY too critical. It is Completely Entertaining! Now…I need to go re-watch the show a couple times. Makes you wonder who the heck the millions of votes are being cast by…based on the nay sayers here no one should be watching.

    • kazou

Kate, I don’t understand this mentality chastizing people with legitimate criticisms and stating they should just quit watching. Should I move out of country if I have legitimate criticisms about our government? I think the people who criticize do so because they LOVE the show and want better for it. And for a lot of us the single-most aggravating thing on the show is that the judges try to manipulate us so blatantly (and so dishonestly). It’s unnecessary and breeds resentment. I still enjoy the show and love all the pros and most of the contestants. But yeah, I get angry when the judges don’t mark each contestants with the same criteria (within their appropriate skill level, of course) and worse, tweak the scores to counteract the audience vote. That, more than the star personalities, is why the show is having problems this year.

    • Pat

I stopped long ago taking this show too seriously. The wrong couple usually wins because the viewers vote for reasons other than good and true dancing. Kelly should have been eliminated weeks ago, but many people enjoy grown women who behave like little girls — even the judges have been treating her like an emotional fragile child. Mya should win because she is the best dancer.

      • jen

It should absolutely be just about dancing. Not about this one thinks she’s cute, that one is bossy, that dress was obscene…etc.

  • Grant

Wow, I agree with Kate, sounds like the majority of people watching are getting upset and or miserable. Just watch it for watching sake and enjoy it for what it is… or change the channel. I wonder how many of the persons writing in call and vote. Each contestant has more guts than me… I would never do what they try to do every week… in front of millions.

  • kazou

It’s sad when my voting strategy is simply to try an makes sure Joanna or Mya doesn’t win. Joanna is just downright unlikeable and Mya, although lovely is the nearest thing to a professional dancer this show has ever cast (admittedly they’ve come close before but come on … Mya danced with Dance Theatre of Harlem and was in THREE dance movies as a professional dancer, including Cellblock Tango in Chicago). Mya deligitimatizes the entire show because the joy is watching these stars learn something new … instead she’s telling Dmitry to dumb down the dances. UGH. So by default I’m voting for Donny. LOVE Kelly, but don’t think she has the fanbase so I’m stuck voting Team Osmond (and the judges are making sure he’s at the bottom of the barrel to “fix” the fan base).

  • Barbara Dietrich

I agree with the 0 personality of Mya. All of her latin dances look exactly the same and also the same as the video they showed of her performing. No improvement and I do not think that she can even look Demitry in the eye let alone smolder or even seem to have fun. I love Kelly and Donny for the pure joy and honesty that they show evey week, with their partner, the judges and fan bases. Makes the dances alive. And not to toot the age factor too much, Donny is amazing, 51, performing a dynamite show in Vegas and STILL on DWTS in the semis! There is no comparison!

    • caroline

I agree that mya is sort of short on personality-the judges pick to much at the other dancers.

  • jenna

This is the first year i have watched dwts and i dont vote cuz i dont really have a favorite. but i dont want kelly to win i think the judges, mostly carrie ann babied her way to much throughout the show

  • Dee

Kelly is great hope she stays she make the show,if she leaves i want watch eny more.I want care who wins.

  • IMissKristi

I just watched, and all were better than I expected. I’m not a big Mya fan, but her Latin was great tonight. I felt sorry for Donny and Kym getting caught in that awful dress!!!

  • eva

This has really been the worst season of dwts. I think Kelly and Louie are so cute and make a cute team. I hope they win. Louie is humble and so is Kelly and they really try to please. Some of the dances are too raunchy for 8:00 because a lot of little ones are still up.

  • Farris Flagg

Donny Osmond!!!! MYA IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!!! SHE GOT ANOTHER 30 TONIGHT!!!!!!
