Last January, Drew Barrymore made her interest in making a third Charlie’s Angels movie public. Slight change of plans. Now, she’d like to update the old TV show for ABC. A rep for Sony Pictures Television confirms that the network is close to ordering a pilot of the reboot, which Barrymore would develop with Leonard Goldberg, who produced the original series with Aaron Spelling, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles‘ Josh Friedman, who’s been tapped to write and exec produce.
The challenges facing the team are many: Though we all seem to get excited about action shows centered on ass-kicking woman, Nielsen families don’t. Fox canned Terminator and now Dollhouse, NBC made Chuck earn its renewal in Subway sandwiches. As we’ve seen (hello, Knight Rider), nostalgia will get you buzz, but it alone won’t keep viewers coming back week after week. Then there’s casting, which will set the tone for the show. Here’s hoping they’ll be looking for women in their late 20s or 30s (as the original did). It’s so much more appealing, for me at least, to think about watching women play detective rather than girls.
My colleague Michael Slezak was quick to offer his dream cast: Dirty Sexy Money’s Natalie Zea, who played Karen Darling; Alias‘ Merrin Dungey, who played Francie; and Secret Diary of a Call Girl’s leading lady Billie Piper. I’d keep Zea, and add Terminator Salvation’s Moon Bloodgood, and, in the Kate Jackson role, Claire Danes. Word was she was being courted last pilot season. (UPDATE: If Danes won’t bite, I’d go with one of the reader suggestions below: Felicia Day. I should have thought of that. Love her.)

I would keep SUmmer Glau and Renee Olstead but cant stand Kaley, would use zooey deschanel instead. She and renee could sing in every episode

Clare Danes ? HAHAHHAH…She would never except to do yet another attempt to redo Angels. She too smart and successful – why would she ?
No to Lindsay Price, I believe she’s the reason Eastwick and Dirty Sexy Money didn’t work, she is an awful actress, and a big NO to Claire Danes, there is a reason why her only show on ABC was cancelled mid-season.

Was watching the original that I bought during the summer and kept wondering about another movie so glad to hear this news!! Maybe they will make an apology to cancelling Dollhouse and have Eliza Dushku and Summer Glau on the New Charlie’s Angels. I do agree with Natalie Zea and Merrin Dungey (if the cast were a little older) .. Maybe they could even have Lindsey Price now that Eastwick is cancelled. With so many “Cop” shows on it would be refreshing to have an all-female cast!!!

Claire danes is genius choice, specially if she’s actaully up to demanding actions scenes.
However, given her choice fo oles, she might decline. So, within actress with butt-kicking fame or great phisicallity they bought to past roles, I think some good choices would be:
- Melissa George for a bitchy Angel (In Treatment showed she’s got lots of range, and Alias showed she knows how to do actions scenes)
- Grace Park for a more mysterious Angel (she would be great, as Battlestar Galactica showed)
- Rosario Dawson for a more bad ass, rebel Angel (of Sin City, she deserves more recognition, and I’m she sure be on board if the project turns out to be inteesting)

Jennifer Morrison is too stoic to play such a fun role. She had moments of greatness on House, but it consistently felt like she was more of a caricature than a character. I don’t want her to bring that to a role where that would be even more of a problem.

Lucy Hale is also a great choice. The minute I saw the Hale’s I knew they would be ones to watch.

ITA. This is cancellation waiting to happen. This NEVER needs to happen.The original show was great, the movies, not so much. Don’t go messing up a good thing.
How about a show that hasn’t been done before? Let’s try a FRESH concept instead of a moldy old fiddle from 30 years ago!
Have you watched the origionals? They suck. Perhaps they were groundbreaking back in the day, but as reference material, there’s nothing there.
