'30 Rock': The best Kenneth episode ever?

If there’s been a better episode for Kenneth in 30 Rock history, I’d love to know: From the backwards-talking to the bizarre fury, this was Jack McBrayer’s finest (half) hour. But “The Problem Solvers” had a lot of good parts, particularly this bit from Jack, which needs to be made into a .gif right now:

Onward to the best 10 lines from “The Problem Solvers!”

“By Lesbian Yellow Sourfruit” — Liz, who looks exactly okay

“I hope he likes janitor hugs,” and “He looks like all the guys in my magazines.” — The Janitor, who is a living lesson in the fact that there are no small parts, only small actors

“Spittake! Are you serious?” — Liz, who just ate a weird panini

“I feel about as useless as a mom’s college degree.” — Kenneth, who helps Tracy brush his teeth

“Raise your hand if you’re cool with what’s happening!” — Liz

“Representing humans and monkeys…” — Simon, whose third potential contact was “to be determined w/research”

“So what if Kenneth’s bitter? He’s an underhuman!” — Jenna, whose face has changed naturally

“Then who’s gonna host Top Chef? You’re ruining my life!” — Liz, who’s probably jealous of Padma’s sandwich bag invention

“Who said I’ve been alive forever?!” — Kenneth, in easily the best Kenneth moment of all time

“Nine hours/A few minutes” — Tracy and Jenna, who’ve been here for how long?

Okay, PopWatchers, do you want to do business together? What lines were your favorites?

  • Obligatory….

    “This show sucks” comment.

    • I can somewhat agree with that…

This show has gone downhill since about midway through season 2.
It’s almost like there’s no real effort being put into it anymore.

      • ^ ^

        Emmys don’t lie, pal!!!

      • ^^^^^

        Neither do low ratings!
        :p

      • mike

        Last night’s ratings:

        The Office 7.8 mill
        30 Rock 5.8 mill
        Jay Leno 5.4 mill

A 2 million viewer drop from The Office and its Emmy competition. I don’t know who the 30 Rock Execs slept with to win all these Emmys but they should throw in a fruit basket or something next time.

      • Sara

Yes, because all shows with low ratings suck. Idiot.

      • Sara…

The show doesn’t suck, but it’s not that great. Now go finish that family-sized bag of Doritos and wash the powdery orange cheese off of your keyboard.

      • mike

hey sara who are you replying too?

Simmer down, it just is not the best comedy on television for the last 3 years running.

And right now I’ll take Modern Family over anything else.

      • mike

I’m crushed by your sincerely mature reply. It is no wonder you find the assinine antics of the 30 Rock bunch funny. You madam are not sophisticated. JK ;)

      • mike

Name calling is not nice and should not be condoned here. Please control your exceedingly large temper and be civil.

      • Baby Buster

30 Rock is funny, you guys. Ratings? Ratings?!?? Two and a Half Men gets super-high ratings. It also makes me reach for my eye bleach. It’s basically a scientific fact that America-at-large has terrible taste (Exhibit A: Jeff Dunham). Using high ratings as a testament to a show’s quality is not a great argument. Just sayin’, y’all…

      • Don’t worry Mike

I think she clicked on the “Life with Ulcerative Colitis” info link and found help.

      • Sara

30 Rock is all about the little things. I tend to think of it like I thought of Arrested Development – it’s a good show, but to really “get it” you have to actually pay attention. I end up re-watching it on Fridays just to make sure I caught everything. The shows you really have to pay attention to to find amusing don’t usually do especially well.

Thursday nights are really competitive anyway. In past years I would watch non-NBC shows live, because I knew I could watch NBC shows on Hulu the next day. Thankfully the execs seem to be taking DVR viewing and sanctioned online viewing into account, not solely the overnights.

      • Sara

(I should’ve specified that last one was a DIFFERENT Sara.)

      • Mike:

Wow! Those are pitiful ratings if 30Rock is just barely above Leno’s fiasco!
I think 30Rock is an experimental show and probably needs to be axed. People can say how it was “ahead of it’s time” much like the dearly departed Arrested Development and the show can keep it’s cult status.
I’ve tried really hard to enjoy 30Rock, but it’s not my cup of tea.
I really don’t understand why it was able to generate so much hype and win Emmys, but I guess if you consider the competition out there these days for comedies that there isn’t much. The sitcom is a dying breed.

      • There was only one Sara…

My Doritos retort was directed at Sara.

There have been so many comments about how 30 rock has gone downhill the last three years. The perception that it is bad is really based on the fact that it’s not a new or fresh concept anymore. I mean the show itself. But the storylines are just as fresh as ever. This “Problem Solvers” episode was great 30 Rock writing. It is still one of the sharpest tv shows around. Time will tell if “Modern Family” or “Community” are better shows, but they are just starting out. All great shows settle in a little bit and get comfortable with themselves, but 30 Rock is not one of them. There are always new storylines forming, and by that I mean they carry along and develop over the course a few episode. Still my favorite show on tv right now.

    • NBC sucks these days…

I think the only 2 good shows it has going for it these days are The Office (which is somewhat floundering for me this season) and the promise of what Community could become.
30 Rock, Parks & Rec, Leno, and even Heroes are either awful or severely mediocre. Isn’t Comcast thinking about buying the network? I hope they clean house when they do.

  • pop

“Who said I’ve been alive forever”! omg i said a few weeks ago when he was in the clip from the microwave dance that one day we’ll find out hes really like 102

    • dave

That was so great! I really love this gag hinting that Kenneth may be really really old. I hope they bring it up every once in a while like they did in both of those episodes.

  • Sara

Jack: Liz, what did you once say to be about acting?

Liz: Just hit your marks, stay in your light, and do the same thing every take for continuity. (is suddenly wearing a scarf)

    • kim in kentucky

      … and holding a drink w/straw

      • Petey

I totally missed that the first time – further proof that this show is hilarious/genius on so many levels.

      • whatever

Yes ! I made me laugh so hard because I realised I had missed something and had to rewatch the scene again.

    • james d

I caught the drink but not the scarf, I’ll have to go back and look at that.

      • Annie

Seriously? It was a giant bright red scarf…

  • Horatio

Kenneth is one of the problems with the show (along with Jenna and Tracey), so have to respectfully disagree with Ms. Lyons…

  • Bobby’s Robot

“I’m a Celebrity Dog, Get Me Out Arf Here”

    • BLM

Ha! That just made me giggle again!

  • Chris Shifty

“Who said I’ve been alive forever?!”

going to watch that again on TiVo. Amazing. Someone needs to put together a Kenneth best moments YouTube video.

  • LOL

Last night’s NBC line-up wasn’t up to par.

    • When was the last time NBC line was ever up to par?

Probably when Seinfeld was still on!

  • tnsmoke

Love Kenneth, he was a hoot in this episode. Also thought Padma was great and love when Jack and Liz have “almost” romantic moments, tho I don’t want them to act on it.

  • Dan

    Kenneth isn’t funny. Just annoying.

  • Rich

My favorite Kenneth moment was when he turned all Emperor Palpatine on the new guy, “Yes…give in to your hate…”

  • James

I cracked up in the moment with the pizza box full of waffles.

  • paige

    mmmmm Cheyenne Jackson yummy

  • John

    My favorite Kenneth moments:

“It’s hard for me to watch American Idol, because there’s a water-bug on my channel changer!”

“Ooooh No, when I git upset ma accent coomes out!”

and tonight’s “Who said I’ve been alive forever?!”

  • Sarah D

I LOVE Kenneth, he sees in muppet vision! I also loved the end where Liz and Jack rotate instead of just the camera, also when Jack changed the new guy’s name. This show is clever and entertaining :)

    • tnsmoke

The “Apollo Apollo” episode from last seasn was totally brillian, when we haw how Kenneth sees Jack, Liz and Tracy as Muppets!

      • tnsmoke

Yikes…sorry for typos. Meant to say “was brilliant when we saw how”

  • Elizabeth

I think there have been some better Kenneth episodes, like when he got to create his own game show or when Jack used him for “bait” for Devin, when he tries to be a page for the Olympics, but the Best Kenneth episode in my opinion was the Night Court reunion show.

    • Lala

The Night Court reunion was brilliant!
