Tina Fey and Steve Carell's 'Date Night' trailer has more gunshots, car crashes than expected

When we started hearing about the new Steve Carell-Tina Fey comedy Date Night earlier this year, I kind of pictured a witty, domestic comedy of errors. Articles described the movie as a romcom about a couple whose night out goes laughably awry, so I immediately pictured something like a mix of Baby Mama and Dan in Real Life, with maybe a dash of Adventures in Babysitting from the parents POV.

Boy, was I wrong.

Judging by the movie’s just-leaked trailer, Date Night (coming in April) is as much an action pic as a comedy — like an earth-bound Mom and Dad Save the World, or Mr. and Mrs. Smith with fewer assault weapons. Take a look:

Your turn, PopWatchers: Were you guys expecting this much action?

Steve Carell & Tina Fey could be reading the phone book for 2 hours and Id still pay for the price of admission

    • Stella

      I totally agree.

    • LB

      I second that.

    • Ceballos

Bonus points if Carell reads it in his Michael Klump voice and Fey reads it in her spacey Princess Leia voice.

  • Fatima

    Ehhhh…not as optimistic.
I have a sudden hatred of Common now too after his annoying film career and his sell out of a last album.

  • Dory

    This looks so awesome!

  • Fey…

…should drop this 30 Rock nonsense and just make movies.

  • Mothra

OMG! That looks AWESOME! I can’t wait to see it. If they had anything to do with the script, it will be classic. Yay!

  • crispy

    LOL Wow, this looks great!

  • FarleyC

    Hysterical!! YAY!

  • Julia

Ok, I kinda liked it. If it were another Rom/Com (I just endured “The Proposal” despite my like for Bullock and Reynolds), it would be forgettable. This looks to have a dash of “After Hours.” At least I hope.

  • Katie

How did I not know that James Franco was going to be in this? I mean, I love Tina and Steve but anytime James Franco is playing that weird guy but probably hilarious character (a la sol from pineapple express) I am so there. This movie looks great!

    • AK

I know! That Franco/Kunis cameo looks hilarious!

  • craig

kinda reminds me of those 70’s comedies, where innocent people are in the wrong place at the wrong time and get involved with comic intrigue like “Silver Streak” and ‘Foul Play”

  • stacy

    awes!

  • couchgrouch

looks like a kick ass blast with a kick ass cast. I’m there.

  • Sara

I totally was not expecting all of the action but I have to say I think this movie looks pretty awesome!

  • pop

its what happened when the kids from adventures in babysitting were on their adventure

    • marven gardens

You are EXACTLY right – this does steal Adventures in Babysitter’s premise.

Also, another example of too much in the trailer. The entire movie is laid out before you. Why spend twenty bucks at the cinema, I just saw it for free and in one minute.

What a waste of comedic talent.

  • Iron

I want to go to there!

    • LB

ooh, i made the same comment before reading yours!

  • tvchick

Looks awesome…too bad we have to wait until April!!

  • graeme

That looks pretty great. Love that Wahlberg and Franco turn up too.

  • Dwight

This is actually a good thing. If it were just another Rom-Com it would be BFD.

This is what every red blooded guy and gal weighed down by kids, jobs, scheds, etc would want if their date night went wrong. Smart comedy and action can’t beat that.

  • Steve

April can’t come fast enough! Screw Christmas!

  • claudenorth

    Derivative crap, strictly for Fey-natics.

  • garvey

Some North by Northwest sprinkled in here.

  • brandy

my favorite part is that it looks (and sounds) completely like liz lemon and michael scott got married and are now high-action crime fighters.

    • LB

just reading that statement made me laugh! oh, I think this is a must see.

  • Dan

Why are James Franco and Mila Kunis together ringing a bell? Were they a couple in something else?

    • Telly B

Dan, Kunis and Franco were a couple in a parody of The Hills that was featured in FunnyOrDie.com.

And GOD, this looks awesome!!! Can’t wait! I hope the script was written by Fey, she is terrific

  • G

this will help it’s box office haul, i think. If it was pure rom-com, i’d probably wait until it made its way onto dvd. if it’s this “mr and mrs smith”-on-the-run meets “get smart”-type-action meets comedy stylings of the two leads, it will be interesting to say the least.

  • kelsey

Before seeing the trailer, I pictured this movie as a more sohpisticated film about a married couple’s night out on the town. But this doesn’t look bad at all. Now I just hope, as I do whenever I see ANY trailer, that they didn’t already show me the ending.

  • LB

I want to go to there

  • j

cool plot, i didn’t really want another generic “waste of talent” movie that seems to plague TV stars

  • Ugly Jenny

I love Steve Carrell. To me, he can do no wrong. Added bonus of James Franco and Marky Mark for the added hotness in this movie.

  • Rhonda

Twenty bucks says my parents will go see this with their movie buddies the Plaskys.

  • officelover

Noot baad but nothing tops Michael Scott and the gang.
