Eliza Dushku killed what might have been an interesting show. The supporting actors in “Dollhouse” were amazing, but she wasn’t up to their level, and often the storylines felt like they’d been reconfigured to be a vehicle for her rather than serve the show. Yep, showkiller, definitely.
I don’t entirely disagree, but she was also a major part “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in Season 3, that the show lasted four years after that, even bringing her back in Season 7. I don’t think she’s strong enough to carry a show, but she didn’t kill “Dollhouse.” Fox killed “Dollhouse” by demanding that the first 5 eps be stand-alones and making Joss re-shoot the premiere. Listen to the commentary track on, I believe, the sixth episode on DVD, and you’ll realize that show could have been very different in the first season.
I have to stick up for Summer Glau.
First, she wasn’t a regular on “Dollhouse,” only a guest star who (SPOILERS) got killed. The show was almost cancelled after the first season, and she wasn’t in it at all that season.
“The Sarah Connor Chronicles” was just a bad show, with astonishingly bad writing and zero character development. Indeed, what little character there was could be violated for the sake plot, which is just lazy writing. (Like the time Sarah was freaking out about John while driving, even though he was obviously fine, because the writers needed a car accident. Also, did you notice that people never smiled on that show?)
As for “Firefly,” a very, very good case could be made that Fox killed that show. They may as well have driven a stake through its heart.
Summer, by the way, was also on “The 4400,” and didn’t kill that one (though again bad writing did) and guested on “Angel,” which survived just fine after her appearance.
If you’re going to blame her for killing “Dollhouse,” in which she was on 4 episodes, then explain “The Unit,” where she appeared on 7 eps.
Also, “Serenity” was a fairly successful film, and critically well-received. Not bad for a movie based on a one season TV show. Better than “The X-Files” flicks.
Summer also guested on “The Big Bang Theory,” and it was promoted that she was on, a little stunt casting, there. Seems to be doing just fine.
Networks and/or bad writing kills TV shows, not actors.
