'Extraordinary Measures' trailer: cue tears

Sick kids + parents fighting against the odds + the “system” trying to keep them down + man hugs = I’m crying already.

Tom Vaughan directs the drama Extraordinary Measures, based on the true story of John Crowley, a father who defied the odds to find a cure for his children’s rare illness.

I wasn’t sure I could buy Keri Russell and Brendan Fraser as a couple, but they seem to work (though I still sometimes have trouble accepting my beloved Felicity as a mom). Harrison Ford brings a more human dimension to the iconoclastic scientist. And did you catch the supporting players including Jared Harris (Mad Men’s Lane Pryce)?

It’s out Jan. 22. What do you think of the trailer? Yes, it looks totally schmaltzy but am I the only sap who is always moved by an illness movie?

It will be nice to see Brendan Fraser in a movie where he isn’t fighting otherworldly creatures. I think he is a terrific and undervalued actor, and it will also be nice to see Harrison Ford without a fedora and whip. I enjoy his non-Indy movies. Looks like a sad one, and I will be sure to pack some Kleenex. By January 22nd I will be ready for a good cry anyway.

    yeah i’ll go watch that.

Nope, not feeling it. It just looks kind of lame, and like one of those movies where the kids both live, or one doesn’t make it but its all just to over dramatic. Maybe I’m jaded. This isn’t good for someone my age.

Is that the intro to “Ashes” by Embrace playing at about 30 seconds in?

Oh dear, I was thinking more about a song than I was about the film. Very poor trailer, but the film itself has held my interest over the last couple of years (what with it’s hilarious title changes and all).

Harrison Ford: “no one is gonna tell me to GET OFF MY PLANE!!!”

yea- thanks but no thanks… This looks like the Lifetime version of Lorenzo’s Oil…

When I first read this item, I understood it as “I’m not sure I buy Kurt Russel and Brendan Fraser as a couple.” (Me neither…Yikes!)

I’ve got my reading glasses on now.

I also have been dying to see Brendan play in dramatic films,i mean i love the mummy films and even a few of his comdies i think he is much more gracious in the dramatic category. Look at some of his earlier films and you’ll see what i’m talking about…he should of won an oscar a long time ago especially for his role in Gods and Monsters

I saw this movie last week at a screening and it was excellent.

It’s not really about the “system” trying to keep anyone down. It’s more about how human action, the pursuit of self interest, entrepreneurial skill, scientific ingenuity, and profit maximizing financiers and corporate executives can all come together to produce a medical miracle. Yes, the business types are at times portrayed as unlikeable, but missing were the villainous corporations and heroic trial lawyers. And thankfully, government bureaucrats and politicians were no where to be found.
