'A Single Man' trailer: Do you smell Oscar buzz...or just vagueness?

Style hounds, gird your loins: The trailer for Tom Ford’s directorial debut A Single Man is here, and lo, it is gorgeous.

I’m a-quiver! Now that Mad Men has wrapped up for the season, I’ll need my dose of mid-century design in other formats, and this moody trailer is so tantalizing I can hardly contain myself. (Not shockingly, Mad Men and A Single Man share a production desginer, Dan Bishop). Plus ASM is one of the 15 holiday movies we can’t wait to see, Colin Firth is an Oscar contender, and the film is destined to break our hearts. Sign me up, PW Nation!

I’m drawn in by how vague this trailer is, PopWatchers, but not everyone likes a guessing game. Do you wish A Single Man had a more direct trailer, or are you all about the mystery?

    FLAWLESS!…

This movie looks fantastic–the style of it, yes, but also the substance. The novel by Christopher Isherwood is one of the most touching, fully realized works of gay fiction I’ve read. Can’t wait for this adaptation.

Glorious! Simply glorious. I’m hooked from the trailer alone. And it has Julianne Moore. JULIANNE MOORE PEOPLE!!!!

  • crispy

Shhhhh, don’t tell anyone this movie is about gay people.

    • Emilio

I agree. There is not much to imply that Colin Firth is a gay man or that there is any gay context at all. It was similar to some of the promotions for Brokeback Mountain that held off on the gay plot points. Am I alone in noticing this??

  • Luddite

Certainly vague, but totally beguiling. I know so little about the story and would have seen it for Colin Firth and Julianne Moore alone, but that trailer was so foreboding and mysterious that I’m dying to find out how each of those glimpses fit into the larger plot. I’m there.

yes… yes… and YES!!! I cant wait for this moving… nothing gets to me like a well edited, non revealing, haunting and beautiful trailer… Julianne Moore looks like she’s about to break my heart again like she did in Boogie Nights, Far from heaven and so many others… seriously, how she hasnt won in Oscar is disturbing

      AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This movie looks great!
Hoping for an Oscar for Colin! He deserves it!

Um, I want to go to see this.

I’m a sucker for really well-made trailers, but this cast makes it so intriguing.

Can we finally get Colin Firth an Oscar Nod?! Also,
    LEE PACE!!!!!!!!!

  • Madd

What is the music in this trailer?!

  • William

I saw the movie last week at the Chinese Theatre. I couldn’t believe how much I did not like the movie. With that said, Colin Firth was amazing and should get a nomination. But he’s the only one from this long, “trying to pretend it’s artistic” movie.

They cut the trailer like a Pedro Almodovar one, which is very smart (Oscar campaigning and marketing-wise) and makes me even more excited for the film.

    • Dre

OMG yes!! Totally agree! Does anyone know what the name of this beautiful song is?

      • smd

Carlos by Shigeru Umebayashi; it’s on the official soundtrack CD

  • MJ

I love Colin Firth. I’m not particularly fond of the vagueness, but it’s preferable to the trailers that give away the entire plot of the movie.

  • graeme

Yeah, I have a feeling Julianne is gonna rock the crap out of this.

There’s no dialogue so the trailer has to be gorgeous, rii? I split; I read the book and I think Tom Ford is a mastermind so I’m curious about the movie but on the other hand I hate vague movie campaigns. I missed out on Seven Pounds last year b/c I didn’t know wth the movie was about, but I kept hearing there was some HUGE surprise. Then I watched it on cable the other day and I saw the reveal coming a mile away. I just this movie doesn’t go that same route and turn people away in the process.
