'Survivor' preview: Too soon for a merge?

With the Foa Foa tribe getting their collective heiny kicked each and every week, the producers of Survivor: Samoa tonight decide to finally stop the bleeding and merge the tribes early (a traditional merge happens with 10 contestants left, as opposed to the 12 that are remaining now). Whether this is a case of producers pressing the panic button or simply shaking things up to keep contestants on their toes is up for debate, but either way, it seems like the right call. Hey, no one loves watching a complete tribal decimation more than I do, but we’ve read this script before back in Palau, and it was much more riveting then as Koror won every single immunity challenge until it was just Stephenie LaGrossa hanging out by her lonesome self back at the Ulong camp. With the exception of Dreadlocked Russell’s frightening collapse, things have grown a bit stale in Samoa, so it was time for a change. Plus, if the previews are any indication, we may be treated to a bounty of scrambling and self-destruction. Although Galu is up in numbers 8-4, the four names (Monica, Laura, Shambo, Erik) we all heard in the preview being talked about for being voted out were all from Galu! Remember last season on Tocantins when every single person on Timbira (who had the numbers advantage) developed a major crush on J.T. and wanted to use him to oust their fellow tribemates? Well, we all know how that turned out: J.T. got rid of the Timbira members one by one until his tribe had the numbers. Could Galu be such knuckleheads that they make the exact same mistake Timbira made all over again? We’ll see, but it at least adds some intrigue back into a season that was starting to feel stale, and also gives Evil Russell a chance to plant a few more “Russell seeds.”

What do you think? Does the merge come at the right time? Will Galu blow it by voting off their own? And has anyone figured out who the hell Brett is yet? I think it will be funny, especially when it appears what will be evident to everyone on Foa Foa that no one is really on the same page on Galu and they are still back in week one strategy play whereas Foa Foa is experts at it.

That is the advantage of losing and having to go to tribal – you start thinking strategy. The tribe who’s been living easy is caught off guard.

Hey Dalton I think you really has to give Brett a break. As far as I’m concerned he did extremely well on challenges, He was the tribe’s leader on the reward challenge last episode and he contributed alot in the immunity challenge. I think so far he did great job for not being in the obvious, being under the radar is a way to play the game in survivor, too. So please quit that, “has anyone figure out who Brett is” routine you always performed every episode.

i believe this to be more of a shot at the producers and editors than it is at brett.

      • Gogo

Agreed. He’s just being fun. It’s not hurtful.

  • RememberMe

Whenever I hear talk of “planting Russell seeds”, I picture bad things

    • oh dear

bad, baaaaaaaaad things…someone make it stop!

Am I the only one who thinks they gave the contestants new bathing suits simply to give Russel some article of clothing to cover himself? Those first few episodes probably caught the attention of the FCC with Russell and his boxer-briefs.

Today is my birthday and the only gift I really want is Russell being voted OUT tonight!

    • tdunf

but, my fellow canuck, mine is tomorrow and i’d really like him to stay.

      • TorontoTrupti

Well it’s not my birthday but I’d like to see Russell leave! lol…Not sure if that’s happening. I have a feeling he’s going to pick off Galu one by one…

      • Elena

Okay, both of you, Toronto Tom and tdunf, Happy Birthday. Have a good one!!

    • hey dumb dumb

Get a clue. Russell cant be voted out tonight. Well not completely out. He has the hidden immunity idol. So he’ll get “saved” at least once… and thus can not leave tonight regardless.

Beyond that, it will take awhile for Galu people to figure out Russell is as destructive as he really is. Foa Foa has oodles of chances to get rid of him and didn’t.

The absolute earliest Russell is going home is 3 weeks from now. He’s not going tonight. Say he is forced to play the hidden immunity idol next week.. and then he’d have to get votes again the next week.

      • Elena

Not necessarily so. The vast majority of Survivors who have scored the hidden immunity idol went on to slink out of there in ignominious defeat for not having played it. It’s not a blanket get out of jail free card. You have to play it to be saved by it.

      • Cathy

Russell has the Galu immunity idol, not the Foa Foa one so if he plays it, he should be booted, if the votes are for him

    • Sharilynn

I like Russell, but only because he is PLAYING the game. It is a game people. Emotions shouldn’t come into play, and when they do, you lose. It’s usually the devious ones that make it the farthest, because the others aren’t smart enough to devise worthwhile plans. I wish him luck.

    can’t wait!!

  • STOP SPOILING ON TWITTER

You’re like a 5 year old with a secret. A little self restraint please. Nevermind, unfollowed.

  • jammy

I don’t think there will be a merge…I think this will be like what was done on Survivor Thailand..everyone will think its a merge ..then split the groups into 2 new tribes 6 each and have them live on the same beach ..its better than having some ridiculous ..”you must vote out 5 people for this next tribal council”

  • Loretta

I would rather have them split into two new tribes as suggested by jammy. I think it is too soon for a merger.
