The newest Sherlock Holmes trailer is out, and boy is it muscular and sassy! Generally, those are two great tastes that taste great together:
It’s not hugely different than the other trailers we’ve already seen, but at least it mercifully excludes the truly terrible tagline “Holmes for the holiday,” which makes me want to cry (in a bad way).
I’m usually on Team Deductive Reasoning and not Team Blow Stuff Up, but between the always-alluring Robert Downey, Jr., the very pretty Jude Law, the under-appreciated Rachel McAdams, and lots of flirtatious banter, this movie might suck me in. How about you, PopWatchers? Will you be heading to Baker Street?

Having read some of the originals, I’ve been defending this as still fairly true to the ACD’s stories (yes, he boxes. Yes, he uses guns. Yes, he battles Bond-like villains in boat chases and precarious heights). But this trailer suggests the action is more pervasive than I’d hoped.
True – they’ve got some basis for it. The original Holmes was a crack shot and a top notch fighter, but that was always pretty much a background detail. So yeah, I’m very much hoping the all-action-all-the-time look is just an attempt at a flashy trailor, and not really the defining characteristic of the film.
I don’t approve of this adaptation of Holmes. That being said, I adore Rachel McAdams and Robert Downey Jr. I’M SO TORN!
Meh…I’ll probably end up seeing it.
when i first heard about this i thought it sounded fantastic! then i saw the trailer and was really put off by all the action sequences.. thought it would be a more fun, suspenseful, Illusionist type of a thing.
I think it looks good, I think the character will be more like the books which is great, the action wil only make it more exciting. I just hope that the gay storyline that was hinted at in interviews was made up for hype, if that isn’t the case then a gay Holmes will RUIN the movie.
hell yeah! I’m there!
This has a horrible, bloated “Wild, Wild West” feeling to it. Unless I hear otherwise from someone I trust, this is a skip.
I am more interested based on this trailer than the others – that Holmes for the Holidays thing makes my ears bleed. Love Rachel McAdams, and feel she generally classes up any movie she’s in, so I’m on board. But, I do agree that there is likely a whole lot more slow-mo punching and action stuff than I’d hoped when I first heard about the project. Meh to that; as Well points out, some action is warranted, but let’s not get nuts.
I am totally sold on this. CanNOT wait. Will drive out of town to see it if I have to, since our rinkydink theater doesn’t always get the movies I want to see. Thanks for posting this awesome trailer!
is rachel mcadams supposed to have an english accent? if so, it’s not a good one.
Nope! Irene Adler is American (at least in the stories).
I’m hoping it’s good. Either way, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. I’m a sucker for these bromantic action flicks. >.>
I love the SH character and really enjoyed “Young Sherlock Holmes”, except for the rehashed “Egyptian Temple of Doom” plot. Not excited if this is the same kind of been there done that supernatural plot. A bunch of studio types siting around saying, “Hey, what’s hot right now, oh vampires, so let’s work that in”. I also am a huge Robert Downey Jr. fan, but still would have liked to see Hugh Laurie in this role. But all that said, I’m still looking forward to seeing it, although probably when it comes out on Blu-ray.
Despite the producer’s comments that “everything in the movie can be found in the books,” the fact is that the modernized sexual innuendo and the cliched “action movie” antics of RDJ mean this is the “Wild Wild West”/Bruckheimer-style version of Holmes. It’ll make money, but it won’t be Holmes.
Bring it on like Donkey Kong — I’m looking forward to spending part of my Christmas with Robert and Jude!
HELL. YES. I love RDJ, I love Jude Law, I’ve adored Sherlock Holmes since I was 10, and while I’m confused about McAdams’s nationality here (American or British honey? Make up your mind) I’m going to be there on opening night.
The character is American.

I love that Mark Strong is Moriarty, he was so good in Rock n Rolla, I think he’s going to be a star.
He’s not playing Moriarty.
