'90210' recap: Drugs! Pregnancy! Issues!

Okay, first off, I love this Ivy girl. It might just be because I want her surfer-chick wardrobe (contrary to popular opinion at West Bev, I don’t think she ever looks like a dude, and I think she always looks casual, not-trying-too-hard hot). Of course a part of my heart will always belong to Naomi, but I can’t think of a better way for Liam to move on from the Jen quagmire than with this super-cool girl with whom he has a genuine friendship, not just hot sex. And on that note: Please, please 90210 gods, bring me a resolution to that sister love triangle once and for all … we seem to be inching ever closer, but it’s high time.

We did get some resolution (I think, maybe?) on the Sasha front, which pleases me to no end. What I don’t get is why on earth a “grown woman,” as she’s repeatedly called, would fake a pregnancy to win back her teenage lover. I’m thrilled, however, that we will not be tackling the Pregnancy Issue — old-school 90210 loved any and all issues, but I like this version heavier on the love triangles and Bitch Factor, light on the serious. Good for Debbie, too, finally getting to do something by figuring out that Sasha was full of crap. (Though what grown woman doesn’t know that no one gets a sonogram in the first month of pregnancy?)

Alas, we did start up with the Drugs Issue this episode. Seems our little budding auteur Jasper (am I the only one who’s now dying to see this black-and-white, mascaraed-up-Annie movie he’s making in its entirety?) is — cue dastardly music! — a drug dealer! We know because Rumer Willis tipped off Navid for his expose on prescription drug abuse in high school! (This poor girl needs a real storyline, like, three episodes ago, as there’s nothing worse than a new character who suddenly shows up in everyone’s business for no apparent reason — other than, of course, being played by Hollywood offspring. Thank goodness she’ll be — SPOILER ALERT — getting one soon.)

Though I still would’ve liked the whole Jasper thing better if he’d turned out to be seeking some twisted revenge on Annie for killing his uncle — and he still might — his dealing did tie in nicely with Adriana’s downward spiral. The poor thing actually serenaded Navid with her guitar in the quad, looking stunning as always in a white dress — it almost seemed like a dream sequence at first, it was all so sweet. But he still turned her down, taking a hardcore you-betrayed-me stance and sending her to the dark side. Soon enough, she was hitting Jasper up for a Ziploc full of pills out of his car trunk. Sigh.

We did get our Bitch Quotient — and then some — filled entirely by the Master Manipulator Jen tonight. She walked right in on Ryan at home with a date, blithely going on about her terribly uncomfortable shoes before getting awfully jealous for a woman who doesn’t care for unwealthy teachers. She saved her best performance for when she visited the date, Ramona, a bartender in (horrors!) Silverlake, at her place of employment later. “I didn’t recognize you; you’re much older-looking close up.” “You look like a singer-songwriter.” And, then, to Ryan: “She looks like she has a great personality.” I still don’t buy the Jen-Ryan coupling, but their “no, you stop seeing other people” fight that led to deciding to be exclusive was priceless. And really, if this finally leads to some final confrontation between Ryan’s now-girlfriend and his new favorite student, Liam, all the better. Her lying to Ryan about Liam coming onto her at the NERD party better be nearly the last straw.

Speaking of the NERD party, I liked the song they performed alright, and the gossip mags’ favorite celebrity DJ, Sam Ronson, was perfectly serviceable in her big acting part, telling Navid to “go for it” with some girls because they were “pretty cute.” (Get it? Because she’s a lesbian!) And Teddy keeps surprising me, seeming awfully sleazy one minute and then distracting Silver from cancer talk by quipping, “I’m using a new hair product in my locks.” And I was glad to see my girl Ivy check on Liam at home and plant a kiss on him instead of beating around the bush — though, wow, I really wish she’d found out what’s under that darn tarp first.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Is Ivy a good match for Liam? Are you happy Sasha’s not pregnant? How do you feel about Adriana backsliding into her addiction? When will the Jen-Liam-Naomi cycle end? WHAT’S UNDER THE TARP?

Did anyone else have a huge issue with CW last night? Every 5 seconds the show would cut off and then come back on and the cut right back off. I was unable to watch the show but Melrose Place turned out not to be this way.

    • dj

Same thing happened to me. My Tivo recorded Melrose Place, but not 90210.

  • Former Fan

I can’t take 90210 anymore. I watched about 10 minutes of it last night and then fast forwarded through the rest of it.

I am breaking up with 90210. I tried, I really did. Onto Melrose Place where the storylines involve adults.

    • Rachel

If you wanted to see a show about adults, why were you watching a show about about high school kids? Duh.

    • AnonymooseBlog

Melrose Place sucks since it is trying to cater to viewers of the original series instead of trying to draw in new viewers (which would make it more successful). I’ll be happy when the Sidney storyline is over and we can move on!

Is it weird that I go back and forth constantly on whether I like this show or not? Some of my thoughts after last night:
    1. Is Liam building a boat? The thing under the tarp looks a lot bigger and boat-like now. Please tell me he’s not channeling Seth Cohen and sailing off somewhere. I’m hoping it’s a battlebot he’s training to target and kill Jen.
    2. Yay for no pregnancy – that actress totally annoyed me and the storyline was crazy with the age differences.
    3. I still can’t get past Teddy’s age. And the fact that he pings my gaydar more than anyone on the show. And yet, he’s supposed to be an 18 year old hetero boy? Riiiigggghhhhtttt.
    4. Creepy dealer guy is TOTALLY making a movie that he’s going to cut together to make it look like Annie’s re-enacting and confessing to the homicide she committed. I’ve been saying that since he first showed up. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE IT.
    5. Liam needs to be a major focus of this show. His character is becoming much more nuanced and he’s just as entertaining when he’s funny as when he’s brooding. Plus…..hot. I like the new girl – but please, limit the “Dude” speak to 2 or 3 per episode, not 2 per line.

    And….done.

    • Theresa

      I heart you.

    • Alyssa

I was thinking the exact same thing! What is with Ivy saying dude 3 times per sentence?! Drives me crazy!

    • Diggity

Yes. #4 did not occur to me but I think you are right on. I love this whole post.

      • Nicole

Yay for like-minded posters! Glad you guys agree. Btw, I have no idea if the Annie thing is actually going to happen, it’s just the first thought I had as soon as he said he wanted her to star in a movie. So it’s not an actual spoiler or anything (but I SO hope it turns out to be one!).

      • Angelina

Wow, yes I like all of these points! I hadnt really cared about the movie but now, im excited. Hope you are right!

    • shonna

I think she says “Dude” a lot because she’s nervous – similar to the way other people use the word “like” or “um”.

      • Azien

I was surprised during the last episode because the surfing coach kept saying Gnarly. I didn’t know anyone still used that word.

    • AnonymooseBlog

      1. Definitely a boat. He was making a curved side piece last night and it seems like he has the frame almost complete under there.

      2. Sasha was cool when he first met her, and I liked the actress playing her. But then she turned crazy for some reason, and now I want her gone!

      3. I would never have even known Teddy was as old as he is if everyone did not complain about it!

      4. Do you really think he knows she killed that guy? I thought that storyline had been pushed to the wayside.

      5. Liam is totally the most compelling character but I am liking the small doses instead of overdoing it! Plus, Ivy is totally fine!

Looks like I agreed with most of your points. Yay!

      • Nicole

        1. Yeah, probably a boat. But what’s with all the secrecy? Where is he GOING? :)
        2. I didn’t mind her at first either, but then she got the crazy eyes and, well…
        3. Really?? I’m genuinely (seriously, I’m not being sarcastic) happy for you that you don’t find that Peddy Teddy looks old. You don’t have to suffer the distraction that I do. It’s too bad because I really do like his character – I just wish he was a coach or teacher or something.
        4. I really do…don’t forget, someone pulled up on the scene just as Annie drove off, and they had a BVH sticker on their car. Plus, he’s the guy’s nephew and he’s super creepy.
        5. He is the most compelling character, and I don’t think I’d complain about large doses. You like Ivy, I like Liam. :)
We’re so sympatico – love it!

      • Amy Leigh

@Nicole: In the season premiere, it was revealed that the car that we saw behind Annie when she “hit” the homeless guy was Teddy. That’s why he was talking to the police & part of the investigation. That doesn’t mean that Annie’s boyfriend isn’t trying to get revenge though. I like the idea about his reasons for the movie.

    • Jackie

I love your post especially the idea about Annie’s movie. That never even occured to me (mainly because I doze off whenever she’s on screen – I can’t stand her).

    • KM

Well done Nicole! You summed everything up perfectly!!! Thanks!

    • Sarah

The whole time I’ve been wondering what would lead to him outing her for killing his uncle, like when he got mad at her and stormed off, I was thinking that would be the point. It never occurred to me that the movie was it. It totally makes sense.

    • Sara

I think you’re on to something about #4…I never even thought that but now that I think about it, with the stealing of the car and the crying, I bet he is going to edit it for her confession. OH SNAP!

  • Reena

Good episode last night glad its not becomig a snooze fest…I was hoping Annie would look through the camera at the end and see Jasper giving the bag to Adrianna but we will have to wait til next week glad the mom finally got a little fiesty and a good story line to get Sasha out of the picture kinda annoyed that they are straying away from Annie killing Jasper’s uncle in the hit and run but maybe everything will unravel soon enough

  • Reena

Glad that the series is not becomig a snooze fest…last nights episode was good I was hoping Annie would see Jasper give the bag to Adrianna but atleast it keeps things interesting for next week…glad the mom got a story line besides just going to Yoga and that she got fiesty with Sasha who is now gone thank goodness! Hopefully Naomi will figure out her sister is EVIL but I kinda like Jen manipulating everyone it would suck to see her go but Liam just needs to just tell her and get it all out in the open and then open the tarp! The only thing I can think of is he is plotting something BIG against Jen or maybe even the school?

  • Reena

Not sure what happened posted the first comment and then nothing happend so i retyped it added a few things and now both comments are there WEIRD!

  • Drayche

I really like the Liam Ivy thing I think this will be a good story.I just wonder how Naomi will screw it up.

  • M

Have to say that the show is really improving with each episode.

    • luvit

Completely agree! Loved last nights episode. Although, i think the “upcoming lesbian storyline” wouldve worked better with silver instead of Adrianna. Just my opinion.

      • Mary Q. Contrary

Def. would have been better with Silver. Or, maybe (but I still love Annie and Jasper together and would totally be okay with the producers making them an on and off relationship for the show), a wounded Annie could find comfort in another girl after her and Jasper inevitably implode. I mean, guys haven’t exactly treated her the best, no?

      • AnonymooseBlog

There is a lesbian storyline coming? Thanks for that SPOILER! I specifically try to stay away from that stuff to not ruin the show, but you just f-ed things up for me! Thanks friend!

  • superluli

Great Recap – the ep was really good! Although i was so off base with Rumer Willis’s role, i thought she was going to go for Navid…

  • Emily

Liam is working on a machine that makes Everlasting Gobstoppers, of course! Don’t lift the tarp! LOVED Lori Loughlin’s part in this ep! She finally got a chance to parent without stupid Harry getting in the way! GO MOM!

  • michelekamay

Good episode but still all the storylines lack of solidity.
*DIXON/SASHA/MAMA WILSON: Finally Debbie got something to do other than watching her husband. I liked that, she reminded me of Mama Walsh. Can she look after her daughter too? I gotta disagree with the recapper; a lot of grown women don’t have a clue about pregnancy until they got (really) preggers. I would have preferred Dixon to know all the truth but this storyline is closed so, whatever.
**JEN/RYAN and JEN/LIAM: I don’t like this girl at all, but she’s doing a good bit*hy job. Liam should definitely tell Naomi the truth about her sister. I don’t care about Jen’s lovelife but I like Ryan, he looks like a bearded Mr Schue. BTW, CW writers should stop making their characters dissing on populus districts (silverlake on 90210, brooklyn on GG).
***LIAM/IVY: I’m on the way to like IVY. Finally, a girl who can make Liam smile. She needs to stay around.
****ADRIANNA/ NAVID: The girl had it coming, and now she’s back to her old habits. She broke Navid’s heart, how stupid is she? yes, i’m pissed and it’s for a good reason: they are one – if not the only – good reason to watch 90210. However, how come she skipped school two days in a row and her mother didn’t show up?
*****ANNIE/JASPER: I really like creepy Jasper now. With Annie, they look like two hot messes. I feel sorry for the girl, on and off set; Shenae seems to be on the edge.
******GIA: If one hears about someone being a drug dealer, will the former just snitch it all of sudden in a club meeting? Once again, things do not fall into place here. And the upcoming “lesbian kissing” storyline is lame, lame, lame.
SILVER/TEDDY: I liked their girly talk. They look great together. But I don’t get why he apologized to Navid, he knew Adrianna was Navid’s girlfriend when he was teasing her. If you’re a dog, be a dog, dog.
And it was good to see Pharell and the NERD. Samantha Ronson seems to be cool too.

  • Kate

Okay, did anyone else’s moral compass scream at them last night that stupid Deb and Harry should threaten that tramp Sasha with statutory rape charges? Especially Deb when she figured out the psycho wasn’t preggo? Clearly she had figured out that Sasha knew poor little Dixon was a high schooler way before concocting the preggo scheme. And I hate to say it, but it’s inevitable. The truth will eventually come out that Annie killed that guy and she’ll totally get away with it in true 90210 fashion. Poor Annie, so distraught. Boo! she’s a bad actress!

    • Jackie

I’ve been thinking that all along. He’s only 17 right?

  • Jules

FANTASTIC re-cap! lol. And I really loved the episode. I didn’t want it to end!

    1. Jasper/Annie: Honestly, I just love this storyline. I find it so entertaining. Its so the Ray/Donna 2.0 storyline, haha. Love that Jasper is Adrianna’s drug dealer. Nice tie in. And I also think Jasper/Annie have this really weird/amazing chemistry!

    2. Navid/Adrianna: Love them. I kinda got teary eyed when Navid told her that he wasn’t her person anymore and then she just broke down even more. I’m glad they are taking a break though. Navid deserves better now. But I definitely want them back together by the end of the season!…And Adrianna back to drugs! Oh, oh, scandal. But I love it.

    3. Teddy/Silver: Its strange. But I really, really like them. Their interactions work. And the whole hair gel line was too cute. I still want Dixon/Silver though…but I wouldn’t mind Teddy/Silver for a bit.

    3. Liam/Ivy: I like them. I like Ivy A LOT more in this episode then the previous one. She needs to stop saying dude though. But, I am rooting for them.

    4. Dixon/Sasha: Glad that’s done with. Dixon needs better material to work with. And what kind of women tricks her teenage EX-lover by saying she is pregnant. Weirdo.

    5. Ryan/Jen: Could care less about them. But there little “fight” was priceless and cute.

    6. Finally….Debbie! LOVED her in this episode. Give Lori Laughlin more to work with people! She was fantastic and I was totally rooting for the whole episode.

    • Mary Q. Contrary

I agree. I think Annie and Jasper’s chemistry is amazing, and I’m crossing my fingers they’ll find room for him in the cast once their storyline is over.

  • thalia

last nights episode was great but i honestly don’t like this ivy chick, she is really lame and pointless to say the least. If she sticks around, I bet she will turn out a lesbian.

  • Zoe

I literally hate Jen…and not in a “love to hate way” although I would love to see that develop for the character. She just gets away with absolutely everything; we need to see a comeuppance and some humanity once in awhile, IMO. Please, Liam, please be building that Battlebot! :-)

Also, loved Debbie’s smackdown. But she could have EASILY come back with a statutory rape threat when Sasha said that the baby was none of Debbie’s business. (“Um, well, my son is a minor, so it kind of IS my business, you know?”)

    • Nicole

Haha!! If it is a Battlebot, I want credit for giving them the idea. :P
