Will you 'Dance' with Kathy Griffin?

I’ll admit it: I don’t particularly like to watch celebrities humiliate themselves on the dance floor. Instead, I prefer to watch real dancers who are 100 percent deserving of their screen time show audiences how it’s done. (Can I get a “what what,” fellow SYTYCD fans?)

That being said, I might just have to suck it up and tune into ABC’s Let’s Dance, a weekly dance-off featuring celebs performing classic dance routines from movies, musicals and music videos. Because, really, how is this not appealing? For one thing, who doesn’t like homages? And another bonus? The series is hosted by Kathy freaking Griffin. You know she’s not going to tread as carefully as Tom Bergeron when it comes to the contestants. (And that’s definitely a good thing.)

There is something that gives this dance lover pause, though. ABC claims the dances will be “comedic homage.” Okay, I’ll accept that if the celebrity contestants tackle, say, Britney Spears’ “Oops I Did It Again” or Duckie’s “Try a Little Tenderness” from Pretty in Pink, but if a Speidi-like celeb messes with my Gene Kelly, I’m officially placing this show on my F list.

Tell me, PopWatchers, how do you feel about this new series? And what dances would you like to see celebrities re-create? (Hello, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers‘ barn-raising scene!)

I would like to see either some Cell Block Tango or America from West Side Story.

The contestants will surely be more d list than DWTS, so I don’t think this will fly. Plus don’t they have to get rights to movies to show clips etc.. Kathy rules though, but many on mainstream networks will run away in droves because of her, esp. the geezer demographic these shows are famous for!

I do love Kathy…. so I’ll have to tune in.

  • Jennie

    Footloose. Someone must do Footloose.

Why Kathy Grifffin? I absolutely HATE her, and her irritating humor. I really don’t have any knowledge of “classic dance routines.” Will I be completely confused while watching?

Interesting. Will ABC let Kathy Griffin be Kathy Griffin? Doubtful. But if that’s the case, who the hell wants to see a PG-13 Griffin? I certainly don’t. I am intrigued as to how this will pan out…

Practically no one will understand this, but I want to see the Dream Ballet from Oklahoma! It’s got a great story and a fight, so it’d be cool to see the DeMille choreography reenacted.

Also: Turkey Lurkey Time. YouTube it (make sure it’s the Promises, Promises Tony version) if you don’t know what it is. It’s seriously the greatest thing ever.

    “What, What!”

Anyway, I’ll check out the first ep just to see how much abc will let Kathy get away with. If it’s even half of what she usually says, I’ll tune in just for her. Then I’ll close my eyes on the dance numbers!

    Yes!

I said this on the other post – ENOUGH WITH THE REALITY SHOWS!!! It is ridiculous. Just what we need more people we have never heard of (or as they call them “celebrities”)….how about more scripted shows that employ a ton of crew and cast – we need the jobs. ABC – keep making more great comedies – you have a great block of comedies now – keep it up.

As much as I imagine how fun it would be to watch Janet Jackson re-creating Cell Block Tango or Sarah Jessica Parker re-creating Can-Can from Moulin Rouge, I bet it is more likely we will get LaToya Jackson re-creating Maniac from Flashdance and Sarah Ferguson re-creating Britney’s baby, One More Time. As much as I love me some Kathy Griffin, I just know this is gonna be more train wreck and less hot tamale train.

What a terrible concept. Are you sure its on ABC… not NBC?!
