'Women in Trouble' trailer: Not your standard chick flick (see: porn star, call girls, and Josh Brolin)

The trailer for Women in Trouble, the Sebastian Gutierrez comedy following one day in the intersecting lives of 10 women in Los Angeles that won some fans at the SXSW Film Festival, debuted on the Web last night. Because they’ve got to keep the trailer G-rated, you get a bit of a Boys on the Side vibe. Check out this clip of Carla Gugino‘s pregnant porn star Elektra Luxx telling Connie Britton‘s slightly horrified woman trapped in an elevator with her about her, um, merchandising, and you get a better idea of what you’re dealing with. Also watch the clip of Elektra and Holly, a call girl played by Britton’s Friday Night Lights‘ co-star Adrianne Palicki, explaining why it’s not a chick flick after the jump.

Regardless, I’m curious to see which one of the ladies I’ll relate to most — will it be good or bad if it’s the 13-year-old? — and it’s nice to see a film about women score quality men in supporting roles (Josh Brolin, Simon Baker, Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Intrigued? And guys, are you convinced this is not just a standard chick flick?

Matthew Perry: Is this comedy his TV comeback?

Filed under: News, Television and tagged:

matthew-perry_lMatthew Perry is shopping a new single-camera comedy to the broadcast networks this week. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he plans to star in, co-write, and executive produce the untitled show about “a self-involved manager of a second-rate sports arena who begins to re-evaluate his life on his 40th birthday.” Perry, who recently turned 40, conceived the idea. (Which also explains why he was drawn to the Zac Efron do-over comedy 17 Again?) Does this sound like a pilot a network should greenlight? Before we take it to a vote after the jump, let’s break it down.

He’ll pen the pilot script with Alex Barnow and Marc Firek, a duo whose most recent credit is Fox’s ‘Til Death. Worrisome, but then again, last spring, Showtime passed on a pilot Perry had cowritten with the brilliant Peter Tolan (Rescue Me). He’ll share exec producing duties with Thomas Schlamme (Sports Night, The West Wing, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), who’ll also direct the pilot, and Jamie Tarses, the former network suit credited with developing Friends. Good. He’ll play that self-involved manager re-evaluating his life, which means mild misery and extreme sarcasm — excellent.

I’d greenlight it on one condition: he, his fellow writers and exec producers take Ron Shelton (Bull Durham and Tin Cup) to lunch to discuss the second-rate sports arena angle. If he’s game, I’d bring him on as a consultant. Your call? READ FULL STORY »

Which behind-the-scenes entertainers do you follow on Twitter?

modern-family-tweet_lYesterday’s feature from The Wrap, highlighting the 50 TV insiders you should be following on Twitter, provided some interesting food for thought. And while I can’t say that their list had a lot of overlap with my own personal “following” list, it did inspire me to sign up for feeds from several writer-producers including Cougar Town‘s Kevin Biegel (@kbiegel), The Vampire Diaries’ Kevin Williamson (@KevWilliamson) and Julie Plec (@julieplec), and The Office‘s Mindy Kaling (@mindykaling). Naturally, I already follow my colleague Michael Ausiello (@EWAusielloFiles), another member of The Wrap’s exclusive list, as well as several other behind-the-scenes folks they didn’t mention: Modern Family‘s Steven Levitan (@SteveLevitan), BSG/Caprica‘s Jane Espenson (@CapricaSeven), and the all-powerful @MarthaStewart, not to mention all my favorite former Idol contestants. And then I got curious about who my colleagues follow: My office next-door-neighbor Mike Bruno started keeping tabs on Jon Favreau (@Jon_Favreau) because of his excellent Tweets while filming Iron Man, while movie-loving Adam B. Vary tells me he follows “John August (@JohnAugust), who’s always sharp about the business of screenwriting; Elizabeth Banks (@ElizabethBanks), who’s just damn funny; and Ben Stiller (@RedHourBen) who only benefits from the Twitter format.” And because she revealed the TV show I watch when I’m tipseh, I am pleased to offer this exclusive scoop about Mandi Bierly’s “following” list (@EWMandiBierly), which includes J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling), Miranda Lambert (@Miranda_Lambert), Lie to Me/The Shield‘s Shawn Ryan (@ShawnRyanTV), Law & Order: SVU showrunner Neal Baer (@NealBaer), and Bones‘ head honcho Hart Hanson (@HartHanson), among others.

That’s a little sampling of the writers, producers, directors, and authors EW staffers keep up with on Twitter, and now it’s your turn. What behind-the-scenes folks in music, TV, movies, and books have can’t-miss Twitter feeds? Share your obsessions in the comments section below! 'Gossip Girl' recap: Rufus and Lily tie the knot...and gain a son

gossip-girl_dlBESF. Best. Episode. So. Far. Don’t you agree PopWatchers? This season has been a little spotty but last night’s Gossip Girl felt like old times. There was Blair bitchiness (my fave line of the evening: “Trust me Nate: I know women…and none of us are that nice.”). There was fabulous fashion (J’adored Serena’s dress at the wedding). And there was Dorota (her own wedding ensemble was genius—the woman should wear more large hats).

So it was definitely still the most entertaining GG this season…but, obvs, I still have some issues.

'Heroes' recap: Claire gets her girl on and Peter trips the light fantastic

Heroes-Claire-Kiss_lTwo things of note happened in “Hysterical Blindness,” this week’s edition of Heroes, and only one of ‘em was interesting: 1) Claire kissed a girl, and 2) We finally saw the Heroes version of Dazzler.

Claire kissed a girl. We don’t know if she liked it — and Claire and Gretchen were pulled away for sorority rush duties — but I do know that unless Heroes devotes some real story time to this plot thread, the whole stalkery-Gretchen-macking-on-Claire business will feel like a cheap and tawdry ratings stunt. Not to continue to invoke the hallowed name of Buffy, but the care with which Joss Whedon brought Willow into college life and then out of the closet is a good model to follow. I just hope Heroes doesn’t hastily retreat from homosexuality with the same clumsiness it’s cozied up to it. READ FULL STORY »

'Big Bang Theory': Raj, deported? Sheldon to the rescue!

Alas, filmmaker Chris Columbus does not appear to tweet (I checked), so we must for now remain bereft of his feelings concerning Leonard, Sheldon, Wolowitz, and Raj’s tradition of celebrating “Columbus” Day by watching the Columbus-penned generational touchstones GooniesGremlins, and Young Sherlock Holmes — probably the nicest Columbus Day joke ever made about the Home Alone director, in fact. (And yes, Young Sherlock Holmes is indeed a touchstone, if only because it is the first major motion picture to feature a character fashioned entirely via computer.) (Whoa, got a bit Sheldon up in here. Apologies.)

The holiday merriment was short-lived, unfortunately, after Raj broke down at the mere mention of the Wolowitz family’s traditional Thanksgiving turbriskefil, and it wasn’t because that’s a turkey stuffed with a brisket stuffed with gefilte fish. OK, it wasn’t just because of that unholy culinary trinity; he’s also in danger of being deported back to India.

EW Exclusive: A first look at the SpongeBob SquarePants wedding!

Admittedly, I don’t keep up with SpongeBob SquarePants the way I do with, say, Lost or Medium or Melrose Place. But this exclusive clip from Truth or Square, a one-hour special airing Nov. 6, 8:00 p.m. EDT, on Nickelodeon, has me wondering if maybe I should. I mean, seriously, SpongeBob getting married to Sandy? A primitive multicellular beastie betrothed to a squirrel? I can’t say I saw these nuptials coming!

Fortunately, a Nickelodeon publicist sent me a release putting the ceremony in context. Truth or Square — narrated by Ricky Gervais and featuring Rosario Dawson, Craig Ferguson, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, LeBron James, Pink, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and Robin Williams — will piece together never-before-seen flashbacks of SpongeBob and his pals after they get trapped inside Krusty Krab’s freezer during the restaurant’s “eleventy seventh” birthday. And apparently, the SpongeBob-Sandy ceremony is one of the Very Special Moments being revisited for the first time. Press play below for a glimpse of a moony-eyed SpongeBob in love. You may never look at Bikini Bottom the same way again.

'Twilight'-inspired fashion hits Nordstrom

New-Moon-fashion-twilight_lJust when you thought you couldn’t get any more deeply immersed in the Twilight saga, now you can proudly show off your love for Edward, Bella, Jacob and the rest of the crew with Nordstrom’s New Moon-inspired line, now available for pre-order.

The line, which features mostly tees, jewelry and makeup, has something for every fan — from the Twi-hards to the Twi-not-so-hards.

If you’re down for mushroom ravioli prom parties, you might like the “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob” tees cut in a style similar to what Bella might wear. Belong to a Twilight-related Facebook group? You can subtly sport your love in a plaid tunic inspired by Alice Cullen or a motorcycle pendant necklace, a nod to Jacob’s motorcycle and the one he fixes up for Bella.

And for the shyest of the bunch, there’s vampire-tinged makeup, like a “Just Bitten” lip staining balm and a “Mortal Glow” blush crème.

The lines skews (obviously) young, but, overall, the cheese factor is much lower than I expected. That is, until I saw the oddest items in the mix: the life-size cardboard cut-outs of Edward and Jacob. Maybe some girls would love coming home to a flattened Robert Pattison or Taylor Lautner. But I think that’s just plain creepy!

Apart from fashion, the site includes extras like videos, quizzes, downloads and a chance to win tickets to the New Moon premiere.

And if you’re itching for more fang-tastic fashion (sorry, I had to), you can also now pre-order Bella’s BB Dakota jacket at Fred Flare. Some of you probably remember when the jacket sold out in a flash only to be hawked on eBay at sky-high prices. Now’s your chance!

What do you guys think of the Nordstrom collection? What do you think of a line inspired by, not actually from, the movie?

The TV show you watch when you're tipsy?

Jenna-Elfman-Accidentaly_l-2A colleague who will only let me identify her as “M” just admitted that the Jenna Elfman sitcom Accidentally on Purpose is one of the shows she likes to watch when she’s been drinking. (Now sober, she just reenacted Elfman’s “My booty is delicious” dance, pictured, in my office — and insisted that David Sutcliffe, Gilmore Girls‘ Christopher last seen on The Practice, who guested on a recent episode, needs his own show: “He is cute. He is likable. He is cute. Like a slightly older Scott Speedman, who also deserves a show.”)

Which show you do enjoy watching more — or only, in the case of Accidentally on Purpose, which still isn’t doing Ashley Jensen justice — when you’ve been drinking? Slezak, always one to respond to a question if it involves booze, says: “Melrose Place definitely benefits from a couple cocktails…but I’ve also been known to watch it sober, if we happen to be going through the DVR backlog on a weekend morning.* If the husband isn’t with me and I’m half in the bag, the default position is automatically TVG. (If you don’t know what TVG is, you betta get an edge-ooh-caysh.)” Annie answers, “Yo Gabba Gabba!, Strangers With Candy, the ‘Spring Breakout’ episode of Arrested Development, and whatever is on Adult Swim.” Wendy Mitchell reluctantly admits to Bridezillas and Say Yes to the Dress. I feel less bad about myself for crying at Ghost Whisperer if I can blame it on a few mojitos.

Your turn. Name your tipsy TV choice.

Al Gore will answer your question until they kill the mic

Well, this is convenient: Philip McAleer, whose independent film purporting to explain “the true cost of global warming hysteria,” Not Evil, Just Wrong, releases this Friday, got to ask Al Gore about the inaccuracies of 2006′s An Inconvenient Truth at the Soceity of Environmental Journalists’ annual meeting in Madison, Wis. Would you have “killed the mic” on McAleer, too? Or perhaps you’d like to hear Gore answer more questions about his science? [via Columbia Journalism Review]

Science is annoying!
