The Weather Channel to show movies? Hail no!

Perfect-Storm-Clooney_dlOK, that’s it, I’m calling shenanigans. We’ve witnessed MTV stop really caring about music, VH1 abandon video hits, A&E decide to have nothing to do with Arts or (arguably) Entertainment, and TLC race as far and as fast as it can from programming that could cause anyone to actually learn anything. But this was the final straw: The Weather Channel announced today that it will air feature-length movies on Friday nights starting Oct. 30.

Yes, that’s right: The. WEATHER. Channel. Granted, the first movie on the docket, The Perfect Storm, is relatively appropriate, but then we’re gonna get March of the Penguins, Misery, and, I kid you not, Deep Blue Sea. All airing on the channel you go to when you want to know the weather. Worse yet, the network will still air the weekend forecast six times an hour during said movie, which is kind of like tuning into ESPN to watch Forrest Gump (there’s running!) with occasional updates on the big games. No. Wrong. SHENANIGANS.

Tell me, PopWatchers, am I crazy? Are you really eager to flip on your TV sets to catch Twister or Hard Rain edited for time, content, and alerts every ten minutes on actual tornadoes and thunderstorms? Or do we all agree to take a stand, here and now, against so many of our beloved basic cable networks all congealing into variations on two basic themes: The Movie and TV Rerun Network or The Deeply Depressing Cheap-o Reality TV Network? Who’s with me?

'X Factor': Oops!...I can't look away from this train wreck

What is going on across the pond on The X Factor?! Simon Cowell’s UK Idol-esque hit already raised eyebrows when judge Dannii Minogue kinda sorta outed contestant Danyl Johnson, and on last week’s show, the twin act known as John & Edward performed a direct homage to Britney Spears’ “Oops!…I Did It Again” video that was…well…you’ll have to see it to believe it. If you can, keep watching at least to the 1:00 mark, when things get really, really creepy:

Vic Mizzy: Pay tribute to the man behind the 'Addams Family' snaps

Categories: In Memoriam, Television

Thanks in large part to Nick at Nite, practically everyone over 25 can quickly conjure the iconic theme songs for 1960s TV series The Addams Family and Green Acres, and that is the deeply impressive legacy of composer Vic Mizzy, who died of heart failure yesterday at 93. Much like his snazzy, jazzy name, Mizzy established the bright, percussive, lyrically clever, and insanely catchy template for TV theme songs that remains relevant decades later, from The Brady Bunch and Gilligan’s Island on through to CheersFriends, and The Big Bang Theory. Embedded below is the snappy Addams Family theme performed by Mizzy himself, and after the jump I’ve embedded the Green Acres tune, featuring some rather adventurous “singing” from star Eva Gabor.

Barnes and Noble's e-reader: The Nook

nook_lBarnes & Noble’s e-reader is finally here: Behold the Nook and its dual screens. Pretty! At $259, it’s on pace with Kindle, and it uses a color touch screen at the bottom instead of Kindle’s keypad. Best sellers and new releases are $9.99, but the big change — and what distinguishes the Nook from its e-brethren — seems to be that you can “lend” your e-books to your friends for up to 14 days. Not just Nook-to-Nook, either: According to the site, Nookies will be able to “lend to and from any iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, PC, or Mac, with the free Barnes and Noble eReader software downloaded on it.” That’s a horse of a different color.

Does sharing mean caring you’d opt for a Nook over its competitors, PopWatchers?

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: 'Law and Order' or high and mighty?

Categories: Beat Cop, Castle, House, TV Recap

Law & Order is touchy. Maybe it’s age—after all the show is an admirably ancient 20 years old, which in TVworld means Willard Scott should’ve offered them congratulations about five seasons back. But this past episode had the reigning Queen Mum of procedurals wagging a bony finger in all sorts of directions, including—perhaps unwittingly—its own. READ FULL STORY »

Bill Murray says 'Charlie's Angels' director 'deserves to die'

In an interview with the Times of London, Bill Murray excitedly discussed his new film, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and also revisited some less-than-happy memories of movies past. After raving about his Mr. Fox director, Wes Anderson, Murray was asked about some other directors he had worked with over the years. And when the conversation circled around to his Charlie’s Angels director, McG, the funnyman went to a very dark place.

When asked about McG’s recent claim that Murray had head-butted him on the set of 2000′s Charlie’s Angels during a creative flair-up, Murray replied, “That’s bulls—! That’s complete crap!” The 59-year-old actor then added, “I don’t know why he made that story up. He has a very active imagination…No! He deserves to die!” Then Murray gets specific (and creative) as to how McG should, in fact, meet his demise. “He should be pierced with a lance, not head-butted.”

Whether or not the head-butt incident did go down as McG claimed, the article cites another incident during the making of the film, where Murray got into a tiff with costar Lucy Liu, allegedly telling her that she couldn’t act while she also allegedly threw punches in return. Murray tries to explain the spat in the Times article, saying, “Look, I will dismiss you completely if you are unprofessional and working with me…When our relationship is professional, and you’re not getting that done, forget it.”

Halloween '09: Keep uploading your hilarious pop culture costumes to our Facebook page

facebook_popwatch_halloweenThanks to all of you who’ve sent in your pop culture-related Halloween costumes for inclusion in our Best Costumes roundup the week before Halloween. (Here’s last year’s gallery.) To achieve eternal fame, upload photos of your pop culture-related Halloween costumes to Entertainment Weekly’s Facebook page. Just click “add photo” on our wall and your image will appear in the Just Fans section. I just spent a decent chunk of time telling Facebook I “liked” certain things, which does not mean I dislike the others. I mean honestly where do you even stop with that? I love all of them! Juno and Bleeker, Robin Sparkles, The Dark Knight, Dr. Horrible, and Saved by the Bell were all popular with our readers in ’08, and the corporate settings behind characters like the SpongeBob crew and Princess Leia will crack you up. Powdered Toast Man from Ren & Stimpy, Rose from Dr. Who, and Matt Roloff from Little People, Big World are simply inspired. There’s even a Peggy Olson, a Kool-Aid Man/mom, and a Dumbo in a dorm room!

So stop by the EW Facebook lounge, take  a look around, upload some costume photos, and while you’re there, be sure to “become a fan” of Entertainment Weekly. You’ll be rewarded with the EW extras we’re cooking up for our growing Facebook page, like upcoming bonus video footage, contests, games…not to mention that we’d just really appreciate it. That’s it! And for the last time, elderly supply teacher, just because Amy looks pregnant for Halloween does NOT mean she’s pregnant. Party on.

'30 Rock' porn ignores actual '30 Rock' porn

Categories: 30 Rock, Nudity

Thanks to VH1, the intersection between “mainstream” and “adult” entertainment has never been more front-and-center, but I was still a liiiittle surprised that adult film star Savanna Samson has a guest role on 30 Rock this week as “Porn Liz.” (Samson’s previous credits include a Daily Show segment, “Daily Show Nights,” and, you know, actual adult films.) It’s not that the XXX bugs me or anything. It’s that 30 Rock didn’t use the cast from the actual 30 Rock porn! Come on! The completely safe-for-work trailer demonstrates the cast’s more than adequate skills: READ FULL STORY »

Emma Stone's 'Zombieland' boots: Style Hunter tracked 'em down

If you’re going to be fighting zombies, you’d better have the right wardrobe to withstand the rough and tumble. Lucky for Emma Stone, her fashion in Zombieland is durable and fashionable.

Though Stone’s were roughed up a bit to give them that worn-in look, you can still get her “Castalina” boots by Bandolino — now on sale — at bandolino.com ($119.20).

Apple's new Magic Mouse: Abracadabra?

Apple announced its new “Magic Mouse” today, a multitouch wireless mouse that uses “intuitive gestures” for scrolling and surfing, in addition to traditional clicking action.

I’ve been burned before on Mac mice before — you haunt me, hockey puck! — and $69 isn’t exactly pizza money. I’m weirdly attached to the mechanical clicks the scrollwheel on my current mouse makes (you can feel it working!), and mouse-motion is such muscle memory I feel like changing things up would be like suddenly wearing my watch on the other wrist: Sure, I’d get used to it eventually, but it would always be a little bit off. Perhaps this is why I’m still such a keyboard commands person….

Do you believe in magic (mouse), PopWatchers?
