John Lennon biopic 'Nowhere Boy': Buzzy, but not Beatles-y

Can you make a John Lennon biopic without any Beatles songs? Apparently. Sam Taylor Wood’s Nowhere Boy, which focuses on John’s childhood, does just that, and early buzz is that it’s great.

Star Aaron Johnson doesn’t look much like Lennon, but even weirder? The guy playing Paul is the little kid (now all grown up) from Love, Actually. I am so, so very old.

I’ve been an Anne-Marie “Mrs. James McAvoy” Duff fan since her days on Shameless, so even though this trailer doesn’t quite set my soul on fire, I’m holding out hope for the film.

What about you, PopWatchers?

I just read a biography of John that focused half the book on his childhood which I didn’t know much about. Watching this trailer brought everything I imagined to life – Kristin Scott Thomas as his aunt and *GASP* “Love, Actually” kid as Paul? I thought he looked familiar but now I just feel sooo old. Can’t wait to see this :)

Funny to think that John and his “little friend” grew up to be the biggest songwriters in popular music history!
I like the look of this.

I’m younger than the Love. Actually kid and seeing him as a teenager still made me feel old! This looks incredible, I just keep picturing this John with a full on beard, and I’m failing

Looks cool. Hopefully it isn’t a disappointment like many other movies this year.

Well, if nothing else, it’s got an effective trailer. I’m definitely interested in seeing it, and I’m not much of a Beatles fan.

Love Actually kid is actually kind of amazing. He was in one of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who and on that performance I have a lot of hopes for him.

I should really look up his name

As a die-hard Beatles fan, I can’t say that I’m greatly interested in it. Could they not get anybody that actually looked more like John? I liked this move when it was called Backbeat.

It shouldn’t really be too much of a problem that The Beatles’ music isn’t in it. This film deals with Lennon’s early life and the formation of the group, and they played mostly cover versions up until 1962 anyway.

Not sure about this. John’s character in the trailer seems a little soft and wimpy, and that’s one thing Lennon as a a youth never was. And Paul’s character should be more baby faced and chubbier (like Paul was at that age); the actor isn’t nearly as beautiful as Paul was. It’s always hard to get past the physical differences.

I also wish they’d make a decent movie that tells the Beatles early story — all of the Beatles. Not yet another movie like this one that focuses on John.

    This looks pretty great.

Isn’t the Love Actually kid Hugh Grant’s nephew?

    • marie98

The little kid is actually Hugh Grant’s cousin. His grandmother and Hugh’s mother were sisters

It’s a good story. The movie could definitely stand on its own without the music or stunt casting. On a superficial level, I don’t know about John being that much cuter than Paul. Looks and popularity had a lot to do with their relationship.
As for feeling old. Wait until the babies you know now start high school. Then you’ll really feel old.

I am so looking forward to this movie.I love British cinema. The trailer was fantastic. I love Anne-Marie Duff and Kristen Scott-Thomas in anything they are in. The young actor playing John Lennon looks excellent in the trailer. I plan to see this film when it is released in the US.

There’s also a new biography of John Lennon out, though it covers mostly his later life. It’s called The Cynical Idealist: A Spiritual Biography of John Lennon, by Gary Tillery.

i did not notice there wasn’t any Beatles music, and (obviously) I’m not really a Beatles fan, but I thought it looked really interesting.
