No sarcasm in the headline there, as I always want to watch another show about cake…but will the digestive traffic jam of competitive cooking shows based on carbs you’ll never get to eat (like Bryan’s chocolate ganache on last week’s Top Chef, pictured) ever end? Today Bravo announced a Top Chef spinoff to air sometime in 2010, Top Chef: Just Desserts. This follows last Thursday’s news of a second season of Top Chef Masters. It remains to be seen if Padma Lakshimi will host Just Desserts — my top choice at this point is Judge Reinhold, who can play off the “Just” part of the title because his name is Judge. No-sugar pre-season diet starts now, Judge!
Dessert challenges are often the ones that trip even the best Top Chef contestants up, but is there room for another dessert series amidst the fondant-lined wonderland of the Food Network’s Ace of Cakes, TLC’s Cake Boss and Ultimate Cake Off, and WeTV’s Amazing Wedding Cakes and Wedding Cake Wars, not to mention Top Chef Masters, The Next Food Network Star, The Next Iron Chef, Chopped, etc.? Has Top Chef and/or dessert reality series fatigue settled in for you yet, P-Dubs? Would anyone prefer commenter darclyte’s suggestion for a Top Chef: Mixology over Top Chef: Just Desserts?

I would totally watch this.
“My Name is Judge” – Arrested Development
LOL!
I would watch it. woo desserts.
I’ll watch any variety of Top Chef I can get!
I worked at a dessert-centered restaurant – there’s a LOT that goes into the thought of good dessert dishes — and it’s NOT just cake! I would gladly watch one of these – it’s always funny to see Top Chef contestants practically have nervous breakdowns when met with desserts — even one Top Chef Master could only come up with chocolate dipped things… I’d love to see the creativity. It’s not just cake!!
Y’know, as long as it’s not JUST cake? I’d be good with it.
I’d definitely watch! I love pastry chef competitions!
I LOVE this idea, and I’m not a big cake show person… But just thinking of all the challenges they could have is making me really hungry! They could have an ice cream challenge and a souffle challenge and a cake challenge and a pie challenge and a tart challenge and a… I don’t even know. Sign me up!
As long as they have at least one fondant-free challenge. I hate fondant.
Exactly. It is an awful crutch. Fondant on a cake is like Bondo on a car. In most of these cake show challenges, each cake is literally draped in fondant, which brings nothing to the flavor of the cake, and exists solely as a sculpting agent. At what point does the cake cease to be a cake, and instead become a piece of pottery?
I’d watch. I love Top Chef–and I have no fatigue from watching anything else, because the shows on the Food Network don’t interest me whatsoever. So this would be my first foray into the strictly dessert category.
Of course we would watch any dessert cooking competition reality show series. Cause why not? If people can watch “Plus or Minus Jon & Kate Plus 8″; The Biggest Loser etc, why can’t we watch a show about what people fantasize about – DESSERT!
I would probably watch this but I’m not sure……it depends on how its set up. I LOVE Top Chef but I only liked Top Chef: Masters, I’d probably watch Top Chef: Just Desserts but wouldn’t go out of my way to do so
yes yes yesssssssssssssssss! I’ll have seconds of that!
Count me in. The only food show I watch is Top Chef, if you watch the best, why bother with the rest?
I would totally watch it; especially if each show had a bavarian cream category!
Mmmmf. Bavarian cream.
