Is Mad Max finally about to go beyond Beyond Thunderdome? Though the fourth film in the post-apocalyptic action flick series has endured decades of delays, reports suggest that pre-production on Mad Max 4: Fury Road is about to get started in Australia. All kinds of casting rumors are flying, with Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation) and Charlize Theron both tipped for key roles…
But hold on a sec. Here comes director George Miller to throw some cold water on that speculation. “I’m still in the middle of casting, despite all we see on the Net,” Miller says in the behind-the-scenes interview embedded below (via Comingsoon.net). “I don’t even know who the final cast’s going to be.” Fine. Let’s forget Worthington and Theron for the moment — what does that mean for the original Max himself, Mel Gibson? Asked by a reporter if Gibson is an option, Miller coyly replies, “Everyone’s an option.”
Hard to know what to make of that. Watch the interview below, then weigh in. Do you even care whether or not Mel Gibson winds up in the cast of Mad Max 4? Would his absence be a deal-breaker for you? How many of you are still looking forward to this long-awaited four-quel, anyway?

I’m still pushing for New Zealand heartthrob Craig Parker to be in this!
Hi,do you need any cars made for the movie? I’m currently building a Mad Max coupe and could build more.Mel Gibson must be in the movie.
I would prefer to have Mel in this, even if it’s in a small part. The movie could open with an older Mel being tracked down by a new group of badasses…so badass that they kill our beloved hero before the opening credits even start. I think it could add a nice ominous element to the movie.
has to be Mel Gibson, no point otherwise. Be nice to see what happened to him after thunderdome…
Mel Gibson needs to be in it for me to go see any Mad Max movie
I would love to see Mel in it. Most of all get real cars to do real stunts!! No CGI crap. That is what I liked about the other shows.
Yes, he may be a wacko d-bag, but Mel Gibson is Mad Max, and to make a Mad Max without him is like making a Terminator without Arnie. It could work, but it doesn’t mean it will be good.
It would be cool to see how the future has progressed since the last movie and Mel would be good as the aged road warrior in a newly awakened civilization.
WHile I can’t stand him much nowadays, Gibson is essential to the series and the 4th movie without him will be a failure before it even has a chance.
The first two Mad Max movies are some of my all-time favorites. To not have Mel (despite all of his troubles) in a Mad Max movie would be pointless. Mel is Max. Just like Bruce Willis is John McClane or Harrison Ford is Indy. Even if Mel is only there in a minor role, he needs to be there to connect MM4 to the series. In watching that clip of Miller, my fear is that all of the pre-production time is being spent on building vehicles and coming up with stunts instead of crafting a script that makes us want to re-visit this world and its characters.
I could see a grisled, Mad Max. That would be cool.
To recast the part would be ridiculous unless this were a “reboot” or a remake.
It was too “happy”, with the kids and all. It was like Miller was looking for Spielberg’s approval.
He needs to keep Mad Max hardcore!
I’d only watch it if Gyro Captain had a cameo.
Come on, Mel, would you please consider change your mind and take part in this movie? Pleeeese?
How can we see Max if you are not there?
Maybe a Fury Road with Mel?? OH! Too good. Let it be so! Without Mel, there is no Mad Max on Fury Road. Without Mel, regardless of who is cast, I will not see it.
Really?Mad Max part 4?When does Production Begin?
MEL GIBSON IS THE ONLY MAX!!!!!!
Wow, folks mentioned Gyro dude (Bruce Spence) and Craig Parker, who both are in Legend of the Seeker now, except CP’s villian got killed off so, hmmm, Darken Rahl in Mad Max. Maybe not AS Max, but certainly in this type of film. Yeah, that would be cool.
