'Party Down': Kristen Bell, Jane Lynch, and the funniest show you've never seen

I’m glad everyone’s loving Jane Lynch on Glee. Really. But if you think she’s good on that show, check her out on Party Down, the under-the-radar comedy on Starz that I am obsessed with. And now, good news! Lynch and Kristen Bell will both appear on the second season of show, which starts in April. Holla!

For the uninitiated, Party Down is Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas’ series about LA cater-waiters. And Party Down is to workplace comedies what VM was to high school shows: A clever and distinct character-driven take on a sometimes hokey genre. Also, it is awesome, and I have watched the first season four times through. Four times! I am a crazy person. The DVDs aren’t out yet, but the whole season is available on instant Netflix and on Starz On Demand.

The combo of Adam Scott (previously), Ken Marino, Ryan Hansen, Lizzy Caplan, and Martin Starr positively slays me, and the banter is as weird and amazing as anything on 30 Rock.

PopWatchers, do you Party Down? How can I convince you to do so?

I absolutely love this show. Totally underrated and extremely hysterical. I love how politically incorrect it is, and being on Starz, it is pretty raw. Love it.

I’m not sure if I saw it correctly or not but wasn’t there a Party Down sighting in Greek this season?

    • Lucy Greene

Yes, there totally was! I was surprised that anyone else caught that and I also thought it was hilarious. Greek definitely does use a lot of pop culture references so the Party Down catering place where they work is not a surprise. Also, the outfit that Lana and Evan and Cappie all wear when working at the catering place is definitely the same outfit.

I totally saw that! Way for “Greek” to be the most pop culture relevant show on TV today. Kind of love the fact that the little-ABC-family-show-that-could is so extremely delightful, and the fact that they referenced, arguably, one of the best comedies ever made, makes the show even more awesome!

I saw that, too. But I never dared to dream they were related! I love both of these shows so much.

I am so glad someone else loves this show as much as me. Paul Rudd is also involved, which is just the “cherry on top” of a great show.

I thought I was a huge fan when I enthusiastically watched the season for a third time the other week. It gets better with each viewing and you will be happy to hear I’ve been getting all my friends into it as well and most seem to enjoy it. Hopefully it will get the attention it deserves come April!

    i love this show!

LOVE LOVE LOVE PD! Actually, I miss Head Case AND Party Down and cannot wait for both to come back on! (Just an FYI, Party Down is shown in order and unedited on Netflix, but Head Case is edited and often out of sequence order. Watch Head Case on Starz, it sucks on Netflix)

Seriously, this is the funniest show on TV. There hasn’t been a show since AD that made me laugh as hard and as often. Excited that Lynch will be back – I thought she was gone to ‘Glee’ for good.

Absolutely love this show. It’s just full of funny, sweet, raunchy craziness. The characters are all great. Looking forward to season 2!

Actually, I have seen it and was totally unimpressed. I was pretty disappointed, too, after all the positive reviews. That’ll teach me to go into something with expectations above rock bottom.

Did you only watch the first one or two episodes? Because it didn’t really pick up until the fourth or fifth episode of season one, though I admit I enjoyed two and three as well. Only the pilot was a bit of a letdown.

Supporting characters are fabulous in this…the lead is who really bothers me. Hard to watch a show when I don’t find the lead compelling. But will try to give Season 1 another viewing especially now that KB will be on.

Mmm…I think he’s really cute, so that helps. :0)

I just heard about the show today when I read that Kristen Bell and Jane lynch are back for more. I did some investigating and found that I should definitely watch this show. Now I only need to find the time XD

Love the show, but what’s the hold up with the DVDs? I keep recommending the series to friends, and they have no way to watch it.

  • PMD

This show is amazing!!! I became obsessed with Veronica Mars and Kristen Bell this summer which is how I stumbled upon this treasure of a show!!! I forced my good friend to watch it just so I could have someone to quote and discuss with! She loved it!!! It reminded me of Arrested Development!

I caught up with in on netflix on demand… so funny! I even delayed putting my netflix account on hold until the season was over… that’s how hilarious it was.

Just this morning, I was thinking about this show and worrying that no news meant it wasn’t coming back. I think Ken Marino really makes the show!
