Gaffe track: MSNBC anchor misidentifies Jesse Jackson

Categories: Current Affairs

MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer scored one for her blooper reel yesterday when she accidentally introduced the Reverend Jesse Jackson as the Reverend Al Sharpton — and didn’t realize it until he politely corrected her. AWKWARD. Points to Jackson for handling it smoothly. Check out the clip below.

Okay, but they are basically the same person…

    • Jim

Two slightly different kinds of crazy. Kind of like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity.

    • sharon

same color not same person i guess i can say you and the grandmarshall of the KKK is the same person

      • mscisluv

See below – they are very similar in what they do and their goals. I’ll let the half of my family that wasn’t killed in the Holocaust that I am apparently a member of the KKK for realizing that both Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are crazies who just want attention, and use the exact same means to get it.

      • Ama

Calm down. I think the point is that they basically do the same thing. You are the one who brought race into it.

    • bedc01

      Because they’re both black right?

      • Ben

Um, no Captain PC. It’s because they are both race mongers and have “Reverend” in their name.

    • Katja

I knew exactly what you meant. I think of them as being almost interchangeable too, and not because they’re both black and I think all black people look alike or whatever ridiculousness people are accusing you of…but because of what you and Gabby said – they play the race card constantly, whether or not it’s relevant or helpful, and consistently try to claim people’s civil rights are being violated. Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren’t. They’re like PETA to me – if they’d tone it down and be more rational, I would totally be on board with them. But very often I have a hard time taking them seriously because they’ve cried “wolf” a few too many times.

    • Isembard

True, both annoying media whores with no discernable skills, talents, or value except to pretend that they represent an entire population of people.

  • fancypants

they are NOT basically the same person. what an ignorant thing to say. not all black people look alike and Sharpton and Jackson look nothing alike, except for both being male and having black skin.

    • B

I don’t think it was a comment about the two men being black. It was a political statement.

      • mscisluv

Thank you, B – it was absolutely a political statement. They are both preachers who use “civil rights” as a guise to get media attention and use the race card whether or not it is relevant.

      • fancypants

well, it was an unintelligent “political statement”. so maybe you should stop making them since you’re not saying anything enlightening.

  • PeterBilt The Nature Boy

Brewer used to be on here in Milwaukee and was pretty weak, no idea how she got on msnbc

    • Ben

…seriously? MSNBC also employs that smug, fat-headed shrill harpy, Keith Olbermann. Did you think this was a network that prided itself on the high standards of its on-air personalities?

  • Gabby

“well, it was an unintelligent “political statement”.”

Not really. Both of those men are seriously used interchangeably so often on cable news that it’s a wonder this hasn’t happened before…I’d get them mixed up too – they’re both race baiting, media whore “reverends.”

  • Shamrock

Gee, people using the race card. Shocker. Way to overread into things.

  • hmm

I think it’s the same as interchanging Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh. Race is not a part of the comparison.

  • TJ

Black people are more racist than white people anyway.

    • gwld

      idiot

    • fancypants

you’re not black. so how would you know? reverse racism is such BS. white racists need to come up with something for modern times i guess.

  • bedc01

@mscisluv: kinda like glen beck and bill o’reilly right? Both also play the race card and are media whores

    • mscisluv

Actually, yes – exactly like Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly. Carbon copies with the same motivations who use race, religion, etc to get an unnecessary message out to the world.

  • wp2012

Mscisluv is right.. you can’t tell those two blacks apart. And yes, the blacks are more racist.. and so are the illegal immigrants that bring their disease and filth to this country.. I can’t wait for sarah palin to take over the white house. She will clean up house for good

    • Ama

You are just plain stupid, just like Palin. Racist Hypocrite.

  • bedc01

Well that’s just plain offensive isn’t?

  • Eric

I think it should be noted that one cannot be “a reverend,” as it’s an adjective.

  • Fatima

Sometimes I just shudder when I read headlines knowing what the comments will be like. This was one of them.

  • Ramo

CB is an idiot, but it’s easy to see why she was confused. Jackson and Sharpton are nothing but race mongers at this point. They’ve become caricatures of themselves. They jump on any opportunity to play the race card in order to advance their own agendas.

  • Julie

    MSNBC credibility takes another hit.

  • Sandy

“Now who’s the racist?” shouts Fox to MSNBC.

  • Wing

Side note: those guys are really watering down the term “Reverend.”

  • Look it Up

    @ Eric:
Sorry, hon, it’s an adjective AND a noun.

  • gwld

ew, i don’t even know why you bother posting things like this. it brings out the reverse-race mongers in droves—you know the ones who actually believe that rush limbaugh and glenn beck are somehow “disadvantaged” and that obama becoing president somehow signals the destruction of the good old boy network that they someday wish to be a part of? beleive me folks, no one is threating the dominance of the white male in american society. take a look at the senate and the ceos of fortune 500 companies if you don’t believe me and find something constructive to rant and rave about.

    • Fatima

      I like you.

      • Jen Jen

I second that emotion. Can I also ask everybody to visit the dictionary and look up the word racism?

  • Jen

Yikes- that is beyond gaffe. Oh and here:
    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/reverend
    There- now calm down.

  • Isembard

Amazing how many closet racists there are who consider any comparison or clumping-together of any two black people to be racist. For pity’s sake, had the joke been made that the equally annoying Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan were interchangable, would there have been outcries of racism because they’re both young, white girls? When two people assume the same public role, have the same views, are often seen together, same the same things, etc., it’s logical (and amusing) to call them interchangable. Unless, according to some dimwits, they happen to be of African descent?

    • fancypants

“Amazing how many closet racists there are who consider any comparison or clumping-together of any two black people to be racist.”
this statement makes absolutely NO sense.
      FAIL.

    • Fatima

What the hell are you talking about?

  • Jed

More nonsense from an NBC-owned station that nobody ever watches.
