I am not a big fan of Hilary Swank. She should consider herself lucky to have 2 Oscars, when more deserving actresses such as Julianne Moore and Annette Bening have none.
The only reason I would go see it is for the luscious Ewan McGregor.
Hey Crispy its interesting you mentioned Annette Bening. Both of Hilary’s wins came at Annette’s expense. The first time Hilary was in the “art-house” movie against the big studio project and the second time it was exactly the opposite, with Hilary winning both times.
I saw it in a pre-screening.. It was incredible. I love it. It was beautiful and I plan on seeing it again. And buying it on DVD when it come out!!! Sure you know how it ends, but they skip the tragedy and don’t try to speculate. It is just a beautiful and sad ending. Just like her life.
Hilary Swank. Meh.
Saw Swank on Leno last PM,and am getting so sick of this “I rose from a trailer park to the big-time” theme- like living in a trailer park is the biggest tragedy
in the world-I’m sure people who
do live in them hate her by now! Also, she’s obviously out for a 3rd Oscar-hope she doesn’t get it-something about her just puts me off.
I heard on the radio this morning that the movie was not prescreened, which in the critic’s words meant that the studios don’t want any bad reviews before a nationwide release. Regardless, there is something about Hilary Swank that doesn’t sit right with me. Don’t get me wrong, she is a talented actress, I just don’t care for her. Maybe it’s the 90210 connection… And Richard Gere runs hot and cold, too.
Its because it has Richard Gere in it. That man is insufferable and its a shame. Plus how old is he versus Heeeeelary Swank (I prefer the Roberto Begnini pronunciation). I think she is a phenomenal actress.
I’m a big fan of “Oscar-type” movies, but after seeing the preview, it looks like one of HBO’s prestige movies that I’ll watch but just can’t get into. So, I’ll wait til this hits HBO, then I’ll watch and soon forget about it.
the trailer looked at least moderately lively & exciting. i’ll want to see this one on the big screen, i’ve loved other mira nair films and i love ewan macgregor, and hilary swank is a good little actress. (very good)
richard gere looks handsome and convincing in this, from what i saw. he seemed impassioned about his part. this film seems rather feminist oriented, which i like. swank looks prettier with longer hair, at first glance. but she too seems excited about her role as the famous flyer, she looked like she was getting into it. ewan looked so charming (sigh). he strikes me as a bit like cary grant in the charm department.
there is something dishonest about hilary swank. plus she tries too hard. watching her has become tiresome.
also, it’s quite a dramatic, romantic tragedy, this story. triumphant and then devastating, which is interesting, and very dramatic and cinematic. compared to cinema classics of hollywood’s golden age it will fall short, but many contemporary movies do.
I was o.k. with the technical aspects of the movie until the ridiculous portrail of the Navy or Coast Guard crews at the end. NO ONE WEARS DRESS WHITES at sea; just doesn’t happen. They also had the uniforms wrong for the 1930s. A Navy boot should have been consulted.
Other than that one “glitch”, I thought is was a wonderful portrail of Amelia.
