Why don’t you want to see Amelia? It stars a two-time Oscar winner in a role that seems right in her wheelhouse. It’s helmed by a talented female director and features a recognizable supporting cast of handsome faces. But according to a poll at Box Office Mojo, only 6 percent of people intend to see the film this weekend and 43 percent have no intention of EVER seeing it! Really? Ever?
I acknowledge that the film’s initial trailer was littered with trite dialogue, but three new online clips (embedded below) hint of a sweet love story and Amelia Earhart’s joie de vivre. Maybe these sneak-peeks can puncture the inexplicable negativity surrounding this film?
Why do you think people have such little interest in Amelia? Is this a reflection of folks’ impressions of Hilary Swank, and if so, what’s yer beef? After a long summer of mindless blockbusters, I’d think most people would be looking forward to the first wave of Oscar hopefuls. Or at least more than 6 percent. Please explain.

Well, as my husband put it – “You know how it ends.”
We knew how Titanic ended too…
You almost know how every movie ends. You know the end of every romantic comedy, but people storm to the theatre for that.
I’m seeing Amelia. It looks good.
Yeah, don’t get me wrong, I love Hilary Swank but we all know the ending. I hate seeing movies when I know exactly who dies. And for Titanic, we didn’t know exactly who died because there were plenty of characters. As for those romantic comedies, I personally don’t spend 10 bucks to see the same ending over and over. Those are rentals.
no you don’t they never found her plane….she will probaly be on Lost this season..
LMAO!
Oh Smokey!! you had me rolling on the floor with that one….. too funny and almost a reason to watch lost again…..almost.
As for the movie Amelia, I’m shocked people don’t care to see it, I’m part of that 6%, there’s nothing that gets between me and some Ewan Mcgregor/Hilary/Richard/Mira combo.
Biopics must be put to a stop, they all are boring, especially anyone realted to the music or artistic fields, they all have a story of rise from a humble beginning, a drug addiction begins, meets significant other, drug addiction overwhelms, requisite montage of artisit getting clean, reconciles with who he/she is, and end the film with a recreation of a famous event in their life. THEY ALL STINK – Ray, Walk the Line, etc.
Thank you! Biopics drive me insane, especially when they win Oscars. Although I throughly enjoyed the fake biopic, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
If “Cadillac Records” is a “BIOPIC”
then biopics as a whole shouldn’t be stopped , and btw I’M SOMEONE WHO LOVED “RAY” SO TAKE THAT PILL FIRST… THAT WAS A GREAT JOURNEY TO WATCH. AND I EAGERLY AWAIT THE “JIMI HENDRIX” BIOPIC AND WE ALL KNOW HE VOMITS HIMSELF TO DEATH , SO FLIK’N WHAT THERE’S ALOTTA NOOKS AND CRANNIES IN BIOPIX THAT YOU CAN’T KNOW ABOUT NOT HAVING DONE ENOUGH RESEARCH OR READ ENOUGH BOOKS THAT FILM SEEMS TO REPRESENT WAY THE FLIK BETTER ANYHOW. SO , I’M SORRY BUT YER WRONG CUZ YOU CAN’T JUDGE BY THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ENDING , CHRIST… AND YOU , MR. OR MS. 166 IQ… WATCHING ETTA JAMES AND MUDDY WATERS TWO OF AMERICA’S GREATEST ARTISTS ALONG W/ RAY FINALLY GET ALL THREE OF THEIR “IMPORTANT HISTORY LESSON” STORIES UP ON THE BIG SCREEN FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO WESTERN CIVILIZATIONS ONLY GREAT MUSIC “THE BLUES” , AND IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ROCK , METAL , HIP HOP , ETC ETC.
EET THAT… PHHH “SNOTTIEST HAHVAHD GRAD VOICE EVA” : “I PAHK MY CAH IN THA HAVAHD YAHD DAHHLIN AHND I HAVA HUN-DRED AND SIXDEE-SIX I Q.
WHAHT IS YOUUURS”
It’s about her journey, not the ending. If not for Hillary Swank, who is a fantastic actress, I’ll certainly enjoy looking at the men in the cast and the scenery on the big screen. Lighten up, people.
Isn’t this the 900th Amelia Earhart movie? I’ll go and see an Amelia movie when they find out what happened to her. Until then, it’s the same ending…
The cinematography looks gorgeous, but all-in-all there’s something about the lack of spontaneity of biopics that turns me off. I doubt I’ll see Amelia.
I love Hilary Swank, and she’s a phenomenal actress. But I’m not seeing Amelia because it looks generic. No real wow or spark to it. The trailers are dull, the clips are dull, it’s just dull. I’ll see it on DVD, but for me, it’s not worth going to the theaters to see it.
I agree. ho’hum.
Yeah, this^^^
I know I shouldn’t be admitting this, but I don’t care for a lot of the “Oscar bait” movies. I like movies with an interesting plot, and the majority of those “artsy” movies is about slow character development. (I really wish I could get the time of my life that I spent watching The Hours back!)
I know that there is an audience for these kinds of movies. I also know that they are going to be the kinds of movies that will win the awards. I just also know (after trying many, many times) that I don’t like them and I won’t spend my money to watch them.
Oh, and to the person who put in the dig about people not wanting to watch the movie having low IQs, mine is 166. What’s yours?
166. Ha ha ha ha ha.
I agree with Meredith44, this movie is obviously made for the Oscars and I can’t stand such films: everything just comes off as pretentious. Look at Christoph Waltz: I’m sure when he signed on to do “Inglourious Basterds” he wasn’t thinking about the Academy Awards, but now there is a lot of Oscar buzz around his name. That’s how it should be folks: tell a good story and let the chips fall where they may
I’m on board with being bored with Oscar bait movies. They’re so obviously seeking awards that a lot of time they aren’t seeking an audience.
I’m another one who hates Oscar bait movies — which is why I HATED Million Dollar Baby. That movie was practically begging for an award.
You guys are all right now. Oscar bait movies are fake and try way to hard! Million Dollar Baby was $10 poorly spent.
I like Hilary Swank and I’m fascinated by the story of Amelia Earhart. But when I saw the preview for this movie, my overall reaction was a shoulder shrug. I’ll probably end up seeing it, but probably not in the theater.
…but what’s the demographic of people who vote at boxofficemojo.com????
IQ level would be a better question..
Totally. I’ve never heard of this site.
I want to see it!
Not in october though, what are they thinking, this should be november and December fare.
right now I am looking for Paranormal activity, or saw, or Trick’R'Treat (on video)
I’ll see ameial, it looks great, but not until after I’m done with halloween and move on to something lighthearted closer to thanksgiving!
Meh. Who really cares?
I’m not terribly fond of Hilary Swank. she’s a good actress, but I’ve never liked any of her characters. also, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in Amelia Earhart. yes, she was the first female blahblah…but then she got lost. so good going, Amelia.
it just seems like an unnecessarily boring movie.
What? You didn’t like the NEXT Karate kid??
Frankly, I think “The Next Karate Kid” is my favorite Hilary Swank movie. I don’t see her appeal.
I’m one of the six percent. I’ll be seeing it in a theater.
Can’t they stop remaking films and begin to do biopics of historical figures that have yet to see a biopic? How many Amelia Earhart films do we actually need anyway?
I also blame Swanks hair cut and my distatse for Ford. Now that I think of it.
sad but true.
i’d see it if someone else was playing amelia.
Me too – I don’t think Swank is good casting for this part.
Really?! When Mira Nair announced she was making the movie, the first actress I thought of to play the part was Hilary Swank.
RE: bootsycolumbia – “the first actress I thought of to play the part was Hilary Swank.”
Which only lends proof to the idea that they might have done better to go with someone else – someone less obvious… someone who could have offered viewers an opportunity to be pleasantly surprise by new talent, or even established talent trying on a new hat… In other words, not someone who already has two Oscars for playing *the lone woman in a man’s world*!
But Swank LOOKS like Amelia
I wanted to see it until I saw the bad reviews at RottenTomatoes. it’s robot and zombie movies I don’t care about. got my fingers crossed for The Men Who Stare At Goats.
I’ll give you two reasons:
1.) Not a Hilary Swank fan
2.) Amy Adams portrayal of Amelia in Night At The Museum 2 ruined all future incarnations of Amelia for me. She was just that good.
I agree with both reasons!
I wouldn’t see anything with Swank in the cast.
