'Mad Men': Is Miss Farrell crazy?

Is Miss Farrell on Mad Men nuts/about to go nuts? Let’s examine the evidence. (SPOILER ALERT: This post contains stuff from last night’s episode.)

YES, SHE IS CRAZY
She sometimes looks crazy Look how buttoned up and proper everyone else is as this maypole event. And look at the barefoot Miss Farrell:

She jogs – Uuuugh, exercise. Only for the loonybirds. (Kidding! Exercising’s the best! That’s why people who are exercising always look so happy!)
She has the crazy eyes — She really, really does. The way she looks at Don is just one notch below the zombie-sex-mutant eyes on True Blood.
She doesn’t notice when stickers are on her face — I’m not a doctor, but I believe face numbness is a sure sign of the crazies.
That scene on the train — Lady, just ask Betty: Anyone who thinks Don Draper is “with [them]” has another thing comin’. Also, stalkery.

HUSH, SHE’S THE ONLY SANE ONE IN THAT NUTTY WORLD
She has curly hair — Represent!
She thinks people want to eat date bread — Wait, sorry, that goes in the other column….
She seemed so nice in that parent/teacher conference — She’s one of the few characters on this show to display empathy and warmth. I want her to meet Bert Cooper.

Okay, I’m a bit biased, PopWatchers: Miss Farrell and her drunk-dialing have screamed bad idea jeans to me since the get-go. (My kingdom for the return of Rachel Menken!) What do you think? Are you hot for teacher, or is Miss Farrell aboard the crazy train?

She’s got to be crazy to be with Don Draper, or at least have issues. But I’m too frustrated with Don this season to cast any real blame onto her.

It should be “genes” instead of “jeans” in the last paragraph where you say… “screamed bad idea jeans to me”

On the contrary, I think she’s a passionate, seize the day type of girl who’s the exact opposite of Betty, the frigid, demanding housewife who’s hemmed in enough by appearances not take Don to task for his crap and is not exactly all there herself.

    • seattle maggie

How in the hell is Betty “demanding” of Don? She asks almost nothing of him!

  • JM

She is very close to the verge of crazy. The way she was all upset that Don hadn’t called her, so much that she showed up on his morning train….just wait until he tries to move on.

  • Kathy

I was thinking the SAME thing watching. She is gonna go all Amy Fisher and try to take out Betty. I can’t wait to see her start showing up at the house, trying to be Betty’s friend… bet she tries to whack herself, too!!

  • Andi

I see the lovely Miss Farrell wanting to bond further with Sally and make sure she is doing well since Grandpa Gene’s death. This will allow her to get closer to Betty and try to figure out why Don has thrown her aside (as he surely will).

Hopefully the Draper’s don’t have any pet rabbits.

  • Hannah

I’m more frusterated at this point by how close she is to Midge from season 1 – there’s no way Don could be confused by her freewheeling spirit, he’s been there done that.

    • Amanda

Don certainly has a type, doesn’t he? I liked Miss Farrell when she was rejecting Don. She seemed to smart for his bullshit. Now that she’s just another belt notch, I hope she IS crazy since at least that would be interesting and new.

Showing up on the train solidified my stance in the “she’s crazy” camp. I think that’s some foreshadowing for the Fatal Attraction behavior that might creep up if Don gets bored & tries to move on.

there are some very nice people in the world who are one or two mini steps away from crazy. sadly i think miss farrell is one of them. everytime she tells don she doesn’t care about his life just that he is with her, tells me she is desperate for male affection. any kind of it. can we say fatal attraction? stalking him onto the train was just the first step. yet at the same time, they belong together. they share common backgrounds and she has this idealized perspective on the world that isn’t affected by the superficial values don lives by and hates so much.

as much as i’d love don and betty to work it out, it’s obvious they didn’t marry each other for much more than the stereotypical reasons – looks, sex, and financial provisions. betty found don to be handsome and successful. don found betty to be the perfect barbie doll. just look at how he expected her to be dressed and ready for him to show her off. mommy is pretty, other men want her, he has her, and that’s about all he actually cares about when it comes to betty. i think betty is realizing she wants more now and don is simply not interested in really giving it to her. it’s unfortunate because especially in these recent episodes betty really seems to be coming into her own finally. it’s just she’s never been taught how to be her own person. just everyone else’s doll.

Wow, I think you’ve nailed it.

  • Bill

    Hannah – that’s wonderful!

I’ve been telling people for a few weeks now how much she reminds me of Midge, both in appearance AND demeanor.

  • burgher

Ditto, dave – two words..fatal attraction. Now, for whom will it be fatal?

  • CK

One truly great thing about this show is it the stories NEVER play out as expected. Yes, Anna seems loopy, but it’s unlikely to play out like Fatal Attraction. Maybe Hindenberg?

  • DC

I thought of Fatal Attraction when I saw Miss Farrell board the train and mention that she would be on the train for just one stop. Yikes – look out Don!

  • Duh

    She’s bunny-boiling crazy.

  • Lolita Hansen

Why didnt anyone call Don a stalker or crazy when he started driving down the road every morning looking for her jogging? Isnt that too stalker like behavior?

    • MadWoman

You’re right. But I think we see Don’s behavior as more of a predator than stalker. He was stalking out his prey.

    • Jan

Driving on that road is Don’s route to work which is why he saw her jogging in the first place that night. He wasn’t going out of his way to do drive by’s. He was on his normal route to work and on his way looked for her. That is normal. Who wouldn’t?… Don is not nuts, deceptive maybe but not nuts.
