Emma from 'Glee': The most fashionable character on TV right now?

glee-mays_lAs promised last week, I wanted to share with you guys some more of my interview with Glee‘s costume designer, Lou Eyrich.

In this installment, Eyrich talked to me about sweet, cheery teacher, Emma. From her colorful cardigans to her adorable owl sweater chains, she has a bright, retro style that has made waves with fans just as much as the fantastic musical numbers.

Although most of Emma’s cute pieces are no longer available for purchase, check out what Eyrich has to say about the character’s drool-worthy style.

What was your inspiration for Emma’s style?
Oddly enough, Jayma is my inspiration because she’s got that perfect little body to dress, the big eyes, the red hair. And the way she plays her character — she’s just so innocent and sweet. But she’s really also quirky, like with her obsession with germs.

What was your approach to styling her?
We wanted to make her look like everything’s so neat — perfectly ironed and tucked-in shirts with matching belts, shoes and pins. We wanted to make her stand out from the other teachers. She’s always so happy and excited, so we wanted her outfits to represent that sunny disposition. In the pilot, we made her look much more teacher-y. Now we’re having more fun with her character, keeping her bright and unusual. Quriky is the word. Emma’s also always in stacked Mary Janes or T-strap heels. It takes the outfit down from being too stylish or too sexy. It makes her look prim and almost old-fashioned.

Are there certain colors you use on Jayma?
In the pilot, we tried to do some browns and greys, but we felt it didn’t work. It’s not any specific color, but we use pops of color to grab your attention and put some fun pins or necklaces on her.

Where do you shop for her?
Mostly J. Crew and Anthropologie. We also shop at Saks, especially the brand Milly. They do that great little tribute to the ’60s. We started collecting the sweater chains all over town, especially antique stores and vintage clothing stores for the pins. I’m obsessed with sweater pins!

I love those sweater chains! I’ll have to hit some vintage-clothing stores or look online.

I predict this could cause a renaissance for sweater chains – it’s a very classy look that translates to the workplace.

I actually have been making some of the sweater chains – even owl ones like Emma’s because I LOVE her style!!

Her wardrobe fits so perfectly with the character, always so seamless (see what I did there). I didn’t realize how much I was loving her outfits until that episode where Sue dissed one of Emma’s sweaters and I gasped, lol.. I was THAT offended.

Love her clothes, but my favorite was the green skirt she wore in Showmance (the chalkdust scene). I would love to know where they found that one.

“That blouse is insane” – Sue Sylvester. The clothing for Emma is just perfect.

I love the fashion critique from a woman in sweats.
This show is great, and the wardrobe is fantastic. Each character is dressed to match their personality traits. It’s wonderfully done.

I love her outfits! Please do a Style Watch special on where we can find her outfits. They do fit the character perfectly. This is like when we saw Blair’s outfits and swooned.

I love all the girls outfits especially Emma’s. Her outfit when she “accepted?” the proposal was so cute. That woman needs a wardrobe Emmy!

  • kk

She does dress cute, but the title of best dressed character on tv belongs to blair waldorf.

    • BB

      So true.

  • Sara

She’s adorable, but EW should have picked a better photo for this post. She has way more fashionable outfits than that!

(I loved when she and Will were both wearing periwinkle and she mentioned it, awww)
