The 'Cheers' gang is having a moment

Ted Danson’s dueling gigs on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Bored to Death have been delightful, and Shelley Long’s kooky cameo on Wednesday’s Modern Family triggered Read the full post.

It would be amazing if they did a reunion show and finally showed Sam and Diane together! Wouldn’t it? In the 5th season, with tensions high with Shelly Long leaving the show, a bit of their chemistry was gone. And in the last show, it was obvious that Sam could never leave the bar, so if Diane truly loved him, she had to move back to Boston. So they were never really given a chance. Since obviously many watch for the sexual chemistry, would be a gift to the fans, to see a reunion with a premise that Diane didn’t take that flight to L.A., she stayed in Boston and they had actually built a family together. Otherwise, as we would imagine they are both, sad, aging and alone. If Shelly had not left the show, I think that the writers would have been forced by seasons 9 or 10 to have the two get married, get Diane pregnant and exploit the humor of Sam as a father to be and then as a father. It’s sad that those premisses never got explored because Shelly left the show. Recently watched one of the early Frasier/Lilith episodes, those two were fantastic together too. Best of all, it would be great to finally see Vera! It’s funny that the Frasier show dealt with Maris the same way that Cheers dealt with Vera, but I think the fans should be rewarded by seeing Vera in the flesh next to Norm, and actually somewhat happy. The interesting thing about the character, is that without an actress to embody the character, Vera actually had a personality on the show, since she had lines that were related back by Norm, or as messages, and her behavior, thoughts and actions were related back to the viewers. I think a great number of people would actually watch the reunion show. It would be worthwhile for the execs at the network! And keeping in mind that there are actual bars that are the exact replica of Cheers set, they would be able to shoot on location, and feature Cheers without rebuilding the set from scratch. The most amazing thing about Cheers is that it has followers who were not even born when it first aired! So I think that the number of viewers of the reunion would be a very pleasant surprise! The plotline would just have to put all the ducks in the row, and not disappoint.
