I was a little perturbed when I heard the news that Bon Jovi would be promoting their 11th studio album, The Circle, by signing up to be an exclusive “artist in residence” at NBC for November. It sounds like this entails multiple performances on the Today show, a special on USA Network, and…an appearance on Bravo’s Inside the Actors Studio for Jon Bon Jovi. I’m all for creative marketing, but Inside the Actors Studio? I’ll admit, I’ve always thought Bon Jovi wasn’t a half-bad actor — in the past, he’s been relaxed and understated, with enough charisma to get him through the rough patches. But I’m having a hard time picturing what he and James Lipton are going to chat about: Serenading Ally McBeal? Playing Twister with Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City? Or, my favorite, Kathleen Turner admiring his ass in Moonlight and Valentino (clip below)? After that, I’ve got nothing. (Maybe they can talk about the totally convincing way he posed on a cliff in the “Blaze of Glory” video.) What do you think PopWatchers — is the NBC gig a good idea for the band? And is there some tour de force screen performance I’m forgetting?

Ugh. Aren’t there more deserving people to be on Actor’s Studio? Like, REAL actors. You can’t tell me Bon Jovi’s performance in Pay It Forward was good. Maybe that’s what they’ll talk about- not being good. A new direction for the show. What not to do. ( All musicians are not bad actors, btw. Bon Jovi just happens to be not great.)
That show is done, and has been done, and every guest they bring is just more evidence of it. Good for Bon Jovi for making it on there though, I guess. I’ve always liked the guy.
He did nicely in a small role in U-571, but I wouldn’t call it Tour de Force.
Maybe “Inside the Actors Studio” will show that clip of Jon Bon Jovi and Ritchie Sambora being interviewed by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog!
This makes me so sad inside.
I stopped watching ITAS when it became People Magazine with James Lipton. This celebrity worship is out of control. I love Jon but even he would have to be embarrassed. What’s next, Kate Gosselin to discuss her TV resume?
ita, I love the clip! I will watch if they show it. LOL. Maybe he will “suck” in this too.
One more example of a once-great show downplaying to the lowest common denominator. What do we expect in the era of Reality TV?
Ok, you would be hard pressed to find a bigger Bon Jovi fan than I but honestly, ITAS? Even I find that a stretch. But more singing on Today? Hooray!
If you look at “Inside the Actor’s Studio” like any other talk show – which is, let’s face it, what it has become – it sort of makes perfect sense that Jon Bon Jovi would be there to talk about the craft of acting by plugging his new cd.
“Actor’s Studio” has occasionally veered of the actor’s track–they had Elton John on, which actually was a very good show. Of course, how that benefitted the students other than being highly entertaining, I don’t know. JBJ’s acting actually impressed me more than I anticipated (his stint on Ally McBeal was a disaster due to writing more than performance, IMO), and he did study very hard to learn the craft. Who knows, the show might not be too bad.
Last time I checked, Billy Joel and Elton john have acted in NOTHING and they were both on the show.
Jon’s a pretty good actor, actually. I mean, not an Oscar winner, but he’s done a good job with the limited roles he’s had.
But ‘Inside The Actor’s Studio’ has had musicians on in the past and it’s been interesting. Love him or hate him, Jon Bon Jovi is an incredibly talented songwriter, so it should be interesting to hear him talk about his craft.
Hey, if Jennifer Lopez can be on ‘Inside the Actors Studio’ then anyone can.
Sit back and watch people, I guarantee you will be surprised. Jon Bon Jovi is well spoken, informed, funny and charasmatic. He is not just a singer in a long haired rock and roll band. I can’t wait to watch this.
