'The Expendables' trailer: Does Stallone deliver the explodo?

We’ve been closely following the production of Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming action throwback The Expendables — and by “closely following” I mean “idly paying attention to” — for which writer-director-star Stallone has gathered a B-level dream cast, including Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Eric Roberts. There was even talk, at one point, of an Arnold Schwarzenegger cameo. Clearly, this film is supposed to be the “end all, be all” for dudes who thrive on crappy ’80s action flicks. So why does this first trailer look so…lame?

Sure, all the requisite elements are there — barely witty bon mots, fellas surfing blast waves, over-the-top villain, exotic damsel in distress, berets — but it just kinda sits there. This trailer unspools with a by-the-numbers perfunctoriness that’s a little disappointing. Sly doesn’t look like he’s reveling in the cheesiness; rather, he’s taking the cheesiness too seriously. However, my film proclivities have already been established here on the ol’ blog — if a film’s got explosions, lasers, or gratuitous nudity (preferably all three), I’m guaranteed to like it — so I’ll catch The Expendables as soon as I possibly can. But my excitement level has eased back to Defcon 3. How about you?

    Will this film be subtitled?

This is NOT the trailer. It is a promo reel aimed at distributors and exhibitors. It therefore is more linear in its delivery and isn’t slicked up as an ad for an upcoming film.
It looks funny, fun, badass and I think this will prove Stallone has hit his directing stride.
    Bring it on!

I was thinking that it didn’t look like a trailer but a promo, there is a difference between the two. Looks fun though.

this is truly a terrible trailer. I was ready for it look awesomely bad, but it just looks bad.

Are you kidding? Eric Roberts as the villain? I’m there.

    This will be The…..Greatest….Movie…..EVER!!!

I think it looks pretty good! Sure, he’s not going to win a best Original Screenplay Nomination, but it’s meant to be fun, nostalgic and badass. I think it could be successful in all three phases.

Looks interesting. The action looks good, thought he acting looks a little stiff. Can someone tell me what the plot is? Rescue a pretty girl?

This has me conflicted. The college-educated, serious film loving grown-up side of me is ready to crap all over this, but the side of me who was a teen in the mid-to-late 1980s is kinda giddy. I’ll have to see more before I figure out which side to ultimately listen to.

I want to like the film b/c I like Statham and Li, but this rough first trailer showed some pretty corny lines and cheesy acting. Oh well, it’ll still end up on my Netflix queue…HA HA

Considering some of the nuclear waste that EW closely follows as far as television, to say this looks horrible is pretty hyprocritical. Especially if its a promo reel.

BTW – we dont need 5 recaps on ‘Dancing with the Stars’

I agree it looks pretty flat– but like others said, it’s only a promo reel (and those ALWAYS look bad). I’ll wait for the actual, official trailer before I make a final judgement.
