The TV show you watch when you're tipsy?

Jenna-Elfman-Accidentaly_l-2A colleague who will only let me identify her as “M” just admitted that the Jenna Elfman sitcom Accidentally on Purpose is one of the shows she likes to watch when she’s been drinking. (Now sober, she just reenacted Elfman’s “My booty is delicious” dance, pictured, in my office — and insisted that David Sutcliffe, Gilmore Girls‘ Christopher last seen on The Practice, who guested on a recent episode, needs his own show: “He is cute. He is likable. He is cute. Like a slightly older Scott Speedman, who also deserves a show.”)

Which show you do enjoy watching more — or only, in the case of Accidentally on Purpose, which still isn’t doing Ashley Jensen justice — when you’ve been drinking? Slezak, always one to respond to a question if it involves booze, says: “Melrose Place definitely benefits from a couple cocktails…but I’ve also been known to watch it sober, if we happen to be going through the DVR backlog on a weekend morning.* If the husband isn’t with me and I’m half in the bag, the default position is automatically TVG. (If you don’t know what TVG is, you betta get an edge-ooh-caysh.)” Annie answers, “Yo Gabba Gabba!, Strangers With Candy, the ‘Spring Breakout’ episode of Arrested Development, and whatever is on Adult Swim.” Wendy Mitchell reluctantly admits to Bridezillas and Say Yes to the Dress. I feel less bad about myself for crying at Ghost Whisperer if I can blame it on a few mojitos.

Your turn. Name your tipsy TV choice.

I actually put on The Rocky Horror Picture Show if I’m a little tipsy. Tim Curry. Mmmmmmmmm :D

If you’re drinking to watch TV maybe you should start thinking about Betty Ford. Now lighting up is something different. I always enjoyed Buffy and Lost after a little medicinal

I once watched the Michelle Tractenberg/Hayden Penetierre gem ‘Ice Pricess’ after 3/4s of a bottle of wine and declared it “The best movie EVER”. I have yet to go back and watch it sober.

TOTALLY agree about David Sutcliffe. He is adorable and I loved him on the Gilmore Girls.

Oh, and tipsy shows? Golden Girls and Arrested Development for sure.

My friends and I pregamed this season’s premiere of Dollhouse, and it made all of Joss Whedon’s shenanigans SO MUCH BETTER! I had to watch it again later because Dollhouse is freaking crazy, but I definitely enjoyed the first watch more.

Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations. Not because I need the booze in order to watch it, but because I find that a little bit of spirits help me feel a part of the show in a way. Sometimes I find myself acting according to a theme: South American country? South American wine!

High five! I had “No Reservations” on and was halfway through my second glass of wine as I read your comment. Way to be!

In complete agreement! I never thought about drinking according to region, though. That’s genius! Thanks for the idea! I’ve got a couple episodes in my DVR right now, so I’ll have to hit the liquor store before I watch them this weekend.

SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WATCH THAT DRUNK AND YOU WILL HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE!

I don’t drink.. but I only watch this show because it is so bad it’s good. You could totally get drunk if you took a drink everytime someone says “sex”. (Which is about once every 3 sentences.)

  • Danny

“Coupling” (British version ONLY) or “Arrested Development”

  • Jed

Sex and the City, not because it’s bad or anything. Takes my mind off the fact that I’ve got the “spins”

    • KWB

Sex and the City is always my drunken pick. Maybe because the gals seem to imbibe yummy cocktails in every episode? I am always willing to watch it sober too, though.

Both Glee and Dancing with the Stars go down well with a little bit of alcohol. Both because you’ll laugh just that much louder at the intentional (Glee) and unintentional (most of DWTS) jokes.

How can anyone NOT watch Family Guy while feeling tipsy??? It almost becomes like karaoke on a Wednesday night!

    • Caryn

OMG that was gonna be my answer. I don’t usually watch it sober but it was on at the bar during happy hour one time and it was the funniest show… EVER (a hamburger stroke??)

  • Syd

Nothing like some Mad Men and a glass of scotch…or three.

    • steph

      amen!

    • Valley Girl

Word! “True Blood,” “Mad Men,” and “Dexter,” are all on Sunday nights – I’m on lockdown with my after-dinner drinks. Cheers!

Reruns of Lost especially when paired with a drinking game are great fun when tipsy. Only reruns though, I couldn’t bear to drink through a new episode in case I missed something. Also I haven’t done it, but I feel heroes might be made better with booze. HIMYM is also high on the list since they are always at a bar!

    • lls

i totally agree about lost. whenever i watch after drinking i come up with a “genius” theory that explains the whole show. of course, i never remember it later…

  • Sarah El

I haven’t really reached out to television when having a few drinks, but I do remember vividly prior to my own viewing of Battlestar Galactica, a gaggle of dudes who gathered and shared several drinks while they watched the show… which was my partial inspiration to start watching it myself (although I chose to view it sober).

    America’s Next Top Model.

    While smizing.

    • John

My wife and I do the Top Model with our Friday night beer when we’re at home with sleeping kids. She likes the petty drama, and I enjoy a show with half naked women that my wife doesn’t mind me watching.
