'Modern Family' recap: Planes, big-box chains, and family ordeals

Filed under: Modern Family and tagged: ,

modern-family_dlWhile last night’s Modern Family didn’t quite make me double over with laughter the way its first two episodes did, it nonetheless pulled off the trick of effortlessly straddling the territory between absurdist humor (Ed O’Neill’s Jay smashing a remote-control plane into son-in-law Phil’s face) and genuinely moving (Julie Bowen’s Claire giving dad Jay a conciliatory kiss on the head to thank him for an act of kindness toward her injured husband). Plus, it’s not as if there weren’t plenty of laughs in this episode, which focused on unexpected pairings — Jay and Phil; Claire and her grade-school stepbrother Manny; Claire’s daughter Alex and Jay’s hot young wife Gloria; and, of course, Mitchell and Costco.

If I had to hand out a trophy for episode MVP, it’d go to Sofia Vergara as Gloria who, behind the ridiculous beauty and thick accent, is a rather complicated character — maternal enough to push for regular family outings (whether or not her husband and his children want ‘em); savvy enough to cut through Alex’s wall of insecurities in one short lunch; and vain enough to ban the word “step” in describing her new family relations, except when she’s slapped with the “grandmother” label. I also love her confessionals with Jay, where her blithely fawning comments about her deadbeat ex (“Once, on a dare, he even boxed with an alligator”) are equal parts innocent reminiscence and pointed reminder to her new (and older) spouse that he’d better appreciate he’s with a woman who at least from a superficial standpoint, could definitely be doing better. Vergara (who was terrific even on the short-lived Hot Properties) proved just as funny in her scenes opposite Ariel Winter (as Alex), a pint-sized actress who doesn’t exhibit any of the cloying tendencies so common among child actors. In fact, Winter’s eyebrow raise (embedded below) after Gloria answered her question about how many men she’d slept with — “Eight. Next.” — scored one of the biggest laughs of the night. Ditto for Alex’s reason for not wanting to borrow a hand-me-down dress from her older sister: “No. That sends an ugly message. That I’m Haley.”

Interestingly enough, earthy Gloria’s 10-year-old son Manny seems to have already inherited his mother’s therapeutic gifts, as his playdate with trampoline-obsessed “nephew” Luke turned into a sweet heart-to-heart with Claire. It’s nice to see the latter character finally have an “adult” to play off of, in light of the fact that her husband is little more than an overgrown child. (Exhibit A: The “next level” conversation, embedded below.) Hopefully, Claire’s white lie about Manny having had a great time with Luke will lead to future big-sis/little-bro interactions.

As for the remainder of the episode, while I’m not sure I buy Jay purposely doing bodily harm to his son-in-law — maybe he should’ve just grazed Phil’s head or hit him in the leg? — I did enjoy Phil’s confessional comparing their relationship to silverback apes in the jungle, and in particular the image of the female apes (Claire) “presenting their nice scarlet behinds.” The Cameron-Mitchell trip to Costco, meanwhile, turned out to be the least successful segment of the night, perhaps because the “eww I hate big-box stores till I actually go into one” shtick seems like it passed its expiration date back in 1999.

What did you think of Modern Family last night? How about that insane story of Gloria’s, about dressing Manny as a girl and her lie about his “twin” sister, that closed the episode? Give your own review in the comments section below!

Wednesdays nights haven’t been this good since the Dawson Creek days. I LOVE Glee and Modern Family!

  • Sadie

Camerons line, “I’m like Costco — I’m big, not fancy and I dare you not to like me,” had me roaring with laughter, as did the scenes with Manny and Claire. Ah, that Manny, wise beyond his years.

    • Judith Light’s Eyebrow Waxer

Me too. I’m surprised the reviewer didn’t mention at least one of their funny lines.

    • Mo

My favorite line was when after the guy who hated Costco picked up the paper shredder, put it in the basket, stood back and turned around and said, “What IS this place?” I died laughing. It was like he discovered some buried suburban gem. Hilarious. I love Manny and Claire. Actually, the only kid I don’t care for is Claire’s son. But I love this show. Thank God for smart, scripted comedy again!

Even though the big box turnaround has been done, it hasn’t ever been done this sincerely: the way Cam said the wine is “just past the tires” without a trace of irony, the absolute bliss on Mitchell’s face when he discovered the exact shredder he wanted. On a related Cam-Mitchell note, I haven’t been able to stop smiling at the memory of “Casablanca.”

    • funny

“I’ve been in a plane crash.” Hilarious!

  • CK

The Manny/Claire scene had me busting up. The kids in this cast are really good and funny–not just cute. I also liked the Costco line too “…I dare you not to like me”.
This is shaping into one of the best comedies on television.

    • Olivia

Killer funny! Can’t wait for the movie to come out! (I wish) It is so different from other situation comedies, they are real characters not waiting for the laugh – great situations, dialog and chemistry, keep this show going!!!!!

  • Jenn

The best part about Gloria’s twin story at the end was the look on Jay’s face. I erupted into laughter and he didn’t even have to say a word.

    • Jenn

Also loved “Casablanca” which we’ve already started doing around the house.

      • Strups

My husband and I have started doing that too!! SOOOOOOOO funny.

      • suzeq

What WAS that joke? Was it something he was doing with his hands? I just did not get it! Help me, please, someone..!

      • Samsara

        To: Suzeq
The reference to “Casablanca”, the movie – you’ll see the hands are positioned as if they’re playing the piano. The piano-playing scenes were integral…”Play it again, Sam”. At least that’s how I understood it.

    • Rich

Ed O’Neill is simply priceless. Like his character, he’s the glue that holds this big, unwieldy potential mess together. His reaction to the dead twin sister story was the highlight of a show filled with them.

      • leo

I agree. Love him. He’s the gruff heart of the show.

    • Season

      Oh, that was hilarious.

  • AA

Calling all fans of AD: Modern Family could be an awesome fix for us until the movie comes out. The sometimes quite subtle humour combined with the family dynamics have put this show on my “to watch” list.

    • bgrass13

AA – agreed! While it’s not AD, it does well in filling that huge void.

    • Mothra

Yep. If you’re gonna steal, steal from the best.

  • Monica

I thought last night’s episode was hilarious. The writer’s are doing a great job keeping the humor fresh and modern. I think Gloria stole the show!

  • Mel

    “Casablanca”

I liked the Costco story. Even though it’s “been done,” I just find Jesse Tyler Ferguson so appealing. Plus, as someone who is often accused of being (ahem) “discerning,” I could identify with his “discovery” of Costco — so similar to the discovery I made once upon a time.

    • J.B.

I think I have called myself discerning before, so I identify and am generally a big box store snob.

I LOVED the city mouse/county mouse analogy. I also hope at one point we get to meet the infamous Pepper.

Sofia Vergara is a revelation. That character has a complexity that isn’t obvious, but is lovely and smart.

Plus, the visual of Luke jumping on the trampoline with a box on his head and no pants.

      • John

        “He’s a city mouse and I’m a country mouse.”
        “Who SAYS that?!”
        “A country mouse…”

  • Stephanie

Loved loved the shocked look on Manny’s face when she poured coffee into his chocolate milk, and loved the Casablanca moments! This show is seriously brilliant.

  • Stella Hemloch

My favourite line of the night was the city mouse vs country mouse line. Cracked me right up!

  • hannah

The only issue I have w/ this show is their need to “wrap it up” at the end. That’s the part that is falling flat. Don’t try to become a traditional sitcom in the last 2 mins every week. Leave it hanging.

    • mike

I disagree. I dont think this is a leave it hanging show. this is a show that you dont need to see last week’s episode to know whats going on.

  • Charlotte

This show is great….I agree that this episode was not as funny as the first 2, but I would recommend this show to everyone I know…..

  • KC

I love this show! Definately one of the best comidies on TV! I, too, liked the Costco line “…I dare you not to like me” and the story at the end! It was hilarious! I also liked when they were in the big hug at the end of the episode and Phil said “I feel like these arms could wrap around the world”. It is just little thowawy lines and looks that make this comedy so good. I will also agree with the MVP going to Sofia Vergara. She is perfect in that role! Although, I think the whole cast is really good together!

    • Dean

Bingo…the “throwaway lines” are great!!! Thats why I watch it at least 3 times, just to gather them all up.

  • laura

Sofia Vergara as Gloria … hands down had the best esps. last night. How she play Alex into thinking that the cute waiter was going over to their table for Alex instead of her … cool! How sweet she is with Manny … and her stories are just to laugh and choke on whatever you might be eating or drinking at the time … great job Sofia!

  • Coconutty

See I thought this episode was funnier than last week’s. I loved when Phil said (twice) ‘I’ve been in a plane crash’ or something like that. Gloria was hilarious and likeable, and I really liked the Costco storyline.

    • Lori E

LOL!! I just laughed out loud to the point of tears in my eyes when reminded of Phil’s “I’ve been in a plane crash” line…LOVED that last night!

    • Harrison

Coconutty: I agree. The second episode was a little bit of a letdown after the brilliant pilot, but this episode was possibly the best one so far. I loved Phil’s plane crash line, and I think the gay couple’s story this week was better than last week’s. But where was their baby? With Pepper??

Definitely the best new show of the season, and in my current Top 5 for all current shows.

      • JayNYC

I agree with you both about the progression of hilarity. Pilot was by far the best — I was busting out laughing the whole time. Yesterday’s show was better than prior week.

    • JustMe

I laughed harder at the “I’ve been in a plane crash” line, (just as funny the second time, too) than I have any anything on a sitcom in recent memory. I was howling with laughter.

    • Katie R

I like when Phil said “What do you like about me?” And “What do you like about him?” hahaha
Loved the Costco storyline. thought it was fab!

    • ericalina

I also loved when he came in the house and said “I need to rest my face.” Such a throwaway line.

  • Danb2666

“I see your eyes rolling” I get that all the time from my boyfriend. What a great line!

    • JayNYC

It’s “I feel you rolling your eyes at me.” The whole point is that he doesn’t have to *see* it to know that he’s *doing* it!
