David Letterman's extortion scandal: Will it affect his ratings?

david-letterman_lAn interesting debate has emerged from the David Letterman extortion scandal and his admission that’s he’s slept with more than one of his female staff members through the years: Will it have any effect on his ratings? Opinions about the story itself range from “Ewww, I’m completely grossed out” to “Nah, this doesn’t bother me at all.” One thing no one seems certain of, though, is how the whole situation will play out in terms of the highly competitive late-night ratings war. Will Letterman take a hit when it comes to his audience numbers? Will there be any difference in reaction based on gender? Take our poll below and let us know what you think!

    I don’t watch Letterman so I really don’t care.

  • DavidJ

I’m sure it’ll be just like the Palin thing– regardless of people’s true feelings, they’ll will tune in ANYWAY just to see if he comments on it again, or to see how it does or does not affect the show.
And then eventually everyone will forget about it and it’ll be back to business as usual.

I very rarely watch late night, but when I do, from no on I’ll tune in to Conan.

  • Patti

It appears Dave had a long term fling with one or two people. No big deal, move on everyone.

    • Brenda

I agree he isn’t the first and surely won’t be the last! I’m sure that there are others they just haven’t been caught in the cookie jar. Life goes on even though I don’t condone what he did vut he apparently had willing partners.

  • Poll?

This poll is worded to trick the person voting. You should reword it! Very sneeky just like Letterman.

    • smeely

How in hell is it worded to trick anyone? It’s not hard to understand for anyone literate enough to spell “sneak.”

  • David D

And as I understand it, the affairs occurred before his son was born, so we’re talking about six years ago. No excuses from me: it was still a rotten thing to do to his longtime-girlfriend-now-wife, but this didn’t JUST happen.

  • Collin

This pole doesn’t take into account whether or not a person is a regular viewer. If one never watches letterman (as most of the country does not) then one will vote no, thus it is not reflective of the recent scandal. 100% pointless.

    • ger

      Haha – you said ‘pole’.

  • Sara

I agree, this poll is really NOT clear… I voted “yes” and I’m a woman, but I thought the question was in the TITLE of this piece, “Will you be watching?”

In reality if your read the paragraph, hidden, it asks “will it affect his ratings?” I would have answered no.

Take this down, or at least put a proper question above the poll, EW. Ugh.

    • AD

Anyone who has elementary reading comprehension could not be confused by the question. Instead of criticizing EW, maybe you should criticize your elementary shool teachers (or your capacity to read).

      • AD

Obviously, I should criticize my spelling or typing teachers as I mistyped “school”. Mea Culpa. (Hope that’s not too “high brow” for some of you who were thrown by “less inclined”…

    • smeely

That question most certainly does not appear in the title of the piece. And the poll question is right there, right where you vote. And it is absolutely clear and grammatically correct. Bozos.

  • ian g

i agree, re-word the poll. i won’t be watching, i’m a man, but i voted NO (i’m a man)… stop trying to be sophisticated with your “less inclinations” and what not.

  • erin

I couldn’t care less who DL sleeps with. I’ll watch because it’s funny. If we only watched people on TV that never did anything we didn’t approve of, then reality television wouldn’t exist. Get over it!

  • megr

i am a letterman watcher and will continue to be one. keep in mind, letterman fans loooove dave. if you’ve been watching dave for the last 10 to 20 years, then you know that he is incredibly funny, intelligent and far from “creepy” (the exact oppposite of leno in other words). people who genuinely appreciated letterman before, will continue to do so. can’t speak for channel hoppers, or people that find leno humorous

  • Jim

I am 0% inclined to watch the show ever, so I can’t be any less inclined.

  • Jeff-In-Atlanta

50% of Americans cheat at some point in their marriage. So why should I stop watching Dave when I’m doing it behind my spouse’s back? (oh yes, I am)

    • Jeff’s Wife

So am I! This is the best sex I’ve ever had (oh yes, it is).

  • Jami

Yeah, I still won’t watch the crabby old guy.

    • D

You sound kind of crabby yourself.

  • LindaT

I don’t care who Dave has sex with. It’s all between consenting adults, and frankly it’s none of my business. I’m just watching a tv show — I’m not looking to have a personal relationship with the guy.
And, if I chose entertainment options based on the personal lives of their stars, there wouldn’t be much left to watch or listen to.

    • marie

I agree. From whats being said this happened years ago too and he wasn’t married then so who cares. It was between consenting adults.

      • js

I agree. But didn’t we kinda’ know he did anyway? I just assumed his current wife was an ex-employee…just like his girlfriend/staff writer years ago.
All adults and no laws broken…why should it affect my tv habits?
