'Weekend Update Thursday': Everything old is... still old

Categories: Saturday Night Live

Ruh-roh. Was there a single reference on last night’s Weekend Update Thursday that wasn’t weirdly dated? Dennis Franz and John Malkovich? Hall and Oates? (I’ll give that a pass for at least being funny.) Does anyone still care about Suze Orman? Even Maya Rudolph’s Oprah impression seemed crusty — “you get a (item)” jokes are still the best we can do? Yikes.

Weirdly, the Hall and Oates song does not appear to be online, which stinks, because it was hilarious and I wanted to post it.

What’d you think of last night’s episode, PopWatchers? Were you as disappointed as I was?

The song was the only part of the show I paid attention to, and yes, it was a good one.

  • Jessica

Yeah, definitely not good. This was the last week for it, right?

  • theanonymous00

Suze Orman was the highlight of the show – how SAD is that!!

I’m from Chicago and I still enjoyed watching Bill Hader as Malkovich insult the city in every possible way. “The children all look like Roseanne and their parents look like monsters! I said Good Day Sir!” So weird and totally hilarious.

    • Isembard

Never been a Malkovich fan, so I love the impression. Also love the Hader does these completely random impressions. Seriously who does Vincent Price anymore or, of all current actors, Makovich. So deliciously out there.

  • El Grincho

Suze Orman (as personified by the Mighty Kristen Wiig) is F-n funny…so there!

  • Holly

Hopefully all the old recurring impressions last night means there might not be as many of them during the regular shows.
I thought Hader’s Malkovich impression was really good.

  • KFed

With the regular show so awful at the moment, the last thing they need is an extra one to try and fill.

I take it for what its worth: it was created during the election last fall and it was used this fall to hedge their bet on Community before they could re-arrange the schedule (a) after they kept Community; (b) had the hour-long Office; (c) could slide 30 Rock back in.
They missed so bad on Kath & Kim last year and they blew it by dismissing “My Name Is Earl”. Its all about the money, that’s all.

    • MK

Totally with you on Earl. That was just stupid! It had an audience – maybe not Idol sized, but still… and NBC killed it for what???

  • Andrea

It’s obvious and boring that NBC is kissing up to Suze Orman in these skits. There are a lot of real problems with Orman that they could be using for material like how she has helped destroy the economy with reckless advice and how she, not unlike Palin, has fooled the world into making a waitress an economy expert, instead they make fun of her jackets.

  • Chase

Yeah… last night’s SNL: WUT soured quickly. No opening skit, no Amy… no comedy. The Malkovich/Franz duo made me laugh more because of it’s obscurity than it’s content. I would love to see them team up again in a mock buddy detective sketch.

    • BrandonK

      OMG, totally!

  • xrayban

I liked it a lot. Could watch Kristin Wiig do her Suze Orman for a whole 1/2 hour!

  • bunker

All I’ll say is thank goodness this isn’t a permanent show.

  • BrandonK

It wasn’t their best, but that John Malkovich voice is SO PERFECT, I just love it! The Suze Orman sketches are always funny too. I’ve said it before, though, and I’m sure I’ll say it again: Seth needs a co-host. He’s much better when playing off someone.

  • MK

Totally missed it because apparently every net from the CW to Fox has to air all their good “genre” shows on the same night. NBC loses here because they aren’t airing one, tho if they were I don’t know what I’d do. Break the Thursday night logjam fer cry eye!

  • Stephanie T.

Ok Hader and the Hall and Oates song were funny, but that was it. NBC has to show COMEDY not stupidity. There is a huge difference between the two.
