'Survivor Talk': Is Ben a racist? The contestant fires back!

Categories: Reality TV, Survivor

Whoa. Just…whoa. We knew we’d have our hands full when Survivor: Samoa’s most recently ousted contestant, Ben Browning, called in to talk about his controversial run on the show, but even we were shocked by what came out of his mouth during the newest edition of Survivor Talk. Think he’s remorseful about calling Yasmin “ghetto trash” or refusing to apologize to Jaison? THINK AGAIN! In fact, he goes even further with comments about race that are sure to make you cringe/vomit/punch your computer monitor. But former Survivor favorite Eliza Orlins is not gonna take that! She joins Josh Wolk and me in confronting Ben about his actions and attitude in what can only be described as the most explosive Survivor Talk ever! Watch the video below and then duck for cover.

Check out an exclusive video of Jeff Probst conducting a run through of an upcoming challenge for Survivor: Samoa! Also, read Dalton Ross’s Survivor TV Watch.

You know, I wouldn’t say he is racist, but I would say he is insensitive. Racism is a different thing.

    P.S. Eliza is super hot!

    • bbug

I agree. He is not a racists.. just insensitive and opinionated. Maybe a Jack@#$ too.

      • Jason

He’s unintentionally racist, but his bigger problem is that he’s ignorant and not at all interested in fixing that about himself.

      • Al

Gotta agree with you there Jason.

      • Sam

Absolutely agree with Jason. Ignorance of one’s own prejudice is even worse. There’s no hope for this guy. As Eliza said, he is a bad bad human being. The WORST person on Survivor ever, and that’s saying a lot.

      • rebecs

Agree with all of you. :-) He is QUITE ignorant! I’ll refer to something Betsy said in an interview. He’s an idiot, a jerk, and hasn’t learned yet, but he will…probably the hard way.

    • Tardy 4 Da Party

      Baby Boo:

Ben is a “Bar Manager” which means he has power over hiring his staff.. Race + Power = Racism. Do you really think he would hire African Americans in his bar; and if he did, would he ever give them fair treatment, esp. if they ever stood up to him? Time to wake up from your fairytale dream!

      • Olga

No i don’t think he would hire an african american, and thats why we have laws, they could sue him for racial discrimination. You can only be ignorant and racist for so long till it kicks you in the ass.

      • WTF

How the Hell do YOU know how he runs the bar (Or anything else) from some stupid clips on a tv show??? Talk about ignorant! Making assumptions like that (Even about stupid crap like this.) is what makes moving forward more difficult than it should be.

      • AnonymooseBlog

Race+Power is not the definition of racism. Racism is the belief that one race is inherently better than others.

      • jake

Ignorant fools jumping on the “hate a whie guy” bandwagon. She is ghetto trash. She was acting like it and sounding like it. And attacking him personally ans repeatedly. I would have said ten times worse to the b=tch

      • Ready

How would you know what he would and wouldn’t do, do you know him personally

    • Need2Reply

Why is it white folks are as quick to say someone isn’t a racist as black folks are to label someone is. A quick check of the dictionary: Racism is the belief that you are superior to a person of another race which leads to prejudice and discrimination. This Ben is just another pseudo-KKK disguised in white boy cool and the sooner his peers wake up to it and others like him, the better off the next generations will be. Because this generation is already tainted.

      • AnonymooseBlog

        Who said I was white…?

      • jake

typical garbage speak from a race card player

      • Kisty

Look it’s just not good to label people. This guy Ben is just trying to get noticed so that he will win a game and have a reality career.

    • tommy

Someone ought to punch you in the mouth

      • AnonymooseBlog

Punch me for what? Speaking my mind. You do know this is America, right? Freedom of speech! As Voltaire did not say, but had attributed to him, “I despise what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

      • JustMe

This is America? Cool – last time I checked I was in a completely different country and the internet was worldwide. Who knew?

      • tommy

I was referring to the writer of this slop. Dalton Ross. The type of loser who is begging to be pummeled.

    • Wayne

Here we go, a tough guy on the computer. How about you coming and punch ME in the mouth tough guy?

      • AnonymooseBlog

Excuse me? How was I acting like a tough guy?

      • AnonymooseBlog

Sorry, did not notice you meant to reply to the guy in the above comment!

      • Ready

Who said we still have freedom of speech.

    • Alisimone

Definitely not racist. Overbearing and stupid, yes. Ghetto trash/trailer trash?? What’s the difference, but still not racist. After all she did attack him pretty agressively herself.

      • AnonymooseBlog

As someone said above, I would say he is unintentionally racist. He doesn’t know what he is saying could be construed as racism.

    • Robert S

You must be ashamed to be white, otherwise you are a “racist”

    • puppy dog

Anonymoos, that is the sickest thing I’ve read on any of these blogs. Eliza is sickening. She’s a joke on the human race.

    • Bob

You know, I completely agree with Ben….he is being a realist. He may not be the nices person in the world, but he is not the worst player ever. And to be honest, Jasmin was totally acting like “ghetto trash” and Ben called it like he saw it. GHETTO!!
By the way…Eliza, you are very annoying…I’m glad I don’t have to see your stupid eyes rolling around all the damn time anymore.
      Peace!

      • love me or hate me

        I agree with Bob.

  • joeinmemphis

    bastard

  • Dean

Ben is a total d-bag and I’m not defending the things he said on the show, but I found Eliza’s reaction to his explanation extremely irritating. Most of what he was saying in the 3:00 minute was perfectly reasonable. Eliza’s wide-eyed reductive reaction of uber-PC contempt was just as bad.

    • Chris

I agree. I would not consider his comments to be racist. Insensitive yes, racist no.

    • AK

Yeah, but Eliza’s reactions (at tribal council for example) are what she was infamous for on “Survivor.” It’s also part of why they like to have her back on “Survivor Talk”; she’s amusing.

      • Dean

That’s true. Actually I’ve always liked Eliza. Her “It’s a f’n stick” line is one of the best Survivor moments ever.

      • hc

Totally agree. I don’t agree with him or particularly like him, but it’s not like his argument has zero basis and isn’t worth considering. Her incredulous laughter is just marching blindly with the PC-beat.

      • Robert S

Eliza is a pathetic loser, still hanging around a show that kicked her off twice. Gawd, get a life.

    • Natasha

I agree. I like Ben, and I don’t think he’s a racist at all. Eliza sitting there laughing was just rude.

Also the way ew.com has portrayed this in the article I disagree with.

  • Flora

I think I can call him dumb now.

  • Eric

That had to be the most awkward Survivor Talk ever. WOW. My mouth almost hit the floor the way he was talking.

  • Winston

Incredible! I cannot wait for the Reunion show when Probst probes some more on the altercations between Ben and his fellow castaways.

Nice little opening skit. Always great to see Eliza again.

One minor issue though, this time there was way too much footage of the episode and not enough of you 3. I really wanted to see YOUR reactions to what the booted off have to say. Please don’t do what CBS is doing and showing 90% Foa Foa and 10% Galu. Today’s Survivor Talk felt a bit too much like that.

Looking forward to next week’s Talk.

  • Eric

No, he’s ridiculously racist and horrible

    • tommy

And you are ridiculous, cowardly and oh so PC pu-ssy whipped

      • Kisty

Why would you verbally attack Eric for speaking his mind? Last time I checked we live in a country where we can do this.

  • a.e.

This was fantastic. I love the “I can’t be racist – I’ve dated black women!” right after admitting that he made the comments to hurt her. That is, made comments that would hurt her because she was black and so would be particularly offended for being called ghetto. But, no, no, no is he racist! Gah!

BTW, Eliza gives such great reaction shots its ridiculous. You too, Dalton, but Eliza is just so over the top effusive.

  • carol

He really is ignorant. He is just a total jerk and jerks like that always justify their behavior in their own mind by making it other people’s problem that they don’t “get” him. He is a bigot but he doesn’t know it.

    • JA

      Bingo

    • tommy

How do u justify yours. Ben seems like a great guy.

      • wakeforce

        You obviously have no taste!

  • Nick

Eh…I don’t know if he’s completely racist, but one thing is for sure: he’s the biggest douchebag I’ve ever seen on the show.

  • davej

First of all, Yazmin got mad at Ben for physically coming after her in the game because she is a woman and he is a guy. That is bull. Either Yazmin and the other women are equal competitors on the show or they are not. If they are not, then the show should give them a special advantage in the competitions.

I agree with Ben that he had a right to defend himself when Yazmin came after him. I don’t agree with him insulting her intelligence or calling her ghetto trash.

I think this is getting blown out because Yazmin and Jaison are both black. If Ben had said he knew Jaison and Yazmi would talk because “birds of a feather flock together” and those two were either both women or both Latino or German or whatever else, nobody would care. In that sense, this is a case of people expecting special treatment because they are black.

Jaison asking Ben to consider history when speaking is a case of Jaison asking for special treatment. All I have to say Jaison is what – will it take for me to treat you just like I would treat any other person? I’m not going to treat you or Ben or Yazmin any differently than I treat anyone else. I treat each person with repsect unless they give a reason to not do so.

    • juicehead

      exactly

    • Anonymous

Davej, You are so clueless, you don’t even know. You and Ben are birds of the same feather. I love how he said he dated a black woman(an obvious lie) and there is only the human race, then later he says obviously the black people will get together. He complained about the race card, then played it himself. Ben is a total ass.

    • tommy

Blacks do always stick together. Denying the reality of life makes you a joke

      • Sam

This kind of comment is not only shocking and untrue; it is prejudicial. How could you generalize like that? Bigotry is rampant everywhere, as this comment board has shown.

      • Robert S

So is bullsh-t, as evidenced by you and the other little liberal race-carders

      • a

RobertS – don’t forget to bring your sheet to your next party of hate meeting

      • To Tommy

That is not true. Don’t to lump people together just because you are too ignorant to come up with something intelligent to say.Ben is trying to win a game and rattle some nerves. That’s it.

      • Freddie

Ok I agree that to an extent, birds of a feather DO stick together. Rich kids stick together, gays stick together, jocks, blacks, etc

    • Marc

davej says “treat each person with repsect unless they give a reason to not do so” and I think that is commendable. Isn’t it considered respectful if you consider who you are talking to regardless of their race? We make adjustments for what we know or perceive about people all the time. If your friend just lost his job and you just got a promotion, you might not celebrate at the same level in front of the recently unemployed person. I don’t think african americans are asking for special treatment. The reality is that considering someone’s feelings based on race is just as easy as doing it for any other reason.

From my perspective, Ben’s comments weren’t racist or necessarily that insensitive. He could very well be a bigot, but I don’t think his behavior on the show or in this interview is the right evidence. This stuff is merely evidence of him being a pain in the ass to be around. And as he says “love him or hate him.”

  • Ed

Ben’s hiding behind too many insecurities there. He is totally racially insensitive, but perhaps unwittingly so – I’d call Ben ignorant rather than malicious. I don’t like to see this on Survivor – as a Brit, I think Survivor is a fantastic show and really showcases American talent. Unfortunately Ben seems to be a (hopefully) outdated stereotype. Glad his bigotry is off the show – there is simply no place for it, however interesting it is to watch him interact socially (if anything about his interaction with other human beings can be considered ’social’…)

    • gymnosapien

Sadly Ed, he is not alone in his neanderthal attitudes, esp in the South.

      • debby

He is racist but your comment is out of line against Southerners. That is stereotypical. He is from California. Southerners are no more racist that any other region of the US.

      • XSE Drake

As someone who grew up in the Northeast and now lives in the South, I can say with 900% certainty that people in the South are FAR more racist than in other parts of the US.

      • Denny

The state with the most Klan members in the Klan’s heyday was Indiana, not to mention that if racism did not exist in the Northeast, Spike Lee wouldn’t have too many subjects for his movies, Gymnosapien XSE Drake.

      • Robert S

Why dont you go spend your welfare check?

      • realtyFan

Debby, the south is incredibly racist – way way way more than other parts of the country.

      • lmnop

I’ve lived all over the country and the south IS the most racist place I have lived. Far more racist than any other place I’ve ever been. The ignorance in the south was actually quite amazing to me when I first moved here. I couldn’t believe it. I kept hearing “the n word” everywhere I went, and the white douchebags saying it were acting like it was no big deal. Not to mention the god-awful confederate flags all over the place.

  • brenda BuBois

Yeah he’s racist, but you two keep calling each other sissies and pansies… you’re just as prejudiced.

    • JRE

Ummm, they were mocking Ben’s other “talent” – calling people pansies and sissies. Quite a member of humanity that Ben!

  • juicehead

He is not saying anthing that is RACIST. He was attacking Yazmin because her behavior was GHETTO. She was being GHETTO TRASH. I am white and grew up in the ghetto. I have seen black, white, latin, etc people act very ghetto. I took myself out of that environment because it pisses me off to see people almost proud of the fact that they are so freaking uneducated and “ghetto”. Yazmin came at him and attacked his character and so he shot back and attacked her. She basically told him “I’m from the hood, don’t mess with me” like she was proud of coming from the hood. He basically told her that is nothing to be proud of. The cool-aid and ketchup sandwich thing was kinda mean to say. But, it wasn’t racial! I’ve eaten ketchup sandwiches and drank plenty of kool-aid. It is a lower income thing. She did brag about being from the hood, it’s not a far leap to assume she grew up poor then, is it?

    • Tardy 4 Da Party

I think the racist part is associating the “Kool Aid & Ketchup” w/ her being “Ghetto Trash” & a “Hooker” all in the same argument. Yes, there was some clever editing to make it seem it was all in one breath. Yet, when he decided to reach into his bag of insults, he had to pull out some real “dirty” sh*t. He was just short of calling her a Bl*ck C*nt!

  • Chris

I love how appalled they are with this guy but do they also realize they have a picture of Michael Richards at the top of the website advertising the Seinfield reunion.

    • leo

      touche

      • Sam

Michael Richards is a Jew. To the Jews Dalton Ross, Eliza, and Josh Wolk this is allowed.
