From the archives: A Q&A with David Letterman's former assistant Stephanie Birkitt

New information in the David Letterman extortion case reported by this afternoon reveals that the main suspect in the alleged crime, Robert “Joe” Halderman, who demanded $2 million to keep quiet about Letterman’s sexual encounters with Late Show staff members, was the boyfriend of Letterman’s former assistant, Stephanie Birkitt. According to a search warrant obtained by Fox 5 New York, Halderman used portions of Birkitt’s diary (reportedly without her consent) as part of the extortion plot. Back in 2002, EW interviewed Birkitt to find out what it was really like to work at The Late Show with Dave: In the Q&A, Birkitt discusses workplace wackiness with Letterman, including an epic pizza-eating dare and an instance where the late-night funnyman asked if he could push her face in a cake. Funny that EW posts this Q and A! This is supposedly the woman that Letterman had the affair with (well at least according to the kind people at TMZ).

I think working for him is probably kinda creepy and harassing, at least for his female employees. I mean, he had affairs with several staff members? To me, that suggests a severe abuse of his power over his employees – even if these encounters were “consensual,” it’s hard not to think there was something else going on.

i met my wife in our office. she was my supervisor. did she severely abuse her power over me? stop trying to make this sleazier than it is. letterman is the victim here.

was your wife sleeping with other men just b/c she was their boss, while she was wooing you? that’s the point, though i’m still a letterman fan.

I remember her. He used to screw up her last name and call her Stephanie “Briquette.”

I thought stephanie was the woman letterman was referring to last night, they seemed close when she was on camera during those “current events” skits

I met my husband in the workplace. For the record, he asked me out, I said yes. Twenty two years and 3 wonderful kids later, I’m glad I said yes. I was his manager. Everyone where I worked at one time or another dated someone on the job. This happens everywhere. Please, two adults having consentual relations. Nothing new.

I feel that Dave done nothing wrong, these ladies had a choice they could have turned him down. They don’t seem to want to make a big deal out of this. Mabye they are the ones that harressed him into having sex with them, I love Dave and I think he done right by coming out right away. You go Dave .
