Susan Boyle: She's coming, America. Brace yourselves.

Susan-Boyle_lShe’s baaaack. Susan Boyle, champion of dowdy songstresses everywhere, is headed to our shores to perform on the Sept. 16 finale of America’s Got Talent, according to our good buddies over at People. Boyle — who didn’t win Britain’s Got Talent but did win the hearts of millions thanks to her stunning debunkment of the popular notion that only pretty people can do things well — will take a break from finishing her debut album (due Nov. 24 and already cleaning up in Amazon pre-orders) to pop over here and show us how it’s done. No word on what she’ll be singing, but the smart money’s on, oh, I don’t know, “I Dreamed A Dream”? People also reports she’s covered Madonna’s “You’ll See” for her record — perhaps we’ll hear that instead?

Who’s excited, America? This lady created such a firestorm earlier this year, generating popularity so enormous she (quite understandably) cracked a bit under the pressure. I for one hope she’s got her feet back underneath her once again — but is everybody still super-jazzed about her existence? Or has our national attention, always so fascinatingly chipmunk-esque in its span, already moved on to other shiny things? Will you be tuning in? And what should she sing?

Games, video cameras, and 'LPs' at Apple -- and the return of Steve Jobs

Categories: Tech, Videogames

new-video-nano_lThe big news out of Apple’s product-launch event today: Steve Jobs was there! The ailing visionary — who’d been out of the public eye for about a year — returned in his typical mock-turtleneck to a huge reception, even if he was delivering slightly less-than-huge news. The biggest announcement? Nanos now come with built-in video cameras: The 8GB/$149 or 16 GB/$179 models both have Flip cam-fighting capabilities (and built-in radios and pedometers, too). The rest of the announcements weren’t earth-shattering, but still, some cool stuff:

Gaming Apple talked a really big talk about making the iPhone/iPod Touch the next handheld gaming device. According to the presentation, there are 607 games for the PSP, 3,680 for the DS, and 21,178 for the iPhone/Touch. It’s not a totally fair comparison, but okay. Developers showed off a few new games, but the biggest stand-out for me was Madden NFL making its way to ye olde iPhone.

LPs Jobs wants to bring back the bonus features that used to come with LPs — think liner notes, photography, etc. iTunes will now features “LP” versions of albums as part of iTunes 9, which is otherwise just a thorough upgrade.

Upgrades iPod Touches just got a bit cheaper: The 8GB is now $199, the 32GB is $299, and the 64GB is $399. And the classic iPod got a memory boost to 160 GB for $249. That’s a lotta hooch GBs. And shuffles will have better headphones.

PopWatchers, as alluring as a video-camera-enabled iPod is, Nanos just don’t have enough memory for me. But is their candy-colored goodness enough to lure you in for an upgrade?

Please, 'A-Team' movie...tell me THIS isn't your B.A.

BA-Baracas-Rampage-Jackson_lI’ve nothing against the UFC or its champions. I’m not a moron: I don’t want to get hurt. But I am hoping for more from director Joe Carnahan and producers Ridley and Tony Scott when it comes to casting their A-Team movie. You’ve got Liam Neeson for Hannibal and Bradley Cooper for Faceman…but now we’re seeing reports that you’ve settled on Quenton “Rampage” Jackson for B.A. Barracus? [Neither 20th Century Fox nor the UFC responded to EW's requests for confirmation.]

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: B.A. (portrayed by Mr. T in the TV series) doesn’t need to be a musclebound mountain of a man. He needs to be scary. Intelligence and ruthlessness are scarier than body mass. And maybe I’m wrong about Jackson and he’d bring everything the role requires — and then some. But I’m just not feeling it. I just hope with the last outstanding role to cast — the loose-cannon Murdock — I’m pleasantly surprised.

How does news of Rampage’s casting sit with you: tired or inspired?

Julie Chen blogs 'Big Brother': Season 11, elimination #9

Categories: Misc.

Julie-Chen_lOkay, it’s late…this blog is going to be turned in late.  I can’t stop watching Sho2 and this CRAZY endurance competition.  These three are troopers, to say the least.  Natalie’s almost fallen twice (as of 10:00 PM PT), but they’re all still hanging in.  Okay, by the time you read this, we’ll all know the end result…but, I’m dying to know how this turns out!

Okay, as I watch, I’ll try to focus.

First off, CONGRATULATIONS to Natalie and Jason on their engagement.  At the end of the day, Big Brother is just a game, but this was huge.  Natalie, whatever happens in the Big Brother house this week, all of us at Big Brother wish you both all the joy and happiness that life has to offer.  Don’t be haters, viewers, this is real life and we should all embrace this event.  Big Brother is a game, their engagement is real…best, again, to both of them.

Natalie on Jason’s  proposal: “He gets on one knee and he proposes.  I had envisioned when I’d get proposed…I would cry, I would yell, I would scream…kicking and screaming like “Hooray!”  And…I was quiet.  I was in shock.  I’ve been in this house for over two months and haven’t even heard his voice….now he’s proposing on one knee?  Is this even happening???  I couldn’t believe it.”

Having said that, back to game play…it’s true, Natalie could have chosen not to walk through the door. Be honest, would you have resisted?  The fact that she gave up the ability to compete in the Power Of Veto…that’s a big OOPS!  Kevin was none too pleased.

Right…back to the HOH Competition… READ FULL STORY »

Didja see? Video ad in this week's issue of EW!

Categories:

Judging by the amount of reader inquiries we’ve  received, it seems word has spread about the very cool, first-ever video ad that appears in some copies of this week’s Entertainment Weekly. The six-page ad insert — for CBS and Pepsi Max — features a wafer-thin, 2.25-inch video player loaded with 40 minutes of full-color video, including clips of CBS shows like The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, NCIS: Los Angeles, and The Good Wife.

Only a limited number of EW subscribers will find the video ad in their mailbox, but you can still see what all the fuss is about in this video, in which CBS honcho George Schweitzer demos the ad:

The tiny video player, created by Americhip, Inc., is the first to be bound into a traditional magazine. Powered by a cell phone-type lithium battery, it plays for about an hour before needing to be recharged via its USB port.

Cesar Millan and Scooby-Doo: Ruh-roh, world's normalest photo

cesar-scooby_lThere’s nothing weird about this photo at all. Nope. Nothing weird about eating a cake replica of yourself, or about acting like Scooby Doo is real, and there’s definitely no strange dissonance between cake Scooby’s canine physicality and guy-in-a-suit Scooby’s human one, nor does the angle of the photo make it look like real Cesar has two right hands. This is just a nice normal photo of normal stuff. READ FULL STORY »

Book a ticket for 'Up in the Air'

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

I’ve been waiting for a glimpse of Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air since it was cast (George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Jason Bateman), and the first clip doesn’t disappoint. It’s just 66 seconds long, but if you thought it impossible to combine the magic of the scar-comparison scene in Jaws with the crackling sexual chemistry in the trunk of Clooney’s getaway car in Out of Sight, well…you’d be wrong.

Are you as smitten as I am, PopWatchers? And will this movie make Farmiga a star?

'America's Got Talent' recap: An easy vote

Truly great performance nights — I remember one or two from the quarterfinal round — are fun to watch but painful to review, the knowledge that only some of the acts will advance forcing you to wonder why the producers didn’t fan out the talent a little more. Then there are nights like Tuesday, where the distinct shortage of memorable acts makes deciding who will go on all the more easy. There isn’t much to debate: Hairo Torres, Barbara Padilla, Recycled Percussion, and EriAm will (and should, by last night’s standards) advance. Led by Hairo, they at least distinguished themselves from a largely forgettable lineup. Up for consideration? Lawrence Beamen and FootworKINGz, two front-runners who last night lost their footing a little bit. Everyone else, well… READ FULL STORY »
