Could 'Gavin & Stacey' be the next 'Office'?

US remakes of British comedies can be hit (The Office) or miss (I still shudder at the thought of Coupling), but I have high hopes for ABC’s planned adaptation of the BBC’s Gavin & Stacey. I’m obsessed with this charming comedy about a Welsh girl and an Essex lad’s romance. Gavin and Stacey themselves mostly play it straight, leaving it to the incredibly rich supporting characters to bring out the laughs. Best are Gavin’s sparkly housewife mom Pam, his beer-loving best friend Smithy, Stacey’s tough, promiscuous best friend Nessa, and her geeky Uncle Bryn (played in the British version by brilliant Rob Brydon). The Welsh-Essex stereotypes will have to be transplanted somewhere in the States for the culture clashes to have the same comedy effect. This IS possible — I remember the fear when David Brent of Slough’s Wernam-Hogg was going to have to be Americanized – but he became the brilliant Michael Scott of Scranton’s Dunder Mifflin.

Have you seen the original Gavin & Stacey on BBC America? Watch this clip, then tell us which American actor you think could take on the meaty (in more ways than one) role of Smithy. I’d vote for Zach Galifianakis, but he might be too in-demand after The Hangover.

'Glee' recap: Acafellas bring down the house!

glee_lI didn’t think it was possible, PopWatchers, but I now love Glee even more! Last night’s episode may have even trumped last week’s season premiere. I mean, they covered Bell Biv Devoe AND Color Me Badd!!! How can you NOT love this show! Is it wrong that I kinda would buy an Acafellas album? I thought they were so adorable. And their renditions of “This is How We Do It,”  “Poison,” and “I Wanna Sex You Up” were actually really good.

But the thing that I loved most about this episode was that it gave the spotlight to characters who hadn’t had big moments yet. Matthew Morrison, for one, really came alive last night. He just showed what a charismatic performer he is. And hello Mark Salling, aka Puck. Or I guess I should say hello Mark Salling’s abs. Sweet mercy. I think it’s kinda hilarious that he joined Acafellas just to meet cougars. READ FULL STORY »

Your say: All celebrity deaths are created equal

Categories: Made Us Think

Made Us ThinkToday’s “Made Us Think” post comes Dale, who read PopWatch’s preview of EW’s Patrick Swayze cover story and lamented that certain celebrities’ deaths seem to get more attention from the media than others:

“Michael Jackson’s death was a tragedy, but he got all the attention. When people like Patrick Swayze, Farrah Fawcett die, they are not shown the same compassion. Patrick was a loving and humble man and he fought a brave fight. I am a three year cancer survivor and know how difficult cancer can be.”

Dale’s post made us think: Is it fair that the more unexpected celebrity deaths, like Jackson’s, tend to stir up more of a media fanfare than the passing of those whose terminal illnesses had been well-publicized ahead of time? What do you think?

Amy Poehler's Paula Adbul impression: inaccurate yet hilarious

Amy Poehler will be on Bravo’s Inside the Actors’ Studio on Monday, Sept. 21 (DVR…set), and even though her Paula Abdul impression isn’t very good, it is awesome:

The Walken is pretty terrible, too, but this faux Paula quote just about killed me: “I understand that you’re an amazing person, and you bring love to so many people. And it’s what’s great about you, is you’re just, you’re joy, you’re joy…thing. You’re just filled with it. As long as people keep reaching for the stars, and as long as I have stars in my sky, and as long as love is what keeps us together, and as long as people keep singing and dancing, then forever the skies and love and people.”

PopWatchers, can you top the majestic poetry of Paula Abdul?

Your say: Where are all the female filmmakers?

Categories: Made Us Think

MadeUsThink2Today’s Made Us Think comment comes from “Elly,” who writes in response to Missy Schwartz’s interview with Jane Campion,

“I suspect a large reason there are so few well-known female filmmakers may be that so many female writers, directors etc. are too focused on the lack of “just for women” entertainment, and so tend to turn out stuff with distinct agendas for distinct female audiences — i.e. the ‘empowerment’ Campion spoke of — instead of just focusing on making a good product. I see it all the time in books – I rarely read sci-fi or fantasy by female authors, because the story is usually just there as a weak afterthought to help move the rant along, the real point of the book being to obsess over what patriarchal pigs men can be. Case in point: Margaret Atwood.”

That’s one theory, and it certainly got us thinking. What about you?

'The Jay Leno Show,' night 3: You in?

The Jay Leno Show dropped 40 percent of its audience from night 1 to night 2, according to Nielsen’s final numbers. That sounds like a reason for scripted showrunners to rejoice, but hold on: its 11.1 million viewers Tuesday at 10 p.m. still tops the performance of its former time slot occupant, Law & Order: SVU, which averaged 9.3 million viewers last season. (Sadtrombone.com) How will Leno do on night 3 with in-studio guest Robin Williams, “10 at 10″ participant Miley Cyrus, and Aussie comedian/correspondents Hamish and Andy introducing America to the phenomenon “Ghosting” (spoiler below)? Plus, Leno’s only up against a Numb3rs repeat and a new 20/20, so if his numbers aren’t up then showrunners definitely have reason to celebrate.

'Big Brother 11's' Natalie and Kevin: Can you be a finalist...and still be a loser?

Categories: Big Brother, Reality TV

Oh, parting is such sorrow – NOT! Foes of Natalie Martinez – the 24-year-old Tae Kwon Do expert from Arizona – may have hated watching the slippery little snake win $50,000, but even second place comes with a price. Here, Martinez talks about how she thinks America perceived her game play while Kevin Campbell, the 29-year-old graphic designer from Chula Vista, CA, manages to find comfort in knowing that while he may have come in (cash-free) third place, he still did gays proud while living in the Big Brother house (at least, that’s what he thinks). After watching, see what America’s favorites had to say in my chat with Jordan and Jeff, then check out my finale interview with executive producer Allison Grodner.

Political sitcom in the works: All those in favor...

freshmen-congressfolk_lABC has a D.C.-set sitcom in the works from Friends and How I Met Your Mother alum Greg Malins and, er, Arianna Huffington. Freshmen will follow three newbie representatives — two men and a woman — who share a house. (And more! I’m guessing.)

Malins told Variety that he “always knew [he] wanted to do a show” in DC, and that “once [he] discovered that members of Congress often live together,” he knew he was set. He might have “discovered” this one of the nine billion times it’s been written about in the New York Times alone, all of which mention its sitcommy potential. But okay.

Freshmen is the latest in a string of politically-oriented shows in development: Earlier this summer, Body Politic, The CW’s would-be D.C. series, didn’t get past the pilot stage, but CBS’s House Rules (starring Anna Chlumsky) is still in the works.

I feel compelled to give all political series at least a try, so if Freshmen ever makes it to air, I hereby pledge to watch it at least a few times. I wonder, though, if a political show without a political perspective — the characters will be a Democrat, a Republican, and an independent — will just seem watered down.

What about you, PopWatchers? Does Freshmen get your vote?

Adam Shankman as permanent 'SYTYCD' judge: Yay?

Adam-Shankman_lHoly déjà vu! Do you remember last week, when American Idol announced they were adding a new permanent judge on their panel? (Of course you do.) Well, everyone’s favorite dance competition, So You Think You Can Dance, has decided to do the same thing. Their pick: Hairspray director, and longtime guest judge, Adam Shankman.

Of course, this recent decision brings up a question: Will the series continue their tradition of inviting a guest judge each week, thereby bringing the panel total to four? Judge Nigel Lythgoe told TVGuide.com, “We’ll have an empty chair and that empty chair can be filled, I hope one day, by Paula Abdul and by lots of other people…The trouble is, the minute you pull four judges like American Idol, you’re just opening up the program and not dealing with what you should be dealing with, which is the talent.”

So, I’m guessing the answer is…yes…or maybe no? Not too sure—Lythgoe’s answer is a little like a hip-hop routine choreographed to Air Supply: confusing. Either way, I’m conflicted. I do enjoy Shankman’s critiques—even when they are, at times, somewhat misguided—and this move will thankfully keep him too busy to chase his unfortunate passion: shooting inappropriate photos of underage country starlets. But at the same time, the thought of not having a weekly guest judge like Mia Michaels or Debbie Allen to sober up the panel kind of brings me down like a Tyce Diorio number. As does the thought of having four judges who will likely eat up time that’s better spent with the contestants (or with the delicious Cat, for that matter).

PopWatchers, and fellow SYTYCD fans: are you happy with this decision? Or are you kind of in my club: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?
