Clip du jour: Jay Leno's reading of 'Hamlet' is different from mine

Hamlet, arguably the greatest play in history, is the one where the guy sleeps with his mother. That’s why Freud called it a Hamlet complex, right?

Yeah, those kids today with their Twitters and their loud music, what a bunch of idiots! Better luck next time, Jay. [via HuffPo]

Sissy Spacek heading to 'Big Love'

Categories: Big Love

Sissy-Spacek_lSissy Spacek is heading to Big Love for a multi-episode arc, according to the LA Times. She’ll “play a powerful Washington D.C. lobbyist.”

This just in: Big Love‘s cast is amazing. I’m guessing Spacek will be some sort of gaming lobbyist, but honestly, she could play a lobbyist for the cabbage industry and I wouldn’t care — I just can’t wait for this show to come back. The show’s had a steady and spectacular upwards trajectory, and last season’s road-trip arc provided some of the most emotionally resonant hours of TV I’ve seen in years.

Big Love doesn’t have a firm premiere date yet, PopWatchers, but I’m excited nonetheless. Are you optimistic about Spacek’s role, or do you think the cast is big enough as-is?

Oprah's 'Mad Men'-inspired '60s-themed episode: Putting the 'O' in Retro

Categories: Mad Men, Oprah Winfrey

Mad-Men-Oprah_lOprah is on a roll. The Whitney Houston interview, the closing-downtown-Chicago spectacle, Mariah Carey’s upcoming performance — it’s almost like she’s the most powerful woman in media or something. But next week, she’s making a weird choice and doing an entire Mad Men-geared 1960s episode, complete with “what would have been her ‘Favorite Things’ from the 1960s,” according to a press release.

Wheee doggies. I wonder if the O is going to cover the whole decade, or focus on the parts Mad Men has covered already (just through June 1963 so far). I’m hoping the favorites include The Feminine Mystique, which was released in 1963; the Beatles, zip codes, The Sound of Music, the right to counsel, Vatican II, space exploration, and, you know, civil rights. At least those are some of my favorite things from the 1960s.

Given Oprah’s previous lists of favorite things, though, there’s definitely going to be more fashion and food items making the cut. Pillbox hats? The minidress? Foodwise, the 1960s saw the emergence of Julia Child (Mastering the Art of French Cooking was published in ’61, and The French Chef started airing in 1963), a newly expansive array of breakfast cereals (Lucky Charms, Apple Jacks, Product 19, Total, Kaboom, Frosted Mini-Wheats), and the rapid rise of the aluminum can.

PopWatchers, gaze into your Oprah crystal ball: What do you think her favorite things from the 1960s will be?

'Community': Get to know Gillian Jacobs, Joel McHale's love interest

Gillian-Jacobs_lFinally! Community, the ensemble comedy starring Joel McHale and Chevy Chase about a group of misfits who attend Greendale Community College and find each other in a Spanish study group, premieres tonight (NBC, 9:30 p.m. ET). This afternoon, we’re getting to know Gillian Jacobs, the Juilliard grad with great taste in comedy, who plays Britta, the hard-to-get woman who inspires McHale’s character Jeff, a lawyer sent back to college after it’s revealed his law degree is fake, to start said study group. (Their Spanish professor, Señor Chang, is played by The Hangover‘s Ken Jeong, so they really do need each other.)

• Yes, she was a fan of the The Soup before she met McHale, and their chemistry was instant. “He’s so at ease that he puts you at ease. He’s just like giving s— to the casting director, throwing out lines. With those funny guys, you just got to be ready to play ball with them, and if you’re as game as they are, then you’ll be fine. Thank god sometimes something occurs to me to say in response.” The only problem: McHale is a foot taller than her. “I stand on boxes some times for close-ups of the two of us. I have to wear high heels all the time, which is not my favorite part of the show. They even taped on another inch of foam to platform flip-flops. I’m walking around in these flip-flops when I’m off-camera [mimes teetering], like, Damn his freakish height! [Creator] Dan Harmon has promised me they’ll dig a trench at some point for Joel to walk in so I’m not holding my breath when I’m walking.” READ FULL STORY »

Battle of the sexes: Does your significant other have a favorite movie that makes you cringe?

holiday-happy-gilmore_lI adore my wife. And I adore Kate Winslet. (For the record, in that order.) But something happens to my internal organs whenever my lovely turns on The Holiday, a recent cable television staple. It’s simply a film I can’t abide, and I don’t think I can explain my revulsion rationally. I’m actually a great admirer of several of that film’s actors, but even their performances inexplicably make me, well, aggressively irritated. For my wife, however, The Holiday (pictured, left) is comfort viewing. It doesn’t matter which scene is playing when she tunes in, she’s hooked until the closing credits. I imagine it has something to do with the vicarious thrill of living in Cameron Diaz’s spacious L.A. pad or canoodling with Jude Law in an English hamlet. My reaction is quite different, and if I’m unfortunate enough to be around for the scene where Jack Black be-bops a medley of movie soundtracks at the music store, the battle for control of the remote becomes downright physical. 'Newlywed Game': The first gay couple will be...'Star Trek' star George Takei and hubby Brad Altman!

Categories: Games, Television

george-takei-altman_lThat’s right, the Associated Press reports that Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei, will boldly go where no gay man has gone before: The Newlywed Game. An upcoming celebrity edition of the venerable game show (now on GSN) will feature the Star Trek legend and gay-rights activist answering blush-worthy questions with his partner of 22 years, Brad Altman. While no fewer than five iterations of The Newlywed Game have been on the air since the show premiered in 1967, none has ever featured a same-sex couple — presumably due to a show rule allowing only couples with legal marriage licenses. But Takei and Altman were married last September in Los Angeles, granting them all the same benefits as a traditional couple, including the right to mildly humiliate yourself by dishing about “making whoopee” on national television.

Anybody else excited to watch this?

Fun fact: Takei and Altman aren’t actually the first same-sex couple to play The Newlywed Game on TV— they’re just the first couple to appear on the show itself. Don’t believe me? Check out the Ellen clip from March of this year after the jump to watch Ms. DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, try their own luck at the game. And yes, they do talk about whoopee…Whoopi Goldberg, that is. READ FULL STORY »

What's a 'Mamma Mia' sequel without ABBA?

Categories: Movies, Music

mama-mia_lCan there be such a thing as a Mamma Mia sequel without ABBA music? Maybe. First Meryl Streep teased that she’d welcome a sequel to the smash movie musical, as long as all the film’s male actors returned. Then, ABBA chieftain Benny Andersson seemed to shoot down the possibility by insisting that his band’s music would not be involved in any follow-up. And now, Colin Firth, in Toronto to promote Tom Ford’s A Single Man, shared with Collider.com that “people who do want to make [a sequel] are considering the possibility of using another band’s music.” (Universal had no comment on Firth’s statements.) 'People' mag's Best-Dressed Women of 2009: Yay or nay?

Categories: Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion

Just off the heels of the VMAs’ buzzworthy red carpet and just as New York Fashion Week comes to a close, it seems like perfect timing for People‘s rankings of the best dressed of the year. The list sticks to most of the usual suspects and my own perennial faves like Kate Winslet for best red carpet, Cameron Diaz for best jeans and Michele Obama for best accessible glamor, because really, what fashion roster doesn’t have the first lady on it these days?

But my favorite has to be best street chic winner Beyonce, who consistently wows us with her bold accessories and always put-together style. Another notable nod? Taylor Swift for best sparkle. Her glittery pieces, by designers like Kaufman Franco, who designed her VMAs stunner, and Naeem Khan, have turned this teen queen into a certified glamazon. Sure, everyone was talking about her Kanye debacle, but the country crooner’s gown was one of the most talked-about looks on the red carpet

People covers all the heavy hitters but three other lovely ladies came to mind when I was conjuring up my own list of the best dressed, like Leighton Meester, who has upped the couture factor with choices like the striped Louis Vuitton ruffle dress and Brian Atwood platforms (pictured) she wore to this year’s Teen Choice Awards. Such a fashion do!

Other faves? Two quiet fashionistas who made a roar on the red carpet recently: Rachel McAdams and Diane Kruger. For McAdams, The Time Traveler’s Wife press junkets were the perfect opportunity to show off her sexy, sophisticated style. Former model Kruger, on the other hand, is all about the structured edge, and as we saw from the red carpets of Inglourious Basterds, she was rockin’ it.

What do you think of People‘s best dressed list? Who else do you think should’ve made the cut?
