Beat Cop: It's a TV watch just for you, procedurals fans!

Filed under: Castle, Television and tagged: , , , ,

House-Hugh-Laurie-premiere_lOur time has come, procedural watchers. This is Beat Cop, and it’s our TV watch. Well, it’s a mini-watch…in PopWatch…and we’ll cover lots of shows instead of getting all precious about just Lost or Fringe, but we’re doing God’s work here, ladies and gents.

No really! The hallmark of the procedural fan is that we have an overdeveloped sense of justice. We seek resolution, answers. We like our bad guys nabbed, diseases diagnosed, cases closed. It’s not that we mind continuing storylines—we like our cops, docs, investigators, and fake psychics to have personalities (even Columbo had a missus to whom he frequently referred, even if her spin-off wasn’t quite worthy of the man, himself). But there’s something about wrapping up misery and mystery in a neat little bow at the end of an hour that just feels satisfying.

So here’s what we’ll do: We’ll meet here twice a week (let’s start with Mondays and Fridays and see how that goes) and discuss our favorite procedurals. It’ll be a mix of review and preview, in that if I’ve seen an episode, I’ll tell you about it in as spoiler-free a manner as possible. Otherwise, we’ll just chat about what happened on CSI, Lie to Me, NCIS, and myriad other shows. Understand, though, this is an advocacy blog, which means I’m not even aiming for fair. I’ll talk about Castle more than I should because I adore that show (seriously, the chemistry between Nathan Fillion and Molly C. Quinn makes them cutest damned father/daughter pair on television). I’ll coo over Criminal Minds Kirsten Vangsness’s flirty banter with Shemar Moore, and make snippy comments that Richard Belzer and Ice-T don’t get nearly enough face time on Law and Order: SVU. I’ll ask you to explain–since somebody needs to tell me–why I just can’t seem to get into Cold Case even though I watch literally every other network procedural out there. We’ll talk. Your say: Unexpected sex symbols are the best kind of sex symbols!

Made Us ThinkToday’s “Made Us Think” post comes from the message boards at Dave Karger’s Oscar Watch blog, where a video interview with Colin Firth, winner of the Best Actor trophy at the Venice Film Festival for A Single Man, prompted a spicy discussion about non-traditional hotties. A reader named Deb had this to say about the Bridget Jones’s Diary star:

“There is something about Colin Firth that just makes him one of the sexiest men today…it isn’t obvious, he doesn’t work at it, he isn’t traditionally a gorgeous man, but when he gives that special smile, your heart just melts watching him. I loved him in Bridget Jones’s Diary and everything I have seen him in since.

Are you a big Colin Firth fan? Which other unexpected sex symbols get your heart racing? Sound off in the comments section below, and make us think! (And after the jump, check out Dave’s interview with the talented Mr. Firth!) READ FULL STORY »

'Curb Your Enthusiasm' season premiere recap: Larry's hot and bothered

Curb-Your-Enthusiasm_lC’mon, admit it, you missed that constantly bothered, constantly blamed man we love to watch flounder at the mercy of society. Larry David is back, and unlike Cheryl David’s low tolerance, I personally can never get “too much Larry.”  With most of the colorful players that make up Larry’s easily offended world in tow (and then some), and Larry just being…Larry, the first episode of the seventh season did not disappoint.

As season six ended in 2007 with the sudden spark between Loretta Black and Larry at a Bat Mitzvah, the season premiere began with Larry arguing with a bedridden Loretta over the subject of a comfortable room temperature for the house. Seventy-five degrees??? That’s way too warm! Yep, he’s back alright. As we soon found out (surprise, surprise) Larry was not in it for the long haul with Loretta, as he discussed with Jeff and Susie the urgency of breaking up with her before her biopsy results come back. Duh, you can’t break up with someone with cancer!

Larry chose another battle when he called out Dr. Ball as he helped himself to Larry’s lemonade. Rude. But even Jeff admitted when it comes to helping yourself to someone else’s food and drink, “liquids are okay.” Of course. Everyone knows that. Then Larry made a monumental empty gesture mistake, as he flippantly offered to help Marty Funkhouser with his mentally disturbed sister. And as all Curb fans know, of course Funkhouser took Larry up on his offer, and of course our anti-hero subsequently found himself up to his ears in the disapproving glare and shaking heads of all his friends (although I’m not so sure he’d call them that). 'Dancing With the Stars,' 'House,' 'Heroes,' and 'How I Met Your Mother': What to watch tonight?

House-Mother_lFirst I spotted Halloween candy at CVS. Then I saw a leaf on the ground. Then I wore a sweatshirt under a jacket (best day of the year). But now I know for sure that it’s fall, because there is way too much TV on at 8 p.m. tonight. In a good way. What to watch? DVR? Skip? Save? Let’s break it down….

‘DANCING WITH THE STARS’, two-hour premiere, ABC
Reasons to watch: This could be your only chance to see Tom DeLay on the dance floor. (Although something tells me it will be on The Soup and perhaps The Daily Show….)
Reasons to skip: DWTS is on again tomorrow and Wednesday. Tonight’s the men, tomorrow’s the women, Wednesday is a results show and tribute to Patrick Swayze, and watching all three might put you in severe dance overload. Also, yeargh, the early rounds are boring. READ FULL STORY »

'Green Porno': Isabella Rossellini wraps series with book

Filed under: Television and tagged: , ,

Green Porno, Isabella Rossellini’s Webby Award-winning series on the mating habits of animals, is coming to an end — but it’s going out with a bang. Season three (watch it now online) debuts on Sundance Channel tonight at 8 p.m. ET, and, a glossy photo book that comes with the series’ 18 episodes on DVD, arrives on shelves tomorrow. The four latest episodes feature the vibrant costumes and fantastical reenactments that we’ve come to expect from Rossellini’s provocative series, as well as the addition of expert marine biologist Dr. Claudio Campagna. “The new season has a much more explicit environmental message,” Rossellini says. “It’s interesting to make people laugh and give them a little bit of information, but obviously, the Net and the book allow you a bigger format.” READ FULL STORY »

January Jones and Olivia Wilde: When good TV gowns get not-so-flattering close-ups

January-Jones-emmys_lMany readers have pointed out that in my roundup of the best and worst fashions from last night’s Emmy telecast, I left January Jones off the list.  Some thought she should be a worst for her “Jetson corset” (thank you Judy H) while others say they would have named her a best for her gown’s “Chrysler-Building-retro-futuristic awesome” vibe (according to Stan).  I was actually really impressed by the architectural bodice of January’s Versace gown and the freshness of her whole look… until I saw a closeup (pictured, left).  You see those little peach squares in her top?  That’s not cool Art Deco tiling or even flesh-toned material – that’s actual flesh.  The baring of random bits of her midriff in an otherwise elegant gown gave me pause – not enough to call it a worst, mind you, but just enough to hold me back from besting it.  This was not unlike seeing Olivia Wilde’s wild decoupage gown up close (pictured, right) and realizing that the entire netted back and nude zipper made the dress seem like something that could have been plucked from Nancy Kerrigan’s closet.  But unless Ryan Seacrest wrangled these stars into his “Glam Cam 360,” the average at-home-not-working-on-deadline viewer might not even notice these zoomed-in situations until they got highlighted on the Internet the next morning.Olivia-Wilde_l

You can look for an entire graded breakdown of the Emmy red carpet – including Ms. Jones – in this week’s issue of EW, but in the meantime, my question for you, readers: Do you think a great red carpet gown is meant to be a Monet (as Cher Horowitz once said, “Seen from far away, it’s okay, but up close, it’s a big old mess”) or is the beauty (or lack thereof) in the details?

'Castle' raconteur Nathan Fillion: A man-crush, explained

Yes, that is my fancy-dancy way of saying that Nathan Fillion did indeed take the Twitter bait and drop by the EW offices late last week. (And explaining to my wife -- and recent Firefly devotee -- the nature of said man-crush.) He could not have been a more gracious guest: He fielded questions from the staff on everything from his One Life to Live days (in his words, he played "Stinky Joey Buchanan"), his time on Firefly ("the best job I have ever or will ever have"), how best to describe Castle ("sexy, sexy, sexy...and sexy"), and if he'd consider playing a villain again ("Yes. What's next?"). All of this after taking the red-eye to NYC Thursday night and then doing Good Morning America bright and too-damned-early Friday morning. But I'll tell you whut: A sleepy Nathan Fillion will still get the job done. (And will still be nine feet taller than me.)

Mandi Bierly will be attentively watching tonight's Castle premiere -- my "relationship" with Nathan has rendered me unfit for that duty -- so check back tomorrow for her take. And the first season's on DVD tomorrow...relish in its plumminess.

I can't thank the dude enough for playing along with my inane Twitter shenanigans, as well as those of you who picked up the baton and virtua-pestered him to stop by, too. Together, we can do anything, people! (Provided, of course, that "anything" means getting super-cool actors who are already coming to NYC to visit a mass entertainment publication.)

So, who else should we get to stop by? Who's on your wish list for me to meet and, potentially, be dwarfed/embarrassed by?

'Grey Gardens' wins Emmy, but Drew Barrymore was robbed!

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

A big congrats to the entire team involved in HBO’s Grey Gardens, which won 6 Emmys last night including Best TV Movie (if you haven’t seen it, it’s now on DVD so there’s no excuse!). The amazingly talented Jessica Lange took home the Best Actress in a TV Movie award for her role as Big Edie and it was definitely a deserving performance. But I kinda feel like Drew Barrymore, who was borderline revelatory as Lil Edie and up for the same lead actress trophy, was sorta robbed. Both women gave undeniably incredible performances. I just simply thought Barrymore had the trickier role and showed range we hadn’t really seen yet in her other films. Watch the trailer below for a glimpse of Barrymore’s utter transformation.

What do you think PopWatchers? Did Drew deserve to win? Or was Jessica the better Garden girl?

Joel McHale's living of two dreams = one of our dreams

Joel McHale lived out two of his dreams on last Thursday’s Today Show: delivering a totally legit report of the national weather with Al Roker and throwing the broadcast over to renowned jelly lover Willard Scott. Oddly enough, it’s been one of our dreams to see all of this happen in the setting of The Soup! Press play for a master class in why some people’s audio should never be cut. Even on live TV. Especially if the overlapping voices accompany a full-screen graphic of Smucker’s Strawberry Preserves. Happy Smucker’s Year (?!), P-Dubs.
