Saturday Night Live tackled President Obama’s “full Ginsburg,” or when a politician or talking head appears on five Sunday morning talk shows, in last night’s Weekend Update Thursday. Fox News was left out of the mix, despite the network’s dedication to fairness and balance, but Jason Sudeikis’ impression of Time Magazine cover boy Glenn Beck captured why the prez may have avoided that particular network. No tears from Sudeikis, but he nailed Beck’s manic energy.
Did you find the humor in Sudeikis’ impersonation as funny as I did, or would you prefer the comedy show made a greater effort to be “fair and balanced” in their skits? (To be fair, they did lampoon Keith Olbermann last season with equal relish.)

I would say that Sudeikis’ performance was dead on, in terms of style, but a misfire in terms of content. Say what you will about Beck, but give the guy his props–the content of his show has more substance than an episode of “Church Chat.” Otherwise, Van Jones, Yosi Sergant, and ACORN would not have been fired or distanced from the current White House.
Of course, the other problem for Sudeikis is that Beck, unaltered, knows how to get laughs and shock value, that filtered Beck simply cannot. (Witness his fake frog toss on Wednesday). Can the SNL writers come up with a stunt that drives up viewership due to YouTube buzz? Me.Thinks.Not.

Stephanie, I dispute your point. It may have been true, sometime in the near past, that SNL (and Stewart, and Colbert, and Maher) are not traditional news outlets. But you cannot detract the powerful impact their satire has had in the last few elections. Geez, most people thought Sarah Palin said “I can see Russia from my HOUSE!” when it was Tina Fey. I thought the Beck spoof was spot-on. Unfortunately, most of the episode was just plain unfunny. The “spoof” of Gov. David Paterson is still stupid and borderline offensive, and were they so starved for material that they had to go back to Bill Clinton? Pity.

The Glenn Beck impression was spot-on and hilarious. I don’t really watch SNL, but if they do more stuff like that (and the equally hilarious Olbermann skit) I might tune in.
I thought the Beck piece was very funny, but I do think SNL needs to find a way to make fun of Obama. Some of SNL’s best work over the years has been presidential parody (Chevy Chase’s Ford, Dana Carvey’s Bush Sr, and Will Ferrell’s George W.). The Obama skits right now are just lazy and uncreative.
I think this is great. If the elitist, out of touch, self indulgent entertainment industry finds something worth lampooning then Glenn Beck must be doing something right.

A month, and Obama came out saying he had done what he wanted to do. Then the number started rising again. Obamam made a massive deal about the recession being over only to discover that it’s not. Maybe we ought to have pictures of him with a big sign behind him saying, “Mission Accomplished” because that is exactly what he did. The only difference is there is no way at all to justify his statement while you could make a semantic argument Bush was right.

Dude, the amendments are part of the constitution and nowhere has Glenn made any argument that we should get rid of the amendments. To do that we would have to get rid of gun rights and even for someone on the far left (I’m not saying you in particular are), you have to admit that is not what Glenn wants.
What he wants is to get back to the Constitution, including the amendments, and away from the intrusive, big-government philosophy that has been allowed to grow up without meaningful challenge.

Here’s your proof. I heard Beck say verbatim on his show, “there is not one single Americann in this country that actually wants harm to come to the president.” However the Secret Service report that threats to Obama are more than any other president. I personally would believe the secret service.
To be exact, the secret service said that the number of threats is up by 400% over the last president. But I guess Glenn Beck knows something the secret service does not.

Fallacy #1: To be a Libertarian you have to agree with every single portion of the platform. Just as not every Democrat agrees with every single fact of the Democrat Platform and not every Republican agrees with the entirety of the Republican platform, it is not necessary to agree with every fact of the Libertarian platform in order to call oneself a Libertarain.
Fallacy #2: The Libertarian platform says that it is not the government’s job to license ANY personal relationships. To a Libertarian, marriage is a religious or private institution, it is not something the government should regulate. Therefore, gay marriage is not something the government should either promote or provide, just as hetero-marriage is not something the government should regulate.
Fallacy #3: Free Trade and migration are pillars of Beck’s philosophy. But you should highlight the “we support control over the entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a threat to security, health and property.” In order to effectively protect against those groups, one must know exactly who is coming into the country so that one has a chance to determine a threat level and then allow or deny access to the country. Glenn has never opposed immigration or free trade. He has, however, opposed a refusal to enforce border codes so that we know who is entering the country and who is not (in order that we might determine threat level to any of the categories mentioned) and has opposed offering benefits to those who skirt proper entry procedures and who, by doing so, cause harm to security, health, and property.
Maybe you should read more carefully, or at least consider the implications of the things you are reading.
However, essential to Libertarianism is the maximization of individuatlity and the minimization of the role of the state. One cannot claim to be a libertarian when he only applies it to economic issues, but then conveniently decide that the government not only can, but should be very intrusive in personal matters, telling people what they can and cannot do. Similarly I would not call a democrat a libertarian just because he agrees with libertarian social policies, but not with libertarian economic policies.
To fight big government on the economic front while trying to impose governmental regulations on the social front is far more characteristic of conservativism than libertarianism.
Gay marriage and abortion are, without a doubt, personal matters. The belief that the state does have the right to govern us in these matters is absolutely not libertarian.

During the Swine Flu scare Beck blamed illegal immigration as the cause of the disease crossing US borders, and even went so far as to hint at a potential terrorist plot, when in fact the culprits were schoolgirls from the States, returning from a vacation to Mexico.

It’s unfortunate that the uninformed get to vote, there should be a test (which would actually be constitutional because we are specifically supposed to have an informed electorate). I’ve met more people that fall on the Republican/conservative side of things that were ignorant, uninformed, blind followers, or in some cases just plain stupid, than I have Democrats/liberals (not to say that there aren’t people that fall into the aforementioned categories in the left either, or to say that there aren’t intelligent conservatives and republicans with valid ideas). There are idiots a-plenty all around, on both sides of the fence. I think the notion that some sort of test or assessment to see who was worthy to vote is only a sign of further stupidity.
