Bye, Jeff! This season is officially done for me. To sit and watch a bunch of hateful, racist idiotic losers take over the show is not my idea of entertainment. This season should have been called “Survivor Hell”. Adios!
So I guess it’s back to Leave It To Beaver and Gilligan’s Island reruns for you. Bye, Roland.
LOL Greg. Hey Roland, the world is full of hateful, racist people. Shining a light on them only makes that more evident. Bye Betsy–you had three strikes against you (1) Older woman; (2) Cop; and (3) from New England. No New Englander, except for Boston Rob, has ever made it beyond the first few episodes for some reason. She was too smart and ER knew it and took out the remaining 1st half of his so-called “alliance”. Bad boy, bad boy…loved her voting comments about Ben!
Ooh, Greg – that was so funny! Did your mommy help you spell all the big words?
oooh roland.. which word was ‘big’? Gilligan or Beaver? nice comeback.
Thanks
Yes ,Yasmine was irritating but I do draw the line at the statements made by Ben and he also had no problem tripping another cast member. This just shows that there may be a hint of racism.,not just with him but with all of the other cast members who heard the statements and thought it was funny or there was nothing wrong with his words.I love the reality show and I have watched survivor since day 1 but as African Americans we need to realize that we are sterotyped so much on television. Not all blacks that live in the inner city drink kool aid.Even with freedom of speech ,I believed this statement should be edited out,but then I realized It is good for our young African Americans to see that true racism is alive and well. After having 3 finalist that were African American and watching how the other losers didn’t want to give their vote to any of them I am convinced Yasmine or the other two will even get close to the end.
Take care Roland. True fans realize it is just a game and don’t take things so seriously.
Krusty, you’re forgetting Bob Crowley! And I co-sign JMW.
Residents of New Orleans might have a different take on what should or should not have been taken seriously to this point. And thats coming from the biggest Boston Rob fan around and someone who thought Coach was fantastic. Laughing about Katrina, and using it to further your game, is not outside the rules. Just dont be surprised when you are despised, or when fans post comments that your an pr–k
JMW – thanks for the civil post and for putting things in perspective. I really thought about it and you’re right – I’m really not a “true” fan of the show. I’ve never truly cared about who wins the million – for me it’s always been how the season plays itself out. Early on I realized that Survivor is a game where virtues become vices and the other way around. Rarely does the “nice” person win. But after enduring this summer’s crop of racists, bullies and morons on Big Brother I really wasn’t ready to go through the same thing on Survivor. I don’t know – it just seems more mean-spirited this go-around. Sure, there have been other villains in other seasons, but we saw them gradually develop over the season. This time it felt like a big neon arrow pointed to Russell with “VILLAIN!” flashing on and off. It just seemed so blatant. Anyway, just wanted to say ‘thanks’ and for the true fans of the show, enjoy!

I don’t mean to speak for Jeff, but I’d guess they only have one challenge for the first few episodes to give the audience more time to get to know the characters. If there were two challenges during this episode we wouldn’t have been treated to either Shambo’s “good news” or to Jeff’s smooth shake off of Ben’s sissy comment.
Sure, it sucked seeing Betsy go. But Liz and Russell are very smart. Keep the wise, mature, likeable police officer, or the predictable, irritating kid? It doesn’t seem like much of a decision to me. My pick for winner right now is Liz. Russell is oing to get to carried away with his scheming, whereas i think Liz will remain much more level headed. But props for finding the immunity idol…pretty impressive, you gotta admit.
Carl i can’t help but agree with your take on Liz. I think she may be under the radar to a degree, what with such other big personalities still around. But she is smart to align with Russell & and when he starts crumbling, I believe she has a good chance at being set up to go far. As much as I liked Betsey, from a game perspective I think Liz did make the right choice. But now she has to contend with those nasty guys for longer – hope she can prevail.
Thanks for the blog Jeff – I really enjoy this on my Fridays at work!
Curt, I read on Fridays at work also, and most of my co-workers think I’m crazy becuase I’m always laughing out loud at most of the comments which I love to read everyone’s opinion, to me makes my Fridays that much more enjoyable, so that i can start my week of waiting for another episode. Also Jeff Congrats on the Emmy, you really deserve it Mr Dimples.
First..! I was disappointed in the beginning song..at the climax of the song, there is usually like a shark jumping on the beat or a snake snapping on the beat or a whale out of the water on the beat..that’s the best part.!!! Editors screwed up the beginning this time..!!! Regarding blog..always entertaining..nobody is better for Survivor than Jeff..hope it never ends..!!
Darling Jeff. You deserved your Emmy but Survivor will never win because it relies too much on editing to make it interesting.
Viewers never had a chance to form an opinion of Russell (and many others) because we were told in advance what to expect. This season really confirms that Survivor is The Breakfast Club of reality shows.
Breakfast Club was an awesome movie.
And annual Emmy favourite “Amazing Race” isn’t all about editing? Seriously? Puh-leeze. Imagine “Race” playing out in real time. Then imagine paint drying…
Just to be clear, I actually like “Race”. I just think “Survivor” gets an undeserved bad rap for stuff like creating characters & narrative through the edit. ALL reality shows do this. I happen to think “Survivor” does it really well, though.
Hi Jeff,
Love you, hate this season’s show. Only 1 challenge? Boring! Limits should be set for racial stereotyping, eg. Ben to Yasmin. Remember you have young people watching. Everything seems to be moving in slow motion because the other tribe has not be mentioned offten, no mention of people’s hardships, on trying to survive, simply, showcasing the little guy with the bad attitude. Don’t want to invoke his name. You know what I mean.
Please give this show some oxygen and give us other peoples personalities.
Best of Luck for the season.
Here here!! Very well put. Although I’m afraid we’re too late for that suggestion to help -
i was disgusted by the racial sterotyping of yasmin by ben calling her a hooker, ghetto trash, saying she was uneducated and hoping she goes back to eating ketchup sandwiches and drinking kool aid. i have watched survivor for several seasons now and this is the first time i was literally angry by a contestant on the show.i know this is a show about reality, and the reality is there are racists people in this world but to see a black woman being attacked like that by a white man was disgusting and wrong and should have never been shown on t.v. to know that survivor has stooped to letting racists comments be shown on the air in this day and age of us having a black president and trying to have change in this world is disturbing. its one thing to get into arguments with people but to attack someone racially is wrong. i hope survivor cleans up its act and eliminates any loud mouth racist comments to be spurted out for the sake of ratings or survivor will lose me as a viewer and hopefully many more people in the future.
As a long-time fan who now has young children, I LOVE the opportunity to explain to my kids why racist comments and lies hurt others and cheap shots in athletic events are dangerous. The show is a great teaching opportunity–not to mention a fantastic nature show. The evil people just make the good ones stand out even more!
And btw jeff- loved the cameo in the opening titles.
This is one of the most memorable episodes of Survivor; I love it! I hate Russell but love the way he found the idol without a clue. What is the rest of the tribe doing?! Why aren’t they suspicious?! How is he able to control them!
Ben reminds me Tyson from the last season – a bit of an arrogant dickhead.
Favourite so far is Mick. In the shots where he was talking to the cameraman and the light was behind him, he looked a like an angelic, delicious, hunk of a man. I hope he develops a strategy and personality that is worthy of my current love for him.
Rule #1 – if you have a hidden immunity idol DO NOT TELL ANYONE!!
Rule #2 – if someone tells you they have the hidden immunity idol do not believe for one flippin’ second that they will ever give it to YOU! In fact, your next move should be to tell everyone else so they are out at next possible opportunity.
Love the season so far. It can still go any direction. Russel could change game play forever on Survivor.
I concur! I have always wondered why contestants want to reveal their idol secrets. Why can’t they keep it to themselves and spring it as a surprise at Tribal Council?!
Jeff, First ty for your take on things…funny and thoughtful.
Russell…the best TV ever! Finding the idol after hand picking two weeks in a row… who goes home…priceless!
Karma does have a way of dealing with attitude, case in point, Richard Hatch…said from episode one, season one he would win. A lot of people hated the fact he won, but, karma let him. Next thing you know, karma has him by the short hairs, in jail! Too funny.
As far as the Betsy love in here, I’m sorry but she blew it big time! I go along with the fact she had better insight into Russell and Ben but she played it like a small town (NH) cop. If she had played Big Town (NYC/Boston/LA) cop she would have used them both to her advantage to get farther in the game. Cozy up to them, especially Russell, and let them carry the target on their back. JMHO, mind you. After all the game is called SURVIVOR!
Have I said yet how much fun I find Russell? Unlike “C” from last season this guy has game and lots of it! Here is wishing it was next Thursday already, I can’t wait.
Is no one upset about Ben’s racist remarks regarding “ketchup sandwiches and Kool-Aid?” I totally understand that Yasmin approached the other tribe in a confrontational manner but that does not give Ben the license to make racist commentary about black people. It was disturbing and offensive to someone who has been a loyal fan of Survivor. What’s more, what message does it send to children who see this guy make such an outrageous comment? And what message does it send if he wins? That racism pays off?
Your shrieking hysteria over “racism” cheapens the incidents of real racism.
No, it is quite clear in this case that Ben is indeed a racist.
It was a racist comment as was “ghetto trash”.
paula’s obvously never experienced racism.
Doesn’t the attachment of Ben’s “poor & uneducated” attacks to her skin color make YOU racist? I don’t recall Ben combining them…
Are you stupid? What’s “real” racism, if that wasn’t? Obviously, you’ve never been the victim of racism, real or imagined. Sad to see Survivor go down the loathsome “Big Brother” route, allowing cretins like Ben to spout his ridiculous venim. Shame on you, Probst, and to hell with the producers.
I think Yasmin opened that door herself, she’s the one that told everyone she’s from the ‘hood’. If she was white I’m sure he would have said ‘trailer trash’ instead of ‘ghetto trash’ – really is that racist or a fact?
People are judged on thier behavior, and her behavior screamed ignorance, which is what Ben was alluding to. I didn’t hear a “racist” comment at all. But I was disappointed that the tribe allowed her to insult them, and then start an argument with Ben. They should have told her to shut up, or go down and sleep on the beach. If someone came to my house, and got mouthy, and insulting, they would have to take care that the door didn’t hit them in the ass.
Its become too fashionable and cliche to accuse people of racism…everytime a white guy insults a minority its “racism”. Hence what I mean by cheapening the word.
Yes Ramon, I commented about that earlier, you might have missed it, being AA myself, I thought the commit was a little racist, but then again thats why I love Survivor, all the different personalities and cultures, hey people will be people, and if thats how he felt so be it, thats what makes this game unique, and also this game makes you crazy and you don’t have time to think before you talk, and it makes this show that much more real, I mean those kind of comments and stereotypes exist, also it shines a light that some people are a little racist, thats just the world we live in, but I always say that those types of opinions are learned at home.
And Im sure youve never embraced a stereotype in your life….right? (eyes rolling)
1- Stop the racist stuff.
2- “ghetto trash” happens to come in all colors.
3- i’m white and grew up poor. I survived on mayo sandwiches and Kool-Aid. Don’t knock it.
Well sorry Joanne, IMHO his comments were a little racist. If he was black and called you “trailer trash” wouldn’t you think that was a little racist. I’m not making a big deal, I love all of the different people and personalities on the show that what makes it real, but as I said his comment and calling her “ghettos trash” quite a few times were racist, call a spade a spade.
Its a double standard. Ms KSwiss thinks its fine and dandy to call poor white people “trailer trash” but not the reverse.
You know Paula, I don’t know what your problem is, but I wasn’t calling her “trailer trash” I said it would be a little racist if someone of color called her that, And yes I am very use to stereotypes, all i said was that I thought the comments were a little racist, the key world being “I”, You left your comment and I left mine, well just agree it disagree, but we are both entitled to our opinions.
I was scrolling down just to see if anyone was going to make any comments about this. Yes Yasmin is dumb, ignorant and way too full of herself. I actually was irritated with her when she kept complaining about the woods. HOWEVER…all his comments were ridiculous. I give her props for confronting him on his tackling her. It is a game, but I would have been upset as well. Its already brutual with with women after eachother. I too was irritated with her poor grammer but to say that she is close to a hooker??? And if anyone thinks that his comments were NOT based on race they are kidding themselves and that is the reason that we still have problems with racism today. I would love to see the rest of the tribal because I was disgusted that no one said anything about his disrespectful comments.
100% agree, I forgot about the hooker reference, and sadly yes that was based on race. Yes Joanne color.
He mentioned her grammar first, which was abysmal. She screamed “uneducated” from her first sentence.
Once again Paula, what does “under educated” have to do with being a hooker, the comments were uncalled for.
Let’s be real, I’m a black woman and I’m not afraid to say that Yasmin acted like the textbook definition of ghetto starting with the constant complaining to “the monologue” and honestly, her grammar was severely lacking. Ben’s Kool-Aid comments were unfortunate, but honestly, a segment of society feels that way – thus the reason the stereotype exists. Not saying it’s right, but we can’t be offended with everything that happens just because it invokes race on some level. I am in no way defending the jerk, but I’m not all shocked and shaken or for that matter offended either. Stereotypes by their nature are ugly, gross exaggerations of the actions of portions of groups – and let’s keep in mind that they just finished arguing so of course he’ll say ugly things – he’s an ugly person. The same way that Ben is a self-admitted hillbilly and his actions most definitely show the worst traits of “po’ white trash”, Yasmin is admittedly from the hood and acts like it. But being from another race and calling it like you see it doesn’t automatically make you racist. It’s just like the guy who expressed surprise at Jaison being chosen for swimmer – admit it you were too, I was! But obviously, Jaison being a competitive swimmer blew that stereotype out of the water. Racism comes in when you use stereotypes and preconceived notions to mistreat people or deny access. We all (well most) strive to do better and judge people purely for who they are, but to believe that even enlightened people don’t think of stereotypes in given situations is unrealistic.
Beautifully said!
T-Thank you for making some great points.
All,
Pls read T’s post.
Exactly. Neither of those two is exactly the garden party type. Im surprised they were able to keep it as civil as they did.
I forgot to mention Mike, he will be known for one of the best Suvivor lines ever…not a quote, just the jist…Survivor the game is a dog, and we are all wearing Milk-Bone shorts!
While I’m at it, Yasmin best not reveal what she said to the other tribe, she was there to observe not be a critic of their game play.
As far as Ben’s comment, I believe he was pointing out she was under educated and poor. I never took it as a racial comment. IMHO
Even if that was the case, what did she do to display that she was under-educated and poor? And is he really in the position to make that judgement? Just saying…
He may not have known she was poor, but you know she’s uneducated just by the way she speaks. As he said 4 times, she has the worst grammar he’s ever encountered.
She said she was from “the hood”
ben is a jerk and he’ll get his eventually – a blindside hopefully!
Thought Yasmin was a hoot! Up here in Canada we like our ketchup sandwiches with beer.
mmmmmm beeeer. Haven’t had one in months …. now I want one …. case.
I have actually eaten a ketchup sandwich when I was very very poor
That joke was a lot funnier when Norm said it on “Cheers” about twenty years ago.
EXACTLY! I remember Norm uttering that line and I immediately told my husband, “That guy just ripped off Norm!”
Thank you! What a rip off, huh?
People like Ramon want to censor everyone until we are all to afraid to say Boo. Go away Ramon and write a letter to your congressman.
Yeah, cause Ben’s *obviously* highly educated and quite wealthy…
I completely agree with Ramon. There should be no place on CBS for blatantly racist remarks. This really should be addressed by the network now. I can’t just pretend I didn’t see that.
Dude, this is a reality show, and people do exist like that in reality. Get over it, it sucks, but it happens. It’s hardly worth censoring when you hear the same comments walking down the street.
Racist is NOT insulting a person who happens to be black. Racism is saying crap like “all blacks are……”
What is it Wesley, you totally ignored the rude, comments Yasmin made. Acutally, everyone commenting seems to have overlooked her horrible manners, and loud, rude mouth.
Ben wouldnt call Jaison ghetto trash because he isnt….hes middle class and educated and acts like it.
Paula your a jerk.
Still don’t get what Yasmin was thinking going over to Foa Foa and talking that way. Was she trying to create as many enemies as possible? Both Ben and Yasmin can’t leave too soon. Too many contestants being evacuated; make them get in shape or drop the challenges in which they get hurt. Unfortunate turn of phrase about Russell now owning Jaison cause of the idol.
Yeah but what if they switch up the tribes?
Loving the above idea about a special featuring full tribal councils – I believe you Jeff when you say so much more goes on there – well, we’d like to see it!
By the way…totally in love with you Jeff!
