On our Must List: Dan Brown's 'The Lost Symbol.' On yours...?

We don’t consider ourselves easily swayed by majority opinion here at EW, but when a book sells 2 million copies in its first week of release — as Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol just did — we figure it’s worth seeing what all the fuss is about. Despite a so-so review from our own Thom Geier, the latest Robert Langdon thriller is just as fun and engaging as its predecessor, The Da Vinci Code. No need to be ashamed picking this from the shelf! Plus, no one wants to be left out of the water cooler conversation and code-breaking, right?

What’s on YOUR Must List this week? List up to three items from current TV/movies/music/books/games/online. And be sure to explain WHY you’ve made your selection, too — we love to hear your thoughts! Don’t forget your e-mail address, in case we decide to use your submission in the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, Sept. 24 at noon ET.

imeem.com – The music streaming website allows users to instantly stream practically any song without the concern of viruses or spyware because the site doesn’t require downloads. Whether you want to hear Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” or watch video of the rendition from “Glee” it’s all there – and it’s all free!

    1. I. Love. Fringe. Wow. Just . . . WOW!

    2. Castle requires multiple viewings in our household. Nathan’s signature throwaway lines that cause Severe Beverage Alerts, the give and take of the Castle/Beckett partnership, the amazing father/daughter dynamic that reminds me so much of my own relationship with my dad. Can’t get enough.

    3. Leverage–what’s going to happen with Jeri Ryan’s new character and will Sophie ever return? And who will Elliot take great delight in thumping next?

TV- NCIS premiere! I’ve been stressing all summer about what happened to Ziva! I was happy to finally get a chance to relax after a summer or stress and reruns (thanks USA!)
Books- The Lost Symbol– I was waiting on this book since I finished Da Vinci Code…it’s not often I have a book I can’t stop reading (even as a bibliophile) and Dan Brown hasn’t disappointed. I find the symbolism just as intriguing in this book as the first two and find myself having to use much too much self control to not stay up all night…
TV (part 2)– Mentalist–as upset as I am at the time change, I am looking forward to Mentalist… Simon Baker is brilliant and handsome and the whole support casting has a wonderful chemistry. I look forward to seeing what kind of kinks will be thrown into this sophomore season…

Loving the CBS Monday lineup of “The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother.” It’s a total letdown Jim Parsons & Neil Patrick Harris (as well as their respective shows) didn’t get the Emmy nods they deserved…but both BBT and HIMYM keep getting better with age, when most comedies struggle to keep it fresh. Yay for smart writing and acting!

Dancing with the Stars. Tom Delay (the Hammer) simply must be allowed to move to the next round. It is exquisitely painful to watch this guy move. His partner Cheryl Burke must be in dancing hell….

“Bright Star”. A beautiful, poetic, romantic time at the movies that lets Keats’ poetry soar the way high school English class never could.

TV – Criminal Minds – Finally we’ll get to see what happens with Hotch and the Reaper.
Books – The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown – I enjoyed the book as well. It’s smart and a fun ride.
Music – the music from Glee. The cast is simply fantastic on every song they release.

  • Allyson

    1. Fringe – How is it possible for a show to get so much better over a period of three months?
    2. Taking Chances – Celine Dion song + Glee = Pure Rachel Berry Magic!
    3. The Office – Pam and Jim literally could not be any cuter. Can’t wait for the wedding!
