Megan Fox: Hot or Shot?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Megan Fox has a Shakespeare quotation tattooed on her body, so she’s clearly not just another pretty face. I wonder if she was channeling the Bard when she interpreted High School Musicalas “a group of boys who are all being molested by the basketball coach.” (Alas, poor Efron, I knew him well.)

After her first star-vehicle, Jennifer’s Body, underperformed at the box-office last weekend, The Los Angeles Times has dedicated 1,300 words to whether Fox’s outrageous sexuality and shotgun candor will ultimately undermine her career. There already seems to be a backlash developing against her, especially among women, so it will be interesting to see viewer reception this weekend when she hosts the season premiere of Saturday Night Live.

Fox understands her own appeal better than anyone: “I didn’t decide I’m going to be an actress cause I want to be respected for how I play chess,” she once told Entertainment Tonight. But she doesn’t seem to grasp — or care — that she’s painting herself into a corner. Though she worships (or at least owes much to) Angelina Jolie, she only seems to be incorporating the most shocking aspects of the Oscar-winner’s persona. Jolie isn’t around 10 years after Girl, Interrupted because she wore a vial of her husband’s blood around her neck. She’s around because she can act. Because she’s brave. Because she likes challenges, on- and off-screen.

Fox doesn’t need to be muzzled. Not at all. It’s part of who she is. But every frank quote comparing directors to Hitler or personal revelation about her sexual obsessions is a double-edged sword, and in the end, her boldness won’t have a fraction as much to do with her ultimate success as her talent and character. The more she showcases her wild side and the more she settles for roles defined by her curves, the more difficult it will become for her to become anything else. Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel got the message. I’m not sure Fox is listening.

What’s your impression of Fox’s longterm prospects? Can you imagine her ever accepting an Oscar? Will you be watching this Saturday night?

    I love her. Love her.

  • Jackie

None, no and no are my answers to your questions.

You took the words right out of my mouth! Although I love SNL, I will painfully be boycotting the season premiere.

Megan Fox is really good looking and hot and whatever but she can’t act! I’m sorry but even on Hope & Faith, I always found that she didn’ fit in.

She knows that most of the buzz around her is only due to her looks. Topping the Maxim Hot 100 doesn’t make you a gifted actress. And once everybody knows that beyond the hotness, there’s not a lot left, you’re marked, Jessica Biel is a perfect example. And being compared to a multi award winner like Angelina Jolie won’t help her.

My advice to Fox would be to depart from her hot looks and make-up, to play in some indie movies to increase her skills. It’s never too late to learn, Cameron Diaz took acting lessons after the success of “The Mask”.

In addition, I think she should dye her hair to stop the comparison with Jolie; Lady Gaga is a brunette but she dyed her hair because she was often mistaken with Amy Winehouse.

And until she’s nominated for a golden globe or an oscar, or she can open a movie, or she gets a role in a Woody Allen’s movie, she should keep her talk low-key.

I saw Jennifer’s Body this weekend, and frankly, she’s not that good of an actress (even though she is very pretty). I think she should keep her mouth shut about how much she hates Michael Bay and how she likes sex, and focus on becoming a better actress.

Personally, I think she’s fake. Most girls that pretty fake like they have self-esteem, but really are all hot messes underneath.

    • Kortney

YOU ARE SO JEALOUS!!!of Meagan Fox. Why do you speak so badly of her when Lindsey Lohan and Brittany Spears are so way much worse. Meagan is guilty of only being a lot better looking than most girls her age. She is just prettier. If you hate how you look go do somthing about it. and leave the poor girl alone.

      • yogi

I like that the person who keeps defending Meagan Fox doesn’t seem to have a grasp on the English language. But then again, its that type of person who probably thinks Fox’s Transformer roles are oscar worthy… Keep it up Kortney, you’re worth ever laugh.

      • Aprilcot26

Don’t comment on something you know nothing about. I speak just as poorly about Spears and Lohan. They are all equal in their trash factor. At least Lindsay Lohan had talent at one time.

  • PMD

i think she is over-rated – she is not pretty and she can not act. i am sorry i do not believe that just because someone has a good body should be that famous.

    • Kortney

      How green are you.?
      Another jealous twit you are.
fix your face before you crtizise another.

      • wino

loser alert! calm down single white female, nobody is jealous. until Fox finds a script showcasing her acting abilities, she will only be a Maxim sex symbol…and that doesnt have much longevity. I just feel her need to rebel is so contrived, it doesnt come off as original.

      • Will

        Wow Kortney. Wow.

I don’t understand your need to defend her. Yes she is pretty we’ll giver her that. But she is an actress, not a model, and thus open to criticism regarding her acting which is bland and terrible.

    • pinkbunny

Not pretty? Please. I have yet to see any movie with her in it, although I am curious about “Jennifer’s Body” because it is a Diablo Cody script and I LOVE her. So I can’t speak to her talent. But anyone of either gender, any age and eyes that WORK should at least acknowledge her looks.

      • Lindsay

Loved Juno and United States of Tara… Jenifers Body is a definate miss.
lines like: “you are so lime jello” and the awe inspiring “my tit” “no your heart”, aren’t even the worst of it.

though… in all honestly i think MEgan Fox did okay with what she was given.

  • Amy

If the girl was nearly as smart as she continues to claim she is… she’d learn when to shut her mouth and stop insulting the people that are either paying her, or paying to see her ‘work’. Eventually a new hottie will come around to keep the boys entertained, and then hopefully Megan will fade into non-existance.

    • Amy

      …non-existence.* ^

  • Snarf

I like the fact that she speaks her mind, but the line between being opinionated and coming across as ungratefull is a thin one.

  • Sarah

There are very few words to describe how little I care about anything Megan Fox does or says, and how sick of hearing about her I am. Sure, she’s attractive, but in my opinion that is ALL she has. She’ll sell tickets because people think she’s hot, but there are no Oscars in her future. Any comparison to Angelina Jolie (beyond the physical) is unwarranted and an insult to Angelina.

    • callia

      Amen.

    • Kayla

i really dont understand why people who dont like megan fox are wasting their time reading articles on her and then wasting even more time commenting and argueing with others over how they dont like her….whats up with that? obv she wont go away because PEOPLE LIKE YOU wont stop talking about her…which is fine with me because i love megan fox! you guys might call her pathetic..but you people are the ones that dont like her and are wasting your time….its hilarious!

  • Josh

I love that a Shakespeare tattoo apparently equals depth.

    • crispy

LOL If I didn’t have a sneaking suspicion the writer was being a lil’ sarcastic, I might think that was the dumbest quote written on EW.

    • Chris

No kidding. It couldn’t be that it’s pretentious, or a shallow attempt at appearing insightful.

There’s prolly an iPhone app dedicated to Shakespeare quotes.

      • pinkbunny

        Prolly? Really?

      • Lindsay

I thought the intro to the article was a joke??
shakespeare= depth, HA, who can’t quote some shakespeare?

    • Trina

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this. I can quote Shakespeare and I have never read one play. It’s like those people who get sayings in foreign languages and they don’t even speak that language. Uh-uh. No way, not for me. I don’t need “idiot” tattooed into my arm thinking it says “peace.”

  • mscisluv

I don’t think that either Scarlett Johansson or Jessica Biel (especially Biel!) are good examples of taking on “serious” roles and not relying on sex appeal, although Angelina Jolie definitely is. Regardless, the LA Times obviously doesn’t do its homework, because much of what Fox has claimed about her sexual history (particularly the lesbian love affair with a Russia stripper), she has admitted were fabrications to indulge the press.

    • James

Then that makes her even more contemptible for being such an attention whore, doesn’t it?

      • mscisluv

True – I just meant that perhaps journalists should do some more thorough research before sensationalizing things? Crazy thought, I know.

      • brianm2

If you were a reporter, how could you verify the Russian stripper story? It’s not like the Times heard the story somewhere else and didn’t ask Fox about it. She told them about it.

      • mscisluv

This article was published today. Fox was last week’s Rolling Stone cover girl (ugh, I know), and in the article she set some facts straight about her actual life story. Surely the Times could have bothered to look at other source material.

  • sadiebaby

Megan Fox is a one-dimensional actress. She can’t do anything but the sexy bombshell. Her looks fade in my eyes the more often she opens her mouth. The public is fickle and she’ll be done before she even gets started. That’s why you actually do need to have some talent.

  • Mandy

I’ll watch SNL because the idea of her hosting intrigues me. I don’t see her ever accepting an oscar and I think after the Transformers movies are all done, she will be too.

  • Scott

She’s a two-bit skank. I think that pretty much sums up how I feel about her.

    • Jeff

Alrighty, let’s calm down folks. It’s not like She, or any other actress, is trying to be friends with their audiences. In the end, she’s just a performer. None of us really know her, so how we’ll we ever know for sure if shes a “two-bit skank”? She’s a performer, and you don’t have to fall in love with her personality: try falling in love with her acting. Shes done, what, three movies? shes probably only doing big budget movies to make herself known, and maybe later she’ll flourish. Just wait a couple years and see what happens. None of us have to make opinions about her when we don’t even know her personally without magazines or misguided quotes.

      • Jack

        AMEN!

  • Curt

Megan Fox is today what Elizabeth Berkley was in 1995. And in fifteen years she’ll be who Elizabeth Berkley is today. Elizabeth who? you may ask. Exactly.

    • miv

whaaa? no comparison to Megan and Elizabeth. Elizabeth doing Showgirls was more to break out of her Saved by the Bell character and be seen as an adult. I’m not saying Elizabeth’s winning any Oscars, but she’s still around. I also don’t remember her saying shocking things in interviews for the sake of shock.

  • KC

She’s a porn actress who got lucky and got off the bus at the wrong seedy Hollywood bus station.

  • johnhech

the los angeles times interviewing bloggers for opinions, great idea, not

    • callia

Makes sense to me. Bloggers are essentially professional opinionaters.
