It’s people like Chris that give christains a bad name. He is sooooo full of himself!!!
I had to Google Chris Sligh. Because I couldn’t remember who he was. Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert I predict will have awesome careers. I think the same will happen for Allison…who can forget her? I’m a little worried about Kris Allen, who I’m thinking may go down in history as the Guy That Won Because Danny Gokey Fans Wouldn’t Vote for Adam Lambert. And herein lies the rub…despite the mudslinging between the fanbases–especially between the Glamberts and the Gokey Gang…these two will likely be remembered because of all this good/bad press. Hopefully, I’m proven wrong…because he is a good musician.
Kris Allen, that is…
Don’t forget the two Davids. They have been touring since the day they have been off AL. To sold out tours. David Archuleta has won awards and you should see the video of him singing in Spanish. He is amazing. Don’t under write him, he is on his way up. His voice is awesome.
In the modern world of music, there will be very few artists that are blockbuster stars. Ignoring American Idol, how many albums are published each year and how many of them go platinum or even gold for that matter. A drop in the bucket right? With portals such as youtube and myspace along with numerous indie recording companies, there will be numerous artists that are able to gain an audience and possibly create a living publishing albums for many years. These artists will have an audience and they may even be more happy with smaller venues and less notoriety since they can go to the grocery store and other places without being mauled by paparazzi and fans. Success is dependent on what makes you happy. And depending on the recording deal some nobody’s make more money on their albums than somebody’s. So everything is relative right? I love to listen to quite a few of these nobody’s
I failed to mention, but Chris Sligh is one of these nobody’s. I have never heard any of his music. I kind of doubt his blog had much of an audience either until EW gave it one.
Talk about a “Can’t see the forest for the trees” assessment. He better concentrate that energy on his own “want to be” career.
You forgot to mention Mandisa in your list of season 5 success stories. Her sophomore album made top five on the Christian music charts, and she was nominated for a Grammy for her first album.
He’s a toad, but the dude is telling the truth. Outside of the people who finish high, there are few if any who are making a living touring and living off of their music? There have been nearly a hundred in the top 10-12. How many are currently on tour, have songs on the charts? Get real people. So many of them have gone into doing stage plays because they can’t cut it as musicians, can’t get contracts.
Sorry to bust your bubble but there are people who didn’t even make the top 12 that are doing regular concerts. Sure…they aren’t filling the Rose Bowl, but they certainly aren’t in need of a day time job. I will agree that some of them made it to where they did on AI because of their story more than their ability, but of the ones that can really sing, some of them are making a living as a small blip on the radar. I suppose you would have to ask them to know if they are happy.
I understand the point Chris was trying to make, but the tone came across more as bragging about he was the smartest, most hard-working contestant. There is definitely an arrogant tone. By the way, he barely mentions Jason Castro, who came in 4th, but was signed by major label Atlantic, as is currently on a wildly successful radio tour. I would not put Chris in the top group of contestants from Seasons 6-7.
Also, a poster above was right. Chris’s season had mediocre contestants.
To be fair, he is partly right. American Idol is a huge risk to take. You have to be in it, to win it. Because once you can’t, you basically go back to a position far worse than before you entered Idol. It’s IDOL fact. Their contract is basically like making a deal with Satan or something.
Unless you really really really showed some marketability no matter how obnoxious and horrible you are (Daughtry), 19E related companies will sign you, but the rest will not get the opportunities compared to the ones that are getting picked up.
Allison is pretty lucky to be signed up this season. Usually, 3rd runner ups don’t make the cut.
I think maybe Chris is projecting his own experiences onto others?
And thank you for mentioning Anwar Robinson in paragraph 6, who was, and still is one of my favorites. Did you know he has 2 songs available on itunes now, and more are coming? I call that success!
I’m not exactly sure why it was necessary to have a point by point analysis of somebody’s blog entry. But since Kate Ward did it to Chris Sligh…
1. “’The majority of these Idols will do nothing in music.’ Hell, even season four’s forgettable Lindsey Cardinale recorded a track for a 2008 Christmas album (albeit an Idol-themed one). And last I checked, that’s music.” Let’s agree that Kate and Chris define “do nothing in music” in two ways. Chris clearly means “be famous” or at least “be able to live on the proceeds”. Kate, getting a singing credit on a Christmas album can only pay so many bills.
2. “As for Melinda, oh, Chris, honey, no you didn’t.” Oh, yes, he did. Likeable or no, Melinda Doolittle is not on the charts, let alone topping them.
3. “But again, how do we measure “success”?” Indeed. Carly Smithson has yet to top the success of…Carly Hennessy. David A. has one hit, and is opening for a teenager. And Jason Castro has yet to be truly heard from since the day he botched Bob Marley on TV. Come up with a measure better than internet hits on “faux hawk”, or concede this to Chris.
4. “Tell that to Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, etc. etc. etc. as they perform in sold-out stadiums.” He’s not talking to them. He’s clearly talking to everyone else. Kate’s logic, however, is the same Pollyanna thinking that keeps casinos filled.
PopWatchers, do you agree or disagree with Chris? Maybe not 100% with the method. But the message? Absolutely agree with Chris.
Wow. A voice of reason? I think not. I liked his single “Empty Me”… and I don’t watch American Idol… so I thought he was a respectable, stand-up Christian guy. But instead, you can’t deny that what he said here doesn’t make him sound like a total egotistic douche-bag.
