Huh. Surprised to see that so many people liked Little Dorrit. I was sick the week before Little Dorrit aired and I watch the entire David Copperfield miniseries, so I was excited for Little Dorrit. I gave it a chance and while I thought some aspects were amazing, it overall was kind of blah. I forgot to tape the last part, and instead of seeing when it re-aired I just said, “meh.”
I watched “Little Dorrit” when it aired, and loved it so much that I bought the book and the DVD. I was so sad when it was over, because the characters had become like family!
Congrats to PBS and Little Dorrit!I adored this production. It was such a breath of fresh air when I saw it in the Spring. I agree with others, the actor’s were superb and MacFadyen & Foy should have been nominated. In a sea of over-hyped drivel, this is a true classic. Bravo LD!
Little Dorrit deserved every award it received, and more.
I believe the leads Matthew Macfadyen and Claire Foy, as well as Tom Courtenay and Andy Sirkus in the support category should have won Emmy’s–they were that good!
Fortunately, with much deserved recognition of 7 Emmys, PBS may run an encore presentation and then all will be able to experience this quality piece, soon!
Perhaps PBS will run it as an encore presentation soon so all can catch it now that it is a sure winner!
After spending a year reading the novels of Dickens, I was thrilled to see such a wonderful production of Little Dorrit. Frankly, the miniseries was far, far better than the novel. Everyone and everything in that production is fabulous!
Loved, loved, loved Little Dorrit! Second only to Bleak House from a few years ago, I think. If you liked Dorrit, look for Bleak House – another BBC/PBS/Masterpiece Dickens story – if you can find it.
I, too, was transported that this wonderful piece of television was acknowledged. I became absolutely obsessed with this mini-series and have actually watched it twice! (Which is quite time-consuming.) The second time I appreciated even more Claire Foy’s performance–pure virtue is not an easy to portray. And besides the actors amentioned in previous posts, I came to appreciate the actor playing Edward Sparkler and Judy Parfitt as Mrs. Clenham, who managed a very subtle portrayal. I also thought the background music was vital and arresting to and should have won an award. I could go on and on.
Did any of you catch the book itself, or dare imagine reading Orwell’s brilliant analysis of Little Dorrit and Dickens’s other works! I hope Gordon Brown did, lots of Dickens’s criticism of British nationalism could be rightly applied to contemporary politics and culture. No, I do not suppose he is properly acquainted with either text, it takes so much more effort and time to get through all that writing!
I started watching “Little Dorrit” last fall on You Tube feeds from Great Britain until they cut them off…I could see by all the odd cuts to make shorter episodes why it didn’t do well there. Here in the U.S., on PBS this past spring, it was beautiful & gripping in comparison. So well done! I hope the BBC can minimize or eliminate the delays in getting these great shows to the U.S. screens. Thank you to Masterpiece Theatre.
I bought the BBC miniseries from Amazon.UK as soon as it became available. That is the uncut version (in PAL format.) My husband & I thoroughly enjoyed it. Like most Dicken’s it takes a while to get to the meat of the story as he introduces all of the characters. I find it doubly puzzling that it was nominated in many categories then won Best Miniseries without having any (save Tom Courtney) of the principal cast members nominated. (Plus it featured a stellar ensemble cast backing them up.) Without the cast it wouldn’t have even been a miniseries. From the posts, I’m not the only one who finds that odd.
I loved Little Dorrit and was thrilled that this excellent series was so well rewarded on Emmy night!!! The cast assembled for this production was amazing. Matthew Macfadyen as Arthur Clennam was superb….but then, Matthew is always superb. Claire Foy was a brilliant new find. My other favorites were Andy Serkis as Rigaud and Eddie Marsan as Pancks. Commanding performances all! Hopefully, quality television such as this will entice TPTB to air more character driven productions and once again embrace the mini-series!
I saw Little Dorrit When it aired and I was delighted that it won so many awards, I also own the DVD and I watch it all the time I love it.
As a lover of period/costume dramas I was over the moon to see Little Dorrit win so many Emmys, I agree that the actors should have at least got a nomination. In this day and age of TV programming being all about reality TV or shoot them up cop shows its wonderful to have the comfort of PBS’s masterpiece theatre. At least I can invest in watching something and know there will be an ending! Most of the shows I seem to like get cancelled very quickly! So “thank you to the good old BBC and PBS”.
