Kara DioGuardi: Should we give her a clean slate to start her second season of 'American Idol'? (Probably not, but...)

The sound of Kara DioGuardi’s speaking voice and the sound of my soul howling in agony created constant cacophony in my living room during American Read the full post.

I know change is a fact of life. I know older shows need to ‘shake things up’ to keep viewers interested. Michael, as you pointed out, we all hoped Kara would be an intelligent, thoughtful judge. Her background was incredible–but she’s not. All we got was another yammering ego-invested judge who took up valuable singing time. I’m afraid with Ellen, all we’ll get is another yammering ego-invested judge who tells jokes–and take up even more singing time!
I love that you want to give Kara another chance, but the bikini-off at the end of the last season killed any hope for me.
And after years of fast-forwarding through Randy and Paula, now I get to fast forward through 3 judges! If I bother to stick around at all. Yeesh! AI had a good run. Maybe I shouldn’t stick around to watch it turn into America’s Got Talent or Star Search–two shows I can’t watch.

      Jami,

Instead of getting your knickers in a bunch like Slezak, why don’t you just give the new season a chance? BTW, you were just as yammering in your post. I guess we’ll all turn on you now too?

I honestly think she’ll get better. There’s always gotta be a rocky start for a new judge. Especially being a new judge for the #1 show in America.

  • Marc

She needs to go. With Randy, the professional musician who doesn’t have any clue about music. Maybe they should find a reallly good vocal coach? So then we finally would have the funny one, the direct/jerk one and the professional one.

I just totally find Kara extremely annoying like nails scraped down a blackboard.

      Ditto!

I haven’t even decided if I am going to watch Idol, much less consider whether or not Kara will be any less annoying than she was in her first season as a judge. I see that they are still going with a four judge panel, so unless they all learn to be incredibly brief and to the point in their critiques, we most likely will have less of the singing and more of the talking. I won’t miss Paula. I think it was past time for her to depart. But I also wouldn’t have been too disappointed to see Kara go, too. She was positively embarrassing when she was making orgasm noises saying Yes, Yes, Yes, in response to one of Adam’s performances. I just don’t know that she can give concise, original, thoughtful assessments. I think Ellen could steal the show. She has a way of using her humor to make things interesting and different. At least we will have one person who is not in the music business. Maybe Ellen will say what many of us are thinking. She may be the one everybody is talking about in a good way.

I’d be good with having all the judges go except for Simon. At least with Simon you get an honest opinion devoid of the need to please. Randy doesn’t know what he’s talking about, Kara can’t ever shut up or apparently take constructive criticism and who knows what Ellen will bring to the table. Can we replace Randy and Kara and have professionals in the business who actually have to audition to be on the show? That way the producers will know for sure what they are getting. Randy is still there because he’s an original judge and Kara is there because she was Paula’s friend. Replace them with folks who are succinct, articulate, and knowledgeable about music.

Frankly, probably won’t even watch AI this year. I was really angry about adding the fourth judge and taking away singing time from the contestants. I don’t hate Kara, but she didn’t offer too much helpful and she talked way to much.I cringe to think about how bad it will be will Ellen (blah, blah, blah. She was terrible on SYTYCD and I just wanted to smack her and tell her to shut up. Less music and more yakking. Sure sounds like a winner to me!!

  • Jane

The only good thing she did all year was show up bikini girl. Usually I just waited for her to stop talking.

Kara has a lot of mistakes to make up for if she is going to earn her keep next season. Her yammering was always long-winded, never constructive, and at times made absolutely no sense. I personally don’t give a rat’s ass what anyone but Simon has to say, and I know I’m not alone. The week that they divided up the judging due to time constraints was awful, because not everyone got to hear from Simon. But, like you say, Michael, this show is and should be about the contestants, yet these judges try like hell to make it about themselves, which makes me resent them all the more.
As an aside: Kara’s yammering, Randy’s “for me for you”, and Paula’s WTF comments all contributed to the fact that my TiVo cut off Adam’s “Mad World” performance, and for that, I will never forgive them.

    Kara sucks.

Kara and all of the Idol judges need to be careful for the shameless promotions of their favorite artists, and they got slapped in the face by the american public. Writing No Boundries without Kris in mind was just too cocky. She is really treding on thin ice with most of us, and needs to show a little respect to the voting public. Ellen will be better than her,and she isn’t even a musician.

  • David

I like Kara and I really like the song she co-wrote by Theory Of A Deadman: Not Meant To Be, she also looked great in the video. Too many people are haters in this day and age, LIGHTEN UP AND GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE.

  • Peggy

I think Kara will improve. She is definitely more coherent than Randy Jackson. Randy has been sore point for me since the beginning. At least Paula at times made very pertinent comments, whereas Randy never has.

    • to Peggy

Like “you look beautiful”". Or I want to squesh your head and dangle you from my rearview mirror”. Or this really pertinent comment to a contestant, “You are an icon”!!!

  • john t.

i’m still team kara. she’s more coherent than randy and paula combined.

  • Glass Houses

Here’s the thing. I was looking forward to having someone on the panel who had talent (we were told) and worked with a lot of different singers. But all we got was blithering. And her songwriting (this year) was insulting. In addition, she was in bed with an earlier contestant plant who then got disqualified (remember). I think that this season they should have Kara go first, so she can’t just parrot Randy (which is absurd). And limit the judges speaking time. Also, last near proved that 4 judges it too much. Dump Randy. Who is useless dawg. Ouch, now I am blathering.

  • Bill

She was a horrible judge last season, and I don’t think she’s that great a songwriter. I just looked up her credits, and it’s mostly crap. Babyface she ain’t.
