'America's Got Talent' recap: And your winner is...

Really?!? Less than four months after Susan Boyle — who performed tonight — was robbed of her rightful victory on Britain’s Got Talent, so did the same story unfold for opera singer (and front-runner) Barbara Padilla across the pond. Making it to the Top Ten, her chances of winning looked good; in a Top Five that excluded Hairo Torres and Lawrence Beamen, her chances looked great. Then the final roll call: “Kevin Skinner and Barbara Padilla, please step forward.” Silence. Tension. They stand still, anxiously awaiting the final result. Kevin, overcome with the weight of the moment, keeps his eyes on the ground; Barbara tries hard to settle on an emotion. Another long pause. Nick opens the envelope…”KEVIN SKINNER!” Eyebrows arch dangerously and Twitter seizes up as a nation attempts to understand what just happened.

So how do you feel? Going into the night, even money (the prize is a Vegas show; gambling is only appropriate) was on either Barbara Padilla or rock group Recycled Percussion to win it all. In both their favors were a string of powerful, confident performances that earned them consistent praise from the judges. “You are a true Vegas act,” Piers told Percussion on more than one occasion,  and Padilla — well, she’s been their top pick for some time now. I imagine they’re kicking themselves right now for giving Kevin Skinner so much ammunition along the way.

It’s not that Skinner’s a bad singer, or even undeserving of a place in the Top Five (Top Two…we’re sort of pushing it.) He’s clearly a talented guy with a unique ability to connect with an audience. What he isn’t, though, is a Vegas performer. Or even a consistent performer. Did you hear him sing on Monday, or tonight with Thelma Houston? That Skinner received more votes than any other contestant speaks more to his audition round performance than any he’s given since. He was, in that brief moment in time, a revelation — the American Susan Boyle we were all desperate to claim for our own. Over the next few rounds he’d be supplanted by the likes of Padilla, Lawrence Beamen, and Recycled Percussion…but voters clearly held on to the image of the charming chicken-catcher, innocent and sweet. It seems clear that in America we like our stars — and even pseudo-stars — “just like us.”

But forget those final results — everything we’ve talked about so far came with only five minutes left in the program! For nearly two hours before that we were treated to a buffet of special guest performances, the return of audition round rejects, and one last trip to the famous Orville Redenbacher lounge. For a show ostensibly about grooming future stars, tonight seemed much more keen to focus on the past. As any movie with flashbacks can tell you, this almost always takes two hours.

The night got off to an oddly captivating start when Thelma Houston took the stage with all 10 finalists to sing “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” Okay, so Grandma Lee didn’t really sing (she introduced the number and danced a little bit) but everyone else was nicely enmeshed in the performance. Drew Stevyns and Lawrence Beamen even looked like they were holding their own with Thelma — no small feat considering the time they probably had to put the routine together.

Leona Lewis performed “Happy,” the first single from her upcoming album, and chatted with Nick a bit about her own reality competition road to fame. It would be wishful thinking to consider America’s Got Talent on a par with American Idol (or even X-Factor, Lewis’ alma mater) for career-making opportunities, but the fact is that all of these shows can and do produce real talent.

Of course they also produce crap, as evidenced by the “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” medley sung by audition round rejects. All your favorites were back!: the screaming singer, the suitcase girls, the weird red-headed man. It was cool to see them be able to poke fun at themselves (I think), but you have to wonder if this interlude (and others) could have been excised to save time. We didn’t even get any real contestant moments until 9 p.m.!

Cirque Du Soleil performed, but without any 10-year-old acrobats or tight-rope walkers. Shakira dry-humped the stage in her “She Wolf” performance. (Nice!) Somewhere between those two acts, five of the 10 finalists — Hairo Torres, Lawrence Beamen, Drew Stevyns, Grandma Lee, and Fab Five — were given their walking papers. A real shame for both Beamen or Stevyns, who at this point had long ago surpassed Kevin Skinner in vocal quality, and a downright egregious error with Torres. He should have been in the Top Five at least.

Not too much later, the fifth, fourth, and third place contestants  — Voices of Glory, Texas Tenors, and Recycled Percussion respectively — were also cast off, asked to ponder their fate in a less prominent part of the stage. Time for professional assistance! Rascal Flatts performed, basically wearing “Team Skinner” t-shirts. Likewise Susan Boyle (who sang a much slower version of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses”) might have worn a fashionable “Team Padilla” brooch in support of her own operatic kin. Sides chosen. Lines drawn in the sand. Our Top Two alone and nervous…and our recap finally come full circle.

That’s it! I’d like to thank all of you who have joined me in watching and reading this summer — your comments on the show itself and my “reporting” of it have made the experience that much better. I really could not have done it without you. Some of us may never be friends (hi, Dexter!), but I hope that after this endless summer together we’ve at least become chums. We’re chums, right? Right. As always, fill the comments section with your thoughts on any subject even tangentially related to America’s Got Talent! Our show, now and forever.

I love how all the judges were saying to all the finalists that their road was just beginning- they are on their way to stardom… Give me a break, where the hell are last season’s top 5? This show produces nothing more than 15 minutes of fame for these contestants. That’s it…

    • Katie

      LOL LOL!!

      Soooo true!
      “You’re a STAR”
“This is ONNNNNNNNNLY the start for YOU”

      Give me a break!
I already forgot half of their names!
      (except Fab 5….poor girls! wahhh!)

    • Kelly

The winner sucks, are you serious he is the worst singer ever. I dont care about his story it looks as tough America’s got no talent! Really I sing better than him. He is Terrible! I can not believe he won, all of the other singers were better than him, all of them!

      • sandee

I agree, Texas Tenors, Beaman, Padilla, percussion were outstanding, and Skinner will not bring the draw at Vegas. I think the final winners need to be chosen by the big 3, Hoff, Sharon and Morgan.

      • Penny Hobson

We have watched for the last time, America’s Got Talent and American Idol!! That’s twice now, we as viewers, have been duped by rigged voting. I certainly don’t think the judges should constantly bump up the participants with praise because it definitely influence some people. I have a good ear for music and from the beginning did not hear what the judges say they heard in Kevin’s voice. He may do well as country singer such as Chris Cristopherson, and Willy Nelson and I do wish him Luck!
The show was full of good talent, even the young ones did well but I think there should be and age limit.
We will buy the music of Barbara, Padilla who has crystal clear voice!!! The Texas Tenors are a breath of fresh air today in music and we looked forward to hear them each week. We surly enjoyed watching Recycle Percussion the guys are just plain, talented musicians and fun.

      • Peggy

Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson — obviously you aren’t a country fan — had and still have big careers. So if Kevin Skinner does as well as those two, he will indeed have a great career. Not th at I think he will. But look at someone like Bucky Covington, who was on American Idol, but finished 7th or so, who isn’t doing too badly as a country singer. Maybe Kevin could do as well. Oh, my favorite by far was Lawrence Beamon.

      • Judy

I totally agree with this comment. The man has a heart but he cannot sing at all. I think it was rigged.

      • Patty

        Kelly,
You sing better than Kevin! Wow, when you’re on America’s Got Talent next season I might vote for you! Naw, I don’t vote for ignorant people.

      • TC

For those who don’t think Kevin should’ve won, well, he did. So, either you are in the minority (which I think you are) or you didn’t vote (and then it’s your own fault). Either way, your just p—ing into the wind!

    • Sonnie

When I called to vote for Barbara Padilla, I got the answering machine of an unknown company. Not to take anything away from Kevin, but I think the results might be off. Anyone else find the same thing?

      • riorio

i had the same problem one time, i was voting for talent #10 and the recorded mans voice kept saying “thanks for voting for talent #1. i e mailed the show about that and they never answered me. fixed voting??????

      • Linda Griffith

I didn’t call in. I used the internet. You could vote ten times for your favorite act and of course I voted for Keven

      • Patty

Sonnie, I kept getting “dead air,” no busy signal, when I called to vote for Kevin. I just assumed it was a glitch. I did manage to get all of my votes in. Obviously you dialed the company number or you wouldn’t have reached that company. And, riorio, when I got through to vote for Kevin, the recorded voice said “thanks for voting for talent 9″ and didn’t say # at all. Guy on recording talks so fast it’s hard to catch what he’s saying. Heard perfectly on speaker phone, though. Dancing With the Stars says “thanks for voting for Mario” (or whoever you’re voting for and when your number of votes are up, they tell you. Have to keep count on AGT.
Anyway, Sonnie, dial carefully or you can transpose numbers easily.

LoL! That $1mill will be spent in 6 months.

      • chistosa

While I agree that Kevin Skinner was a surprise winner based upon his mediocre performance on Monday, there is no reason to be so mean spirited and offensive. You know nothing of the man’s value system or what he will do with the money. Perhaps you should stick with your review of his win and your opinion of his talent. You are not qualified to make a judgement about his character.

      • Big Dave

One thing I can guarantee you, and that’s that the $1 million won’t be spent in 6 months. Have you read the small print at the end of the show? (You have to record it and pause it in order to read it.) The $1 million is paid out OVER FORTY YEARS. That’s right; this $1 million prize they keep talking about is really $25000 a year for the next 40 years.

      • Ciaran

Hardly in months when it’s paid out over 40 years! Not really as much as people thought? And imagine if Grandma Lee had won? I think the care home jokes would have been prophetic.

      • fred foster

he can’t spend it in 6 mo. The million is given over a 40 yr period, like a lottery. Also, like a lottery, the winner can accpet a lump sum, which is considerably less.

      • Cam

Actually, if you read the fine print at the bottom of the screen during the credits, the million dollars is given out over many years, not all in one lump sum.

      • Patty

        America’s Got Talent
The show ‘America’s Got Talent’ has a top prize of a million dollars, so if you win it then you get a million bucks and never have to worry about money again, right? Well, not exactly. The prize is a million dollar annuity, paid out over the course of forty years, or the winner has the option to get the current cash value of that annuity immediately. It isn’t clear how that cash value is calculated – it depends on the assumed creditworthiness of the annuity issuer, and few financial instruments go out that far, but it’s definitely less than half a million dollars. After paying income taxes on that, you’ll be left with an amount which makes for a perfectly reasonable down payment on an entry-level condo in San Francisco. My advice to anyone of not much means who hits a payday like that is to shove the money into a retirement account, then live your life exactly as you would otherwise only without having to worry about having the money to retire when you get too old to work. (This applies to winning the lottery as well, which uses the same sort of accounting for the announced prize values.)

    • Preston

Maybe some of last year’s top 5 finalists are recording their first albums to be released in 2010 or performing in small venues. Or just walked away from it and returned to private, normal, ordinary lives again. Because they didn’t win America’s Got Talent, they won’t do entertainment again.

    • Linda

I would like to add a comment about another fact that now makes this show unbearable for me to watch. One of the contestants who auditioned way back was a lady with a deformity to her lip. She said that no one ever gave her a chance because people did not like looking at her. Then, like Susan Boyle, she opened her mouth to sing and out came a beautiful voice. The audience was shocked and everyone, INCLUDING THE JUDGES, gave her a standing ovation. The ridiculous HOFF told her that no one would ignore her anymore and that now she will be a star. The judges all told her that her journey was now beginning and that stardom is is her future. She cried and I cried. Did YOU, America, ever have a chance to vote for her? NO! Because she was one of the people who never left the hanger in Las Vegas and was told to go home. The camera rolled in on her and caught her saying, “I knew it” as she was fighting back her tears.Does anyone else remember this? The judges were heartless and pathetic. Why give someone a standing ovation if you never intended to give her a break??? I wrote to NBC about this travisty and grave insincerity afterwards and they never answered me. Shame on them and shame on the hypocritical judges who gave a lady hope and then yanked it out from under her. Where would their careers be if anyone of them had a deformity, a limp, a hump on their backs?
After last nights win and the lack of compassion NBC and the jugdes showed, I will never watch the show again. I am sure this means nothing to the show, and I mean no disrespect to Mr. Skinner but the whole thing is a sham and I have better things to do with my time…like file my nails or stare at a blank wall.

    • Sally in Chicago

      So true?
Why all male winners for AGT?

      • chistosa

        Because more women vote

      • jake

the winner of season one was an 11 year old girl named bianca ryan.

    • Jean

If this poor man bombs in Vegas – that will be that.

I’m not sure there’s much of an audience there for opera – so maybe Ms. Padilla caught a break by NOT getting the gig – but I do think it’s unfortunate the finalists get apparently NO ca$h prize whatsoever.

    • Iva

I agree that Kevin didn’t deserve to win. He was consistently pitchy. I would have been happy with any of the final 5, EXCEPT Kevin.I truly am a Country Western Music fan, but he STUNK! When it was down to the final 2, however, I thought he would probably win, because there are more c&w music fans than opera fans. And you know what?—-She belongs in an opera hall, not in Vegas! As one of the judges said,”She will play bigger halls then Vegas!”

  • jean

Unbelievable that Kevin Skinner won. He was not even close to singers like Barbara, Drew, and Lawrence. Also the three tenors were better than him as well. I think it was a sympathy vote based on where he came from and his situation at this time

    • Joyce

Another example of the “dumbing down” of America.

      • Nate

        I completely agree.

      • Ray

I completely agree! I missed the show last and just checked to find out who won. Recycled Percussion or my favorite Barbara Padilla? Kevin Skinner I fast forward his perforance everytime I heard him sing a bum note….which was everytime! Barbara!!!! We love ya girl! Who doesn’t vote for a beautiful, talented, cancer surviving, mother, who also killed it every time on stage?? America = dumb!

      • terg

ray, check out her performances out on youtube … you’ll need to sort through them to find the one you missed … it was stunning … fabulous magnificent etc …
no way of knowing if the vote was rigged or not … i hope they didn’t hire the software sneaks who’ve been rigging elections for so long …

      • AnnR

        Yep. Dumbing down.

      • KCKool

I am a trained vocalist and I agree with everyone on this page, with the exception of Sandi, who seriously needs to invest in hearing aids. Americans should not be allowed to vote anymore. This is so ludicrous that I can’t event watch the show anymore. I can’t believe I even auditioned for this show. Next time I’ll bring my chickens!

      • Patty

The dumbing of America occurred in November.

      • Christian

Patty – you are really stupid

    • Chris T

I agree Kevin only won on a sympathy vote if he really did win what PR for the show that a Poor Chicken catcher won I think the whole thing was fixed The way the judges stood up for his performances wether he was good or bad and most times he was bad but they stood up and aplauded his performances I tell you it was just a Public Relations scam He was supposed to win no matter what, and those crocidile tears drove me crazy. I dont think I will waste time watching that show again.

      • Jake

I think the producers might have tilted the results. it probably would have looked bad to have 2 opera singers win in a row. I do thin Padilla definantly deserved to win. What a voice!.
P.S. am i the only one that is upset the EriAm sisters didn’t even make it to the finals?

    • Rock Golf

Kevin should have won ONLY if the title of the show was “America’s Got Pity”.

      • Daryl L

What about the PITY-SOB story of Babs?

      • XLMSRICK

He wouldn’t make the first cut on American Idol. He’d be one they’d laugh at and say sorry

      • Patty

No, that would have been to “I’m a cancer survivor” Padilla

      • Geneva

I am sorry that you have no knowledge of country music. Since you are not a fan, thank goodness Kevin did not need your vote to win…

    • sandee

I agree, or is America just stupid?

      • lgrif5th

I think a lot of you are being rude, crude and judgemental. Give the guy a chance. Bob Dylan isn’t the best singer in the world but he is an icon. Keven may just surprise you.

      • Kathy

I don’t think we should be trashing poor Kevin. The show needs to have a different decision making system for the winner. The winner is going to appear in LAS VEGAS. Recycled Percussion makes me think of a Vegas show more than the rest. They each have their own genre they perform in and then when they get to be a Celine, Whitney, etc. then they can take their act to Vegas.

    • Preston

I think they wanted to choose someone unlike last year when also rans competed. Kevin Skinner’s performance wasn’t as strong as the others, but maybe the simple rawness of his approach made more voters lean more towards him to win it all. And all of the others should keep at it and keep performing, whether it’s music, dancing, comedy and other forms of entertainment. Can’t wait to hear Lawrence Beamon, Drew Stevyns and Voices of Glory’s first albums! And Barbara Padilla–very inspiring with her back story and I hope that she gets to perform in many opera houses around the nation and the world! Loved her voice! I think his being unemployed might have struck a chord with the nation’s economic crisis–people could relate to what he was going through or know someone else who is unemployed. Now, he gets to perform in Las Vegas and have more opportunities in music. It’s inspiring to many of us to not let bad things happen to us and look up and forward.

    • XLMSRICK

      AMEN

    • hangups

After Kevin’s first performance, I voted for him. His interpretation of Garth Brooks’ song was breathtaking. In progressive weeks, his singing did not seem on target, and I saw Lawrence as the breakout male singer (though his Old Man River was AMAZING!!!) And yet, week after week, the despicable “HOFF” would tease Kevin, mocking his accent, where he came from, and the job he quit to chase this dream! Now, let the poor guy keep his money and go home! To heck with trying to pack houses in Vegas. (That was something added on LAST year, only after Terry Fader made such a big impression there!) It’s rather like “Killing a Mockingbird” to put him in that environment. He’ll be eaten alive!

    • Patty

Believe it; he did and I jumped for joy.

  • Ed

I was also upset with Kevin winning. I don’t understand it. I also didn’t understand Shakira’s performance. The lip syncing and humping the stage was just horrible. I thought I was in a strip club, not watching NBC at 8:30 at night.

  • Susan Epps

Totally beyond me how someone who CAN’T sing wins AGT. The Voices of Glory should have won if the competition wa based on best final performance and Grandma Lee also gave her best performance in the finals. What a shame talent didn’t win. Barbara Padilia was the most talented and the most consistent.

    • Clover

yes, BPad was consistent in her song choice, singing the same one twice

    • allie

My theory is that not that many people are actually voting. I know I didn’t – ever. I only know a few others that watch it and they didn’t vote either. No one this season actually moved me enough to make me pick up the phone. So maybe all the chicken farmers in America banded together and became a serious voting block. But seriously, VOG & Grandma Lee are NOT talented. Not worse than Kevin but still really, really bad.

      • Joey

I agree. I didn’t vote for anyone this year. In past years I’ve always had a couple of favorites. After this fiasco I doubt I watch again. Why didn’t they narrow the field more before the final vote?

    • harry

I totally agree BP was so very much greater than Kevin! She should have won no doubt about it. All I know is that I am thru watching this show. I am not wasting my time watching a show unfold that has already been decided, I say this because if KS REAALLY was the winner than America don’t know talent!!!!

      • Patty

        You’ll be missed next season!
Do you know how many Americans voted for Kevin? Do you know where the opera star that won last year is today? Kevin DID win and he has his $25,000 per year annuity to prove it.

  • Amber

I wish Recycled Percussion would have won the whole thing. They bring something different to the table. They are coming to York, PA on Oct 9th, i cant wait to see them!

    http://www.pullocenter.psu.edu

    • Joey

York, PA – haven’t lived there for 20 yrs but I still miss the place. There is no prettier place than York Co. in the spring.

  • Some Guy

The thing to remember is that winning a TV talent show doesn’t mean much (that $1 million prize is going to be doled out over 40 years, remember). Kevin Skinner could have a few country hits, but I think Barbara Padilla is going to have a real career. The Texas Tenors and Fab Five always struck me as more Branson than Vegas.

    • Nate

Bingo on the Texas Tenors and Fab Five. The Texas Tenors have ok talent and a catchy name, but really, only the blonde guy is a tenor. The other two are baritones.

    • Lynn

I agree with Nate – I would love to see the Texas Tenors and Fab Five in Branson. Hope somebody is listening! Probably will never watch AGT again – disgusting results.

    • JJ

I think that Kevin Skinner will probably have a bigger career than Barbara Padilla. Good Opera or classical singers are not mainstream. Not to mention Barbara can’t hold a candle to 90% of them. Country music is all about emotion, less about vocal ability.

      • sandee

Exuse me! Have you ever heard of the Metropolitan Opera in NY? Again, dumb America.

      • KM

Was the title of the show “America’s Got Mainstream Talent”?

These shows will thin even worse after results like these. After seeing talent like Ms Padilla get robbed, how many more truly talented people will choose to put themselves through this just to see someone w/ a more emotional backstory steal the prize?

Show should be renamed to “America’s Got Schlock”

      • lmac

Are you crazy? Some of the very best voices singing today are in country music, Martina McBride,Tricia Yearwood,Trace adkins,Rascal Flatts. The only way you get into country music now without a great voice is if you write great songs(Willie Nelson) Or you are a total package(Taylor Swift). Kevin Skinner can’t carry a tune in a bucket, has no personality and will be back to chicken catching before you know it. Shame on Piers for getting him the win. Truly a joke.

      • for Sandee

what does the Met in NY have to do with JJ’s comment? yes, there’s the Met and classical singing is still not mainstream – what’s your point?

      • MARIE

My reply to Sandee – calling American dumb, well dumb means lacking the power or faculty of speach and America certainly has the power of speach and they voted Kevin the winner.

      • Andrea

Rascal Flatts – best singing voice? They’re awful. That guy’s voice grates on my last nerve.

      • BB

The power of SPEECH! Holy crap, Kevin Skinner and now someone that cant spell SPEECH. Have you ever seen the movie Idiocracy?? I’m scared speachless. LOL

      • Joey

Taylor Swift a total pkg – give me a break. I can’t wait for her 15 minutes to be over! She is a product of great marketing and that’s all.

      • DG

what does emotion have to do with talent. the outcome of the show was as discussing as Hof.

  • Sandi

I think Kevin Skinner is very deserving of Americas Got Talent winner. I think he will do great in Las Vegas. He was my favorite from the first time I heard him sing. all the contestants have amazing talent. But Kevin came out on top and deserves it just as much as anyone else and yes he is an amazing singer. My husband and I are going to save our money so we can go see him in Vegas, that’s how strong we feel about him winning America’s got talent.

    • Nate

Just shows your lack of knowledge on who is really talented. His first song was good, the rest sucked, compared to the other singers. Out of tune, flat often, poor phrasing, etc. You have no clue and it shows.

      • Katie

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions….but seriously, Kevin is freakin’ AWFUL. I mean, there is NO way I could stay awake for 90 minutes watching him sing….gag!

    • Wendy

You better save up fast. The only Vegas show they’re guaranteed is the one night at Plante Hollywood in October. After that, it is only if some venue decides to pick them up. Terry Fator is the only performer from AGT that has succeeded in nabbing a long-term Vegas show, and I seriously doubt anyone will come calling for Skinner.

    • sandee

wow! Some people are just tone deaf.

    • Rosemary

Thank you Sandi! People are so crule. I loved Kevin from the start, and he did deserve to win. He’s got the true raw talent the show is all about. He definitely has a big career ahead of him, and he’ll just keep getting and better. His shyness will go away, and he’ll surprise all those nasty people who have put him down. Go Kevin!!!

      • AM

        You people are deaf….

      • lmac

No one is trying to be nasty to Kevin. This is not personal. The fact is the guy cannot sing. He is probly a really nice guy who is good a catching chickens but he still cannot sing. All the other singers in the finals were much better. It is really not fair to them. The show is not ‘Americas favorite contestant’ It is Americas got talent. Sorry but singing is not Kevins.

      • fred

rosemary….are you a chicken farmer, too ? That was crule. Seriously, he needs some big star to put him under their wing. He needs serious grooming. Needs to be taught stage presence. The ‘chicken story’ will get him only so far.

      • patty

i agree i voted for him too i love him and wish him the best of luck country music is the best and love rascal flatts too

      • Its called Americas got TALENT

People who listen to country music are more likely to commit suicide, statistically speaking of course.

    • Reggie

Kevin is clearly the kind of guy you want something nice to happen to but it should not have been at the expense of people far more talented. This is one I will never understand. KS really has no talent. He is the worst singer I have ever heard on a national stage or anywhere for that matter. You better save fast because I have my doubts he will be in Vegas long assuming they don’t find a way to cancel the whole thing. I am not an opera fan but it was very obvious that Barbara Padilla was absolutely teriffic. Lawrence Beaman was great and I believe will have a successful carrer (watch for a CD soon.) Recycled Percussion could’ve also been an easy winner. I couldn’t have come up with a negative word had any of these three won. I have no idea why the rest were even there except for maybe the Fab 5.

I can’t believe I wasted my time waiting for this result. I have watched all 4 seasons, and I can tell you Kevin Skinner will be a footnote by next season of this show. The scariest thing of all is AMERICA picked this guy. He was nice, sincere and whatever, but did anyone who voted for him listen to him sing? He was out of tune on every performance except the audition. Even the judges Monday night commented that you don’t have to be a great singer to have IT. Horrible choice except as and sympathy vote, but even that should have gone to Barbara Padilla.

    • Patty

They picked the big opera singer last year too. He checked himself into a “hospital” in St. Louis this week.

  • Monar

I will say it again. It is a shame that a bunch of country people got together and decided to upset the outcome by basically “stuffing” the votes…there should only be allowed one vote per viewer and then he never would have won…this doesn’t reflect the people’s choice…just how some people without anything else to do can flood the voting for who they want to win.

  • Dot

Should be renamed America’s Gone Tone Deaf. That is not a man you pay to see.

Just shows the lack of sophistication people have on music-the woman was phenomenal!

    • Christi

      Amen, sister!

    • Jason

Kevin Skinner was a great choice. His last song choice was not a good one I’ll admit. He didn’t pull that off very well. I would have been happy if Barbara Padilla had one as well. It was a toss up for me. They both have their own appeal. If the majority of votes were for Kevin Skinner then majority rules. Deal with it. Skinner managed to connect with his audience just a little bit more whether you like it or not. He’ll do fine in Vegas too. He doesn’t need the “I’m so sophisticated” crowd to fill his audience. He doesn’t have the greatest vocal range, I agree with that. But hey, Nicolas Cage is a bad actor and he still manages to get gigs, so somebody must think he’s good.

      • Stormn

        Jason,
I agree with your comment on Nick Cage but that is it.
I was shocked when Skinner was chosen for the top 5 over Drew Steven (sp?) and truly thought that only two of the acts chosen were deserving of the top 5 (Recy Pro and Barb. Pad.) None of the others were worthy. When they went down to the top 3 I was certain that the man (Skinner) that had the worst finale performance of any finalist in any talent show ever shown on TV would certainly get the boot.
Then he is announced as the winner! There is no way that outcome was anything but rigged. Comparing his singing ability to Barbara’s is like comparing a 1980’s Mustang to a Lamborghini. While the Mustang is an American icon, the 80 weren’t the best version and ANY Lamborghini just out classes it by miles.
I’m a Mustang fan, but come on, you don’t chose a Mustang over a Lambo if you have the choice. The gap in KS and BP talent dwarfs the Grand Canyon!

I think the judges should be ashamed for passing Kevin Skinner through the first audition. He doesn’t compare the ANY of the other singing acts. He might be a nice guy- but can you imagine how it would feel to lose to him? I will nolt watch that show again!

    • jeff

You are nailing it on the head. The judges let a number of acts through that should have never been there and now this is what happens.

  • avonjax

Sandi, when on the show was he an “amazing singer?” I never heard 1 amazing performance…..

  • avonjax

….and before anyone says, “you must hate country music,” I do like country. But I’m not tone deaf…..

  • Larry W. Virden

I too was shocked at the finale. However, in a way, I wasn’t. With the voting based purely on viewer participation, and each viewer able to cast up to 30 votes, it seems highly unlikely to me that enough opera fans were going to spend the time voting for Barbara to make it possible for her to win.
On the other hand, it would not have surprised me if a couple of the others in the top 10 would have won, based purely on that criteria. The huggable kids, the 3 cowboys, or the fantastic percussion band all appeared to be fan favorites and likely to end up winning.
I did, however, say to my wife through the past few weeks that it seemed like the show and judges were grooming Skinner to win. While I think he sounds a lot like some of the old time country western singers, I didn’t find him appealing enough to vote for him myself.
America got what it wanted yet again, after another voting process, and it remains to be seen what America will do in response.

Meanwhile, I hope that promoters are lining up to sign up a few of the top acts in this year’s competition.

Well said, Larry. Kevin is a bit of a throwback to when country music was more about heartbreak and singers didn’t necessarily sing that well. My worry about Kevin is that he imitates other singers. People like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard created their own sound. Likeable as he is, I almost think Kevin is tone deaf. He can imitate a song he knows but generally doesn’t know where his voice is going. Nice guy, though, and a great ability to connect with an audience if he can calm his nerves down and find the right songs. I think the good acts that didn’t win will still be able to make reasonable livings as entertainers thanks to the publicity.

Larry…I think you’ve hit it. Does anyone think Opera fans are going to watch a klutzy show like AGT? Country fans like myself are going to wactch it (while drinking beer and talking about Nascar during commercials). I agree with someone earlier. When it gets down to the top 10, the results should should be decided by professionals in the entertainment industry. And I don’t mean the ogre, Sharon and the hoff (gag).
