'True Blood' opening credits can't top 'United States of Tara'

Tagged:

Tina Fey, Justin Timberlake, and Joss Whedon weren’t the only winners at this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys. The big upset? United States of Tara winning Outstanding Main Title Design, beating True Blood.

However you feel about the show, these titles are staggeringly awesome. But awesomer than wanting to do bad things to you?

Tough call. Tara‘s titles also beat out Lie to Me, Storymakers, and Taking Chance, which I couldn’t find video of, and Showtime is becoming a favorite in this category, with both Dexter and Huff picking up awards in years past (though Weeds missed out, losing to the Oscars in 2006).

I dig True Blood‘s moody and strange titles, and think they fit better with the theme and style of the series, but I have to agree with the Academy on this one: Tara‘s credits are fabulous. Are you with me, PopWatchers?

Yes. I love that show. I wonder when it will come back. Do you know?

tara wholeheartedly deserves the award. i’m somewhat biased because i studied a little in motion graphics, so when i saw those opening credits i was just in awe.

yea tara deserved it. I am constantly fast forwarding True Bloods… HBO used to dominate this art form with Six Feet Under and Carnivale being amazing examples of the craft and it looks like Showtime is taking up that mantle…

Is Dexter ineligible now that it’s won before? That and True Blood are obviously 1 and 1-A.

I think True Blood deserved it. Not every title sequence will show you a juxtaposition of religion, sex and rotting death, all against a backdrop of the South. It’s phenomenal and multi-layered, while USofT isn’t.

I’ve never seen Tara, but those are groovy credits, indeed…I don’t watch the True Blood credits cause I don’t like all the dead animals…ha!

Maybe it’s stealth love for the weird Polyphonic Spree theme song.

honestly, i can’t believe this was considered an upset, Tara’s are artistically more complex, and give an interesting perspective on the shows topic, while i get very little about true blood’s subject matter from its credits

“i get very little about true blood’s subject matter from its credits”

Wait, what? The South. Sex. Violence. Bigotry. Death. True Blood’s credits are basically a checklist for the subject matter of the show.

I’d rather watch True Blood’s titles over and over. Tara ‘s is boring.

      Agreed.

    • Carole

I agree. True Blood’s shows the atmosphere of the show.

I like True Blood’s more, however, I appreciate the effort it probably took to make Tara’s.

I never fast forward through True Blood’s the show isn’t right if it doesn’t start off with those images.

True Blood’s titles win out for me and I make motion graphics. Yes, Tara’s titles are very artistic, whereas True Blood’s uses mostly footage, but it’s the combination of ‘Bad Things’ and the visuals that really get me. That shot of the little boy, KKK the next generation!, is very disturbing and the blood bag stuff is great. I never skip True Bloods titles. I love Tara the show though.

Also, what is with the HBO watermark in the YouTube link- it ruins many of the shots and is not in the actual Blu Ray or broadcast titles. Just FYI to those who have only watched them from that link.

Those are groovy credits that Tara has, but after two seasons of True Blood, I am still mesmerized by the credits. They are truly among the most stunning opening credits I’ve ever seen. Even Dexter’s, which are great, get a little tired after a while.
