I’ve been watching the trailer for Disney’s A Christmas Carol throughout the day, trying to figure out how I feel about Jim Carrey as Scrooge. I find the sound of his voice puts me on edge these days (the stress of not finding him as funny as everyone else seems to?), but I’m thinking that might not be a bad thing when he’s playing an unlikable curmudgeon. Plus, I’m a sucker for when loud comedians go soft, which we know will happen at the end of the film. And at least Carrey looks less like Scrooge than Tom Hanks’ eerie resemblance to the Conductor in The Polar Express, also directed by Robert Zemeckis, so perhaps this movie won’t be so unintentionally creepy.
Am I just forcing myself to be nice, or is this film on your holiday to-do list?

Thank you! I also found Polar Express to be so creepy that I couldn’t even watch it!!
Nope, still as creepy as Polar Express. Let’s keep Zemeckis away from animation from now on.
Oh my goodness. Scrooges. What is so creepy about the magic of Christmas!!!
Do we really need another version of “A Christmas Carol”?
I’m with you.
The Muppets already did it best.
Yes! The Muppets version is my favorite!
Bill Murray’s “Scrooged” is pretty hilarious, though.
Yes!!!! This story is a classic and the more times we see it maybe the more charitable people will become.
The Polar Express, creepy?? I must be missing something here…its on my family’s “Must-Watch” list every Christmas since it was released!!
I with you!!!
its the animation – the eyes are just … eerie
It’s the “Uncanny Valley” – 30 Rock did a great spoof about the dead eyes when Tracey Morgan was trying to develop of porn video game. You should read up on it. Totally creepy!
They’re supposed to be – that’s what makes it so fantastic – appreciate how far animation has come – and I’ve been around since Tom & Jerry days,,,I always watch the kids movies cos I think the animation these days is overwhelmingly amazing!
“A Christmas Carol” is the only Dickens work that I like. I’ve seen every film version ever made. While I may or may not go see the movie (not a Jim Carrey fan), I’m looking forward to the train that Disney is using to promote the film. It’s suppose to have some of Dickens’ artifacts on loan from a museum in London.
It looks OK but I wish Zemeckis woud do more live action films. I think he is better suited to them.
Looks pretty good. I think Jim Carrey is an extremely talented actor (I don’t personally care for the over-the-top silliness roles, though), and his take on this classic should be interesting. The animation style is a little unsettling, but it won’t prevent me from watching.
Yep, everyone here’s totally reading my mind! I also could not get through Polar Express, too creepy. And though this film actually looks good, do we need another Jim-Carrey-Times-Ten film? Robert Zemeckis must be stopped.
CREEPY CREEPY CREEPY. I will not see this….I have seen parts of “Polar Express” and it gave me the willies…and if I want to see a versions of “A Christmas Carol” this would not be the one I would want to watch.
The only thing creepy about the “Polar Express” is you guys calling it that. From someone whose been around a lot, lot longer than any of you, I at least know when something is a great Christmas tale/film. Suck it up, will ya?
I’m with you – I loved polar express, and enjoyed the ‘new style’ animation – I even cried in this one,,,I love jim carrey , I think hes a talented and diverse actor!
Bah! RZ was much more interesting as a live action director.
Jim Carrey ruined the Grinch for me (it’s one of my least favorite films of all time), and I was afraid he was going to do the same thing here. But the previews for Carol don’t look too bad.
I thought the Grinch was pretty lousy too, but I think an equal portion of that credit goes to a REALLY bad script and poor direction.
Wow, it is kind of creepy. I’m mostly freaked out by Jim Carrey’s weird British old man voice, though…
Seems to bring the christmas spirit.
I love Jim Carreys voice work, in both animation and live action films. His delivery of the “I’d rather not” and the “humbug” part at the end had me bursting with laughter. And thats all in his delivery.
Didn’t watch the Polar Express, but this one is just better placed between realism and animation. Its not forced and really nonreal realistic like PE seemed to be.
