Joss Whedon on Angel's superiority: 'There's no Edward Cullenus'

Speaking to MTV News before he went inside EW’s Comic-Con party (and danced!), Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon discussed the Twilight phenomenon and who would win in a fight: Angel (David Boreanaz) or Edward (Robert Pattinson). Of course, you’re gonna play the recently-posted video below to hear Whedon’s answer, since he sounds so… Joss, but in case you’re in a rush: Whedon says he thought he’d be laughed out of the room when he created the character of Angel, a vampire with a soul who romances a slayer, but clearly he was wrong. Of the vampire-human love connection, he says, “There’s something really timeless about it. I saw Twilight, I was like [pretends to be breathless] ‘She loves him so much!’ There’s something primal about that story. You can’t get away from it, and it just works like gangbusters. I love it.”

And who would win the fight? “I think Robert Pattinson’s really cool; Angel would kick the s— out of him,” Whedon told MTV News. “Okay, he’s Angelus. There’s no Edward Cullenus, okay. He just gets shiny in the sun…. Boreanaz would have him down in a heartbeat. No offense, ’cause he’s hot.”

We all agree with Joss, yes? Even if Angel didn’t tap into Angelus, he spends every day fighting other vampires and demons, so that experience would counter Edward’s speed.

Paula Abdul: Relive six of her wildest moments!

Filed under: American Idol and tagged: ,

Paula-Abdul-Here-Idol_dlFor the past 48 hours, I’ve subsisted on a steady diet of Honey Bunches of Oats, Diet Dr. Pepper, and news and speculation about Paula Abdul. And while I’m planning an item about Paula’s five best pop songs for our Music Mix blog later this afternoon, I thought it might be fun for now to look back at some of Paula’s wildest, wackiest moments since returning to the spotlight with American Idol in 2002. Check out my six favorites, then head to the comments section and share your own! (And pick up this week’s issue of EW for more on Paula’s exit.) READ FULL STORY »

Bens Lyons and Mankiewicz out 'At the Movies': What do you think of their replacements?

Filed under: Television and tagged: , ,

It can’t come as much of a surprise to anyone that ABC Media Productions is replacing Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz as hosts of At the Movies, the syndicated series originated by Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel. Not after the drubbing the two Bens took in the press ever since they were hired a little over a year ago. I don’t want to kick anybody while he’s down, so I’ll just say that based on my limited viewing of the past season of At the Movies, Lyons and Mankiewicz were indeed no Siskel and Ebert. (Ebert agreed.) Then again, who is?

This week's cover: Why 'District 9' will blow your mind

EW-cover-1060_lThis week’s Entertainment Weekly names District 9, a sci-fi thriller with no big stars and a small budget, the must-see movie of the summer. While those who missed last month’s Comic-Con probably have yet to hear of it, by next week it may be all moviegoers are talking about.

Made for only $30 million by a 29-year-old South African-born director, Neill Blomkamp, the action-packed movie is tinged with a surprising moral intelligence — it’s also an allegory about apartheid — and may become the most unlikely sci-fi blockbuster of the season. Says District 9’s single A-list name, producer Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings), “In an industry that’s looking to make movies out of every obscure TV show, District 9 is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.”

District 9 wasn’t the movie Blomkamp first set out to make with Jackson. In 2006, Jackson and his partner, Fran Walsh, hired Blomkamp to shoot a $145 million big-screen adaptation of the videogame Halo, which ultimately fell apart. When he was hired, Blomkamp’s resume consisted largely of visually stunning ads and sci-fi shorts. “I went from zero to a hundred in a few weeks,” says Blomkamp. “It was insane.”

Which of Peter Jackson's plethora of upcoming projects are you most excited for?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

Dam-Busters_lIt’s hard to believe that the last time we had a big-screen feature from Peter Jackson was his masterful take on the classic King Kong in 2005. Now, thankfully, mercifully, he’s back, this time as producer for what could be this summer’s biggest hit, the alien flick District 9.

So what can we look forward to in the coming months (and years) from Jackson? There’s the trailer for The Lovely Bones now available to watch/weep at on the Internet, and it’s hard not to have a little bias (heck, it’s atop our Must List) towards this winter’s highly anticipated adaptation of Alice Sebold’s cherished novel. However, the afterlife drama, starring Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz, is hardly the only thing on writer/director/producer/Renaissance Man Peter Jackson’s agenda. He’s also teamed up with Steven Spielberg for the animated feature The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (expected to hit U.S. theaters in late 2011), based on the internationally beloved comic strip, featuring the voices of, Daniel Craig and Jamie Bell, among others. There’s also the Jackson-produced remake (possibly in 3-D!) of the 1955 British World War II film The Dam Busters and a little project you may have heard ofcalled The Hobbit (Jackson let us in on the progress of the movies at this year’s Comic-Con).

So, PopWatchers, which of Jackson’s forthcoming features are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the poll below, and don’t forget, for more behind-the-scenes scoop on this summer’s hottest flick, District 9, pick up this week’s EW!

Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are smooth criminals

This is a video that features Zooey Deschanel dancing on a table. If you have not already pressed play, here’s some more info: Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (secretly an Olympic gymnast?) filmed a complement to (500) Days of Summer with this alternate music video for “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” by She & Him (Deschanel’s music project with M. Ward). She’s a bank teller, he’s a robber — they complete a wordless, dreamy gazed cash transaction and turn the bank into their dancefloor. It technically has nothing to do with the movie…aside from the fact that filmmaker Marc Webb directed it and Zooey Deschanel is begging you to watch it. Are you really going to say no to her giant angel eyes?

Update! So You Think You Can Dance judge Mary Murphy has just weighed in. "Do I think they can dance? YES I DO!!!!!"

Quote of the day: 'Speed' (and bonus 'Sixteen Candles') edition

“I got gum on my seat! Gum!” — Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock) in Speed

It’s apparently National Fresh Breath Day, so I really wanted to post the scene from 16 Candles where The Geek and Samantha are sitting in the autoshop car, and he says “fresh breath is a priority of my life.” Alas, embedding was disabled, so I went with the next logical breath-freshening quote about gum. Enjoy minty freshness all day, PopWatchers!

'So You Think You Can Dance': The 15 greatest routines

15. Pasha & Sara’s West Coast Swing
Season 3, Top 14, July 11, 2007

”Oh, jeebus,” we all (or, at least I) thought. ”That camera-mugging doofus from season 2, Benji, is choreographing a West Coast swing number. And poor Pasha and Sara have just started working as partners, too. What kind of hot mess is this gonna be?” Turns out the joke was on us (or just me). The season 2 SYTYCD champion pulled out all his signature moves — the shoe slide, the double cartwheel — but it was Pasha and Sara (i.e., the breaker who was not supposed to be able to do this) that brought the number home, performing as if they’d been swing dancing together for years and keeping the energy dialed to 11 without ever showing us the effort.
