'The Office' opera: Music to my ears

Composer Anne Chmelewsky started writing a musical version of the adventures of David Brent as part of an assignment for a classical composition course, and the opera version of The Office took off from there, gaining the blessings of Steven Merchant and Ricky Gervais and eventually raising around $6,000 for Comic Relief.

Between this and the Harry Potter musical from a few weeks ago, music-oriented adaptations are having quite the run.

What are you adapting for the stage, PopWatchers? I for one am dying for a Wire opera, but I’ll settle for an Ugly Betty musical.

Original cardboard 'South Park' pilot online: Cartman had a dad and a sister!

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

cartman-family_lThe original cardboard South Park pilot that Trey Parker and Matt Stone created for Comedy Central is now viewable online at southparkstudios.com. The episode contains four minutes of footage that never made it into the show’s 1997 series premiere, “Cartman Gets an Anal Probe,” including this shot of Eric’s family (which originally included a dad — who wasn’t his hermaphrodite mom — and a sister!). 'Legion' trailer: Cool or crap with a Paul Bettany cherry on top?

I can see the Hollywood meeting now: ”What would be better than Paul Bettany as the one man who could save a diner full of thugs? Maybe if Paul Bettany was the Archangel Michael, and the thugs all had wings…” Behold this gloriously NSFW trailer for Legion:

Oh, angels…why can’t you just get along and not wage war on everyone with guns and swords and stuff? READ FULL STORY »

Team Brunette is having a brutal summer

jessica-alba-hair-color_lDear brunettes: Stop going blond! It’s scary-looking! Exhibit A: Jessica Alba (pictured).  Exhibit B: Kim Kardashian. Exhibit C: Audrina Patridge. Exhibit D: Kat Von D. In exchange, all we got was Mischa “Crazy Eyes” Barton. Not a fair trade, you guys.

I’m hoping the popularity and awesomeness of (500) Days of Summer will encourage the fair-hared to consider going darker. Zooey Deschanel‘s luxurious locks in that movie were one gigantic ad for the awesome powers of chestnut brown hair.

PopWatchers, who should we try to convert to the dark (haired) side? Or is Team Brunette better off without those bleachy turncoats?

'Family Guy': SPOILER ALERT! Stewie is gay

In the September issue of Playboy, Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane says that Stewie, he of the sexy parties, vaguely British accent and, in one episode, a girlfriend…is a homosexual. The New York Daily News, hilariously, is treating this announcement as major scoop. That is so silly! Everyone knows that YouTube user “JuanFrutos22″ was the one who figured out that Stewie is gay, all the way back in June.*

*Yes. I was kidding.

'America's Next Top Model': Let's judge the Cycle 13 contestants by their photos

next-top-model_lWe’re less than a month away from experiencing Cycle 13 of America’s Next Top Model — the two-hour season premiere is slated for Sept. 9 on The CW — and I’m not entirely certain I’m excited. Last spring, I suggested five ways Tyra Banks’ aging reality competish could freshen its formula, yet this season’s big innovation (all 14 contenders will measure 5’7″ or less) seems more of a headlines-grabbing gimmick than a way to raise the ANTM stakes by making sure the eventual winner has a career that goes beyond six months of ribbon-cutting ceremonies at discount stores nationwide.

Still, DVR habits die hard, which means I’ll at least tune in to the season premiere before I pass judgment on the entire season. And speaking of passing judgment (fun!), initial photos of all 14 contestants are now online at The CW’s ANTM site, which means we can all channel our inner Tyras and emotionally torment some beauties with fragile egos choose our early favorites. Here are my three early picks cracking the final three:

Kara: Every cycle needs a megabeast who’s good at stirring up s*** in the Top Model house, and Kara (left) is serving serious contempt with that facial expression in her initial ANTM shoot. Can gossiping, backstabbing, and screaming tirades be far behind? I sure hope not!

Lisa (center): Look! Girlfriend possesses “wind in her hair,” and we all know from the first 12 cycles of ANTM that you can’t teach that difficult and all-important skill set. (Also, Lisa’s really pretty, and she’s from Queens, just like my good friend Ugly Betty!)

Jennifer (right): Has already mastered the art of smiling with her eyes, and seeing how she’s 23 years of age, she could fill that vital role of the contestant who gives the judges a chance to play that timeless game of coming up with euphemisms for “too old for the modeling business.”

Check out the 14 contestant photos on The CW’s site, then head to the message boards below and name your three early faves!

Sand-imation: The Coolest Thing You'll See All Day

Stumbled across this on the Leverage showrunner’s blog, and it’s beautiful. Not only is it beautiful, I never in a million years would’ve thought of doing this. Which is why she’s an artist and I’m…well, I’m a dude sitting in my bathrobe.

Tonight's 'Big Brother' will be taped: Thanks to 'batcrap crazy' Chima?

Filed under: Mini TV Watch and tagged:

Instead of its usual live airing, tonight’s Big Brother offering will be a taped episode in anticipation of a possibly volatile eviction ceremony. CBS has yet to respond to requests from EW for comment, but the belief is Chima, the hotheaded houseguest who’s serving as this week’s head of household, could throw a fit if fellow HG Jeff uses his “wizard power,” aka the secret coup d’etat power that America granted him last week. All this may sound like Sanskrit to you non-BB fans so here’s a quick explanation: The coup d’etat will allow Jeff to overturn Chima’s eviction nominations (in this case, Lydia and Russell) and pick new nominees should he choose to exercise it today, thus making for a pretty dramatic episode. But Chima, who fans have already seen go off on Russell, could turn her threats into reality (she has apparently said she’ll go “batcrap crazy”) and turn the ceremony into a train wreck — thus the Web chatter about the reason behind taping the show early.

What do you think? Should BB take Chima’s threat seriously? Will this ruin a possibly craptastic episode?

NBC's 'Community': The next '30 Rock'?

Filed under: Community, Television and tagged: , ,

NBC has posted a bunch of new clips of its new comedy Community (premiering Sept. 17), starring Joel McHale, Chevy Chase, and that guy who is in every funny movie you’ve seen over the past three years (aka Ken Jeong). The show follows a group of misfits, including a dis-barred lawyer (McHale) and a dippy retiree (Chase) who end up as classmates at a community college.

Judging by these teasers (and the full pilot, posted on Facebook) it’s got the same self-aware, whip-smart vibe that turned 30 Rock into an Emmy magnet—not to mention one of my favorite shows ever. Take a look at this clip below of Señor Chang (Jeong) teaching a Spanish class, and then let us know: Is Community going to be the comedy to beat this fall?
